Review by J. Lockhart from Anthropological Linguistics, 1996
"The Nahuatl expression "chipping away on earth" refers to the way long-sustained activity can develop skills and achieve great things. It makes an appropriate title for a volume commemorating the translators of the Nahuatl texts of fray Bernardino de Sahagún's sixteenth-century Florentine Codex or General History of the Things of New Spain. Anderson and Dibble's multi-volume publication is the largest philological undertaking seen in the realm of indigenous languages of the New World in modern times, and upward of three decades passed between its first inception and its completion. When these two anthropologists began their entreprise in the late 1940s, they met with little understanding or encouragement from fellow practitioners of their discipline. Ethnohistory barely existed, and indeed it could not flourish until some of the basic texts necessary for its practice were available and understood. In the decades that have followed, New World ethnohistory has gained great momentum, partly as a result of Anderson and Dibble's efforts, and their philology has drawn the admiring attention also of historians literary scholars, and art historians. Among this large audience, their feats are legendary.

The volume comprises twenty-seven pieces (plus two introductory essays), by as many authors, divided into five sections. In the first, Anderson, Dibble, and Norma Mikkelson, who was closely involved at University of Utha Press, reminisce on various stages of the Florentine Codex project. The following sections are devoted to: aspects of the work of Sahagún; Mesoamerican philology beyond Sahagún; various substantive aspects of Nahua cultural history before and after the conquest; and some facets of the history of the Nahua subregion of Tetzcoco....

....A collection of this type, when it is as well done as the present one, and represents as good a cross-section of authors as this one does, can serve as an introduction to the field for the nonspecialist, or even as a way of keeping current for the specialized scholar. It also represents an opportunity to discuss the field's evolution...."

An eyewitness account: good stuff
General Bond kept a diary during his year with the American Volunteer Group. Unfortunately, it was slightly edited for publication, so we don't in all cases get his unvarnished view. Still, it's by far the best account currently in print from the point of view of one of the original Flying Tiger pilots. There's some historical context provided by historian Terry Anderson.

Lavish photos of fabulous wildlife with good detail
I wanted a book that would stimulate my children's interest in marine life. They are into elephants and lions in a big way but there's more to life! I think this book will do nicely. Smaller than I was expecting - that just makes it easier to handle for the kids. Each page has a stunning photograph of an even more stunning creature/plant. Below the picture, there is a block of text with just enough detail. I guess a bright 12 year-old could understand it.

Fresh air for the X-Files
This book fits in the "spirit world" kind of episodes from the X-files. I like it when i read it, and it has some additional aspects about the relationships between Mulder and Scully that i never seen in the series, but are according to the characters. If you are a X-Fan, you will like to read this book. But you will not find any alien!

Wrox keeps getting worse.
I was hoping this would be the sequel to the awesome beginners asp database book by John Kauffman. It was not even close. This book trys to cover so many platforms that it ends up not covering anything very well. The examples are terrible and confusion will set in after the second chapter. I have found that with Wrox books, if there is more than one person on the cover, then it will stink up the place.

Not bad for a Database programmer
My favorites were Section 5,7 and 8. The case studies were okay. Good cover on MTS and Novell Directory Services with ASP.

ASP Data
As a reviewer for this book I have read the book from cover to cover. The strong point about this book is that it covers many different aspects of data access. If you are somewhat new to ASP this book will show the ropes on ADO, XML and how to mix data from many different sources. If you are an experienced developer this book covers many areas that will interest you - data warehousing, the use of several different DB other than the very familiar SQL Server and non-realtional data sources. I have taken my copy of this book to work and everyone wants to borrow it.

Doesn't deliver on what it promises
Decades ago sci-fi grandmaster Isaac Asimov noted the similarity between detective stories (whodunit?) and science fiction "puzzle" stories (how do you solve the problem?). Avoiding some of the obvious pitfalls, he began to write stories that contain elements of both of these popular genres. But of the various stories in this collection, only Larry Niven's "ARM" really lives up to the title, combining the imagination of science fiction with the action and drama of a detective story. Asimov's "The Singing Bell" comes close, and shows off the master's skill with "puzzle" stories, but the armchair detective doesn't really lend itself to exciting reading and would be a serious disappointment to fans who expect some action. As for the rest, only Poul Anderson's "The Martian Crown Jewels" and "Time Exposures" by Wilson Tucker are bona fide sci-fi detective stories, and both are eminently forgettable. Donald Westlake's "The Winner", Robert Silverberg's "Getting Across", and Philip K. Dick's "War Games" are all very good science fiction stories, indeed are the highlights of the collection, but there are no detectives in them. Perhaps the most memorable sci-fi detective is Philip Jose Farmer's Herr Ralph Von Wau Wau, the intelligent canine of "A Scarletin Study", a humorous send up of the whole cross-genre concept. In sum, while perhaps the blame lies more with the form than with the editing, this book fails to deliver what it promises; the overall collection isn't that strong as "just" science fiction, and the advertised combination of sci-fi and private detective fiction never really coalesces. Readers interested in this idea would do better to pick up one of Asimov's many fine collections.

PRIVATE EYE REVIEW
I thought the book was very good describing the plot, storyline, and characters. However, the book was pretty easy to predict. It's whole storyline was old and boring. The absence of twists and any new developments killed any suspense. Overall the story gets a 3 out of 5.
