love Pamela Allen books
My 3yo daughter loves the Pamela Allen books and this one is typical of the ones that appeal to younger readers with great illustrations, a rollicking pace and lots of funny sound effects. They sometimes read this book on one of the popular kids TV shows here in Australia so it is quite widely known here.

Learn all about Sounds!
The bear is running after Bertie and the rest of the people in the castle are trying to scare the bear away by making a lot of noise!

The Admiral with his gong, the Captain with a horn, the General with a flute and many others teach children the different kinds of sounds that are produced with different sources.

Great illustrations accompany the story and the story ends funnily and happily.

Wonderful book for kids and educators.

Do It Yourself Vegtable Garden
In the true tradition of do it yourself books created by Ortho this has to be its best. The book is geared for both beginners in gardening and the handy do it yourselfer types. Chapters progress you through the steps from site selection and plant selection to harvesting, crop rotating and soil conditioning over winter and indoor greenhouse seed starting. Its an A-Z book and should be the the only reference book (excluding seed catalogs) you really need. The book also contains references to various cultivars within vegtable species and handy suggested cooking guides, so a beginner gardener could not only successfully select and grow well know vegtables, but could also grow and use the odd often hard to find fresh herbs.

Great for cooks too
Beautifully illistrated the book starts with a complete garden guide that includes specifics on everything from choosing a garden site to the correct amount of light and water. Also covered in this section is data concerning soil, seasons, weeds, pests and problems. It then continues with a very comprehensive catalog of vegetables and herbs, each one containing precise straightforward details on planting, harvesting and cooking along with recipes and nutritional facts. Even if you're not interested in growing a garden, every cook should have this book. I use it as a resource when I am trying to choose the correct type of vegetable according to my recipe and taste buds or when looking up unfamiliar herbs that certain recipes may call for. A wealth of information, I use it to quickly and easly find answers to all my questions.

First-Rate Introduction To E-Health
This is a great resource. I have taught a class in computers in health care for undergraduates seeking degrees in health care administration since 1985; I've spent an increasing amount of time on telemedicine and e-health topics.

The authors have done a great job in pulling together all of the facts and concepts needed to effectively teach this subject. Detailed chapters on technologies, applications, and how to get started provide an excellent foundation. Chapters on challenges to maintaining confidentiality of patient information, malpractice pitfalls and ethical concerns with e-health are perfect for teachers and are essential reading to all professionals who are involved in the provision of these services. Final chapters emphasizing the evaluation of programs using these emerging (and imperfect) technologies temper the "let's do it because we can" spirit of telemedicine enthusiasts with the "let's make sure it works in the real world" concerns of administrators.

I'm particularly pleased with the effort made in every chapter to put a human face on the technologies involved. Much better than dry feature lists, these real-world examples will help my students (some of whom are health care practitioners returning for another degree) really understand what e-health will mean to us all.

If you are looking for the best book available on this topic, look no further.

A PATCH ON THE EYE AND A PARROT ON THE SHOULDER
.

What a shame this book is out of print. It's one of Pamela Allen's best, rivalling "Who Sank the Boat" and the Mr McGee series for fun and entertainment value.

Most children like to dream of being pirates. The patch on the eye and the parrot on the shoulder are all part of the game.

The hero of our story has an older brother called Peter who's got a pirate suit. Of course Peter has all the fun, gets all the treasure and makes our little friend walk the plank when in a sea of crocodiles.

When the boys grow up a little our friend inherits the pirate suit. However he doesn't get to experience the pleasures of being a pirate since Peter is now a lion tamer. Now, guess who is the lion? It looks like young brother is about to get his revenge.

Lobby the publisher to get this fun book back in print.

a great one for young lion lovers
My 3yo daughter loves this book and can almost recite it off by heart. It has a great rollicking pace and really, detailed funny illustrations. We also like the way the illustrations curl around the page. I am sorry to hear that these books are out of print in the US. They are essential reading for children in Australia and very universally appealing, I would think.

Eureka!
By the author of 'Who Sank The Boat?' This is a fun way of learning about Archimedes Principle. He hops in and out of a bath with, variously a kangaroo, goat and wombat, examining the water level each time, and trying to understand why when ALL the friends are in the bath it always overflows.

Well illustrated. And, yes, he shouts "EUREKA!"

For all dog-lovers
I love this little picture book ("photographic guide"). I had ordered it with trepidation, not being educated in shiatsu or any other oriental healing art. I thought it might prove to be well beyond my understanding and ability. But, in fact, it could not be easier. The techniques are simple, the explanations clear, and the abundant photographs leave no doubt as to exactly where and how each treatment is done. If nothing else comes from it, my two old, arthritic doggies are greatly enjoying their massages-- any long-term results will just be icing on the cake. I highly recommend this booklet.

Sinking Science
This book is great for getting kids to think about what makes things float or sink, as well as how things balance. The surprise ending is a lot of fun, although getting kids to understand why it happens usually involves going back through the whole series of pictures. This could be a good early science book or just a good read!

ONE MOUSE TOO MANY
.

This book has the simplest of plots but it is very charmingly told.

Imagine a pig carrying an umbrella, a sheep doing knitting, and a cow and a donkey and a mouse, all walking along on their back legs in single file.

What else is there to do on a fine sunny morning but to go for a row in the boat?

But there is one big question. "Who sank the boat?"

We are told the outcome right up front, but who was the culprit? The tension and suspense is fantastic as each creature in turn gets aboard. The donkey is a smart critter since he knew how to balance the weight of the cow. The sheep was just as smart since he got on the opposite side to the pig. We are now very low in the water now, but still afloat.

The smallest and the lightest of the friends now gets on board. Glug, glug, glug - Time to swim. "You DO know who sank the boat" - don't you?

This is a classic children's story, beautifully illustrated.

For the thoughtful child it is a good introduction to some interesting physical phenomena. The straw that broke the camel's back is an overworked (and unpleasant) metaphor. Our mouse friend is a good analogy to that one snowflake that triggered the avalanche.

Everyone did!
Lovely illustrations, and a good text, which has some good rhymes. A reading aloud book, definitely, as some of the words are hard for beginning readers, while the story-line is suitable for younger readers. As for science, it is worthwhile building up the picture that everyone sitting in the boat contributes to its sinking. Eventually, the cry goes up that "Everyone did!" in reponse to the question "Who sank the boat?"

Pamela Allen also wrote "Mr Archimedes Bath" which is a terrific exploration of water displacement.

Lovely noisy book for toddlers about hen hatching her eggs
This book is a joy to read to toddlers. It is as noisy as you want it to be. Bright illustrations and lots of 'tuk tuk tuk' sounds as the hen waits for her eggs to hatch. A classic book from a New Zealand author.

Great Resource for Keeping Elders Healthy
This comprehensive manual provides all the detail any clinician would need to focus on geriatric rehabilitation. There are 7 units, dealing with general physiological health, psychological health and a new paradigm that focuses on concepts of wholeness and uniqueness vs. the traditional medical model. Pathokinesiology is addressed along with therapeutic interventions. Sensory losses are addressed also, a great book for the novice gerontologist or one with experience to have information at one's fingertips.
