This is a great pioneer book. It is about a fictionist family-the Carpenters-who travels from Pennsylvania to Illinois in the mid 1800s. They encounter death, low water, marriage, and a wonderful feast. I would recommend this book for anybody interested in pioneers. This is a great tie-in book for a history unit, but also great for pleasure reading.

Utilizing first person from her daughter's point of view, the author demonstrates through writing and photojournalism coverage the special relationship a blind person has with their dog guide and how that unique bond develops. I am an adult volunteer guide dog puppy raiser for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., in San Rafael, and I use this book to read to school age children to explain what my pups will do when they return to guide dog school and are later matched with their blind handler. The book is written from the perspective of a young girl about 12 years old, the children in the audience immediately identify with her worry about her blind mother. The book shows the difficulty of going places for a blind person and how a dog allows them more independence and safety as they travel on their own. The black and white photographs are excellent and illustrate the everyday life of a family with one member who cannot see. I hope this book is reprinted soon, I would love to own my own copy to take to schools, not borrow the school library's.

This is a FABULOUS book for preparing a classroom for what they will see, hear, and do at a Native American Powwow. This book is an excellent teachers' resource as well as picture book for elementary-age children that have not experienced the culture and diversity of Native Americans. The author highlights a young Native American boy as he leads you through a powwow, focusing on the dances and regalia worn by Native Americans who demonstrate some of their traditional ceremonial activities.

This book explains the celebration "Dia de Muertos" through a story about a boy named, Pablo. The book has many pictures and is an accurate description of Day of the Dead in Mexico. Pablo is honoring his grandmother who died recently. The book shows all the traditional food, the celebration and the meaning behind it all.

Pablo Remembers is a beautiful book that explains what the celebration of Day of the Dead is all about. The photos are excellent and even though it is a children's book, I share it with high school students and adults who are unfamiliar with this custom. I think that it describes the preparations and symbolism used in this celebration very well.

The book is about two teenage ballet dancers. The photos are beautiful, and it gives you an inside look behind the effortless movements and glamourous costume. This book is specifically pointed towards younger readers. It's short but the photos and information are quite good. But I wouldn't recommend this book to advanced readers because they will be disappointed by the shortness of the book.

Twins On Toes is a story about how two teenage girls strive with dedication to complete their deam. This book gives a good picture in peoples minds about what serious and dedicated ballerinas devote to as a ballerina. Most people do not understand how hard it is to be a ballerina, specially to be in top-notch dance schools like them. It is something you have to start young and something you have to keep at for you too be a successful serious dancer. I read this book and it reminded me of how I feel about classes and the type of instuction. Even though I'm not old enough to be thinking about joining companies but it certainly sounds like what's ahead of me.

This is the coolest book ever! I used to read it a million times a day when I was younger and I absolutely loved all the pictures in it! This is the best book on ballet that I have ever read.

Our language delayed 3 year old loves the handtalk series. In this birthday story with a magical touch, the photos tell the story (there is text) and the characters sign along with the action portrayed. It's easiest to sign if you already know the signs as the photos don't always capture the exact motions.

Handtalk School by Mary Beth Miller and George Ancona, takes the reader on a fun and informative tour of a day in the life of children at a residential school for the deaf. From the moment the students wake up in the morning they are caught up in the excitement of preparing for the school play. From creating the props and costumes in art class, to learning their lines in history, to calling home on a TTY, the day circles around the preparation and the performance of the Thanksgiving day show.
Handtalk School is full of colorful photographs and a narration provided in sign language. In addition to being a fun story, the book also provides the nonsigning reader with some beginning signs and an insight into Deaf culture. ASL users will notice that despite the books claim of being in ASL, the story is actually told in a hybrid of ASL and Signed English. Despite this, the signs are easy to follow and the book can be enjoyed even by those with little to no English reading ability. Parents of deaf children may also appreciate the list of residential schools for the deaf listed in the back of the book.

George Ancona's I Feel beautifully captures a variety of children's emotions through candid black and white photographs. I have found it to be a valuable resource for encouraging young children to explore feelings through discussion, acting, storytelling and creating poetry in my work as a poet-in-the-schools.

This book was poorly written. It talks about a couple of set of twins. It tells all about the kinds of twins and how it is very unusual to have twins. Although this book is all thhese things it was in black and white. They talk very scientifically. This book again was poorly written.
