This book is perfect for beginners and those that already now the basics and want to advance further. It has many examples and is written in a intelligent manor. If you are advanced in VRML you may still benefit from this book however when it comes to scripting and adding Java to your 3d worlds you will need to invest in other books.

Doesn't take you through the subject in the conventional manner. After the first couple of intro chapters, you can then easily delve into any other chapter for what you need. Very useful as a reference once you understand the basics. A bit weak on using scripts to control and interact with VRML worlds. Other than this minor gripe, a great book.

John Edward Ames is an expert at using the New Orleans environment and the local Louisiana weather to add suspense to an already tense story. The "Asylum" takes off like a bullet out of the barrel of a saturday night special. And the character of Reno Sloan, a lawyer turned detective, fits the scenery like it was molded for him. The "Asylum" is a fine gumbo of hardboiled horror. I recommend it as a fast read.

Democracy of the Dead: Dewey, Confucius, and the Hope for Democracy in China is an impressive attempt at dialogue between Confucianism and American Pragmatism on the subject of fostering democratic reforms in China. It is both a history of philosophy text, highlighting Dewey's thought and subsequent Pragmatist scholars, liberalism, and Confucianism, and a polemic about the limitations of liberal thought in China. Although some acquaintance with the texts interpreted by the authors is recommended, the authors' synopses are trustworthy and ably and judiciously given. There are also generous quotes and and a and a nine-page bibliography provided.

Admittedly, I was skeptical about the authors' project, which seemed like a desperate attempt to bridge two subjects, pragmatism and Confucianism, that are both equally unprofitable, with a popular item in the news, China. I wanted an appealing interpretation of Confucianism, that would allow me to understand the cultural divide between east and west more easily. I was also interested in any study about pragmatism, which, as the authors also argue, deserves more respect. Last, I wanted a framework to understand Korean and western dialogue, since Korean interpretations of Confucianism are also relevant to Chinese reform historically, and are also a factor in Korea's relations with western countries. The book satisfied my demands more than satisfactorily.

Some readers may be angered by the authors' use of Deweyan Pragmatism to criticize traditional liberalism, but the authors have good reason. Dewey did have a small role in Chinese educational reform before the Communist Party assumed control in 1949. Dewey, and pragmatism in general, are both better exemplars of distinct American realities than liberalism. Also, using pragmatic terms, the authors couch Confucian concepts in a way more palatable and approachable.

The authors argue, that a Confucian interpretation of democracy is possible. This Confucian democracy is useful as a tool for political reform. And then, by using Deweyan thought, it is possible for Chinese and American reformers to share ideas for reform in both countries. The book, therefore, is ultimately a practical one.

The authors eschew nationalistic and philosophical bias, which is necessary for productive dialogue. This is not a book that celebrates western values over eastern ones. It has relevance also in Korea, yet, ironically, it will not convince Americans of the need for reform in their own country, especially if readers refuse to abandon implicit faith in liberal thinking. This is not a book about dead things, but a very lively, well-written, timely offering..

This book is truly a collection of treasures. Some of the most interesting people, including musicians, artists, craftspeople, magicians and just plain caring folks can be found in the Texas Hill Country and this book is a great introduction to these people. The Texas Hill Country also has wonderful parks and natural areas, zoos, museums, churches with breathtaking views, chili cooksoffs market days and even a real castle. Mr. Kimball and all the contributing writers show a great interest and love for these places and reading about them makes you wish you were there. I especially like the updates at the end of the features, it gives you a feel of where this person was and where they are now and eliminates the questions often asked, "I wonder what they're doing now?". I highly recommend this book if you are even thinking about heading for the Texas Hill Country.

William Ames' "Marrow" is one of the two or three books sure to have been found on every pilgrims bookshelf beside the Geneva Bible, a Bay Psalm book and perhaps a few others (Maybe Wigglesworth's "Day of Doom")was Ames works, and to be sure it's special place was deserved. Ames wrote the Marrow in order to take all the confusing arguments of systematic theology and boil them down to the essence, so his readers would have the BARE BONES of the point at issue. This he did magnificently! This edition has a full biography of Ames and a good writeup that gives the feel for the times and debates surround the work. A masterpiece!

What many of us are now doing on our computers for our art work, Jerry Uelsmann, a professor and photographer in Florida did first in the darkroom. "Process and Perception," by John Ames and Jerry N. Uelsmann shows page by page the surreal imagery of things that don't go together in the real world but are hauntingly combined in Uelsmann's photographs. He wisely stayed with black and white in all of the images because he evokes the dream world or the world evoked by the photographic negative. Color would have competed with his imagery too much. You see a woman's body floating above the water or combined with the roots of a tree or water running backwards as a person emerges from the sea, to name just a few of his works. These are all fantastic combinations and he must have spent grueling hours in the darkroom achieving these photographs. I think any artist or photographer will be inspired by his work.

The premise of this book, the unwritten order, is so intriguing I wondered how John Edward Ames would pull this off. Sudden death at the start of this novel grabs the reader and pull you through the long trail of redemtion. This is one of the finest westerns I have ever read (and I've read a lot - I'm a professional writer). Mr. Ames has painted a vast canvass with memorable characters and gripping situations. This is one fine novel.

Unlike the other LRRP books out there this one is organized topically. It starts off kind of slow but if you can get into it, it really gets good. Unlike the Recon Marines who purposely engaged in firefights with the NVA and VC the airborne LRRPs were mostly used for scouting and tended to withdraw (or try to) when in close proximity to the enemy. The accounts of the ambushes in the second half of the book are very tense. Sgt. Burford's return to CONUS at the end of his tour to an unappreciative nation and a bunch of peaceniks is pretty sad.

I picked it up on a lark but wound up immensely enjoying it. It is definitely a very personal account of Burford's time and tour of duty in Vietnam with 101st LRRPs. It is written in a very interpersonal way that I find makes it different than many other books I have read. If you enjoy light reading about an important subject, I HIGHLY recommend this book to you.

John Burford wrote this book in a unique and interesting way by telling the story to his family while sitting around the kitchen table. My hat's off to him for a well-told story. It's a must-read for anyone who wants to know the full truth about that fateful patrol of 20 Nov 68. John does not embellish, modify, or exaggerate the facts. From his own research and investigation immediately after the patrol members returned to base, and his own combat experience in that unit, and his own knowledge regarding artillery and claymores, he came to his own conclusions about what actually happened on that patrol. He has put forth an account that differs from the other books written about that mission. It took courage for him to do that. Death and injury in a combat environment are horrific experiences, no matter what the circumstances. History appreciates the truth, painful though it may be.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to make their organization more efficient through the reduction and elimination of paper.

I enjoy the fact that famous speeches I have only heard a few lines to are now provided for me in full. Given the number of famous speeches, I believe Suriano has done an excellent job in his selection.
