Little-Known History, Poetic Text, Lovely Illustrations
This short history of trees in the Holy Land melds fact with poetic language and magnificent art. Unfortunately cataloged by the Library of Congress as fiction, this book presents an accurate description of the natural history of the small slice of land called Israel over a 7,000 year period. The language is simple enough for a child to understand, yet contains little-known history, deep truths, and complex concepts.

The sensitive illustrations have a magical quality, managing to show the historical realities of each period within the context of trees. The illustrator's use of color is outstanding, with color fading as the land is denuded, then rebuilding to lush blues and greens as new forests darken the hillsides.

This book would make a wonderful gift for any child, and for any adult interested in either the environment or the Holy Land.

A Feast For The Eyes
If one only looks at the pictures on this book, one has "read" it. Of course, the text just highlights the illustrations. Every child - and every adult- should have this book to read and absorb on a regular basis. It stimulates the imagination in every way. Something beautiful to behold.

The absurdity of wars by the example of WW I
Compiled out of quotations, newspaper articles, different folk songs and own experiences with Austria-Hungary and Germany through World War One Karl Kraus wrote this book to show the people of the time after the War their own absurd behavement. The book is written as a Drama, but without a continuous story it shows the war with examples of Journalists, Politics, Aristocrats, Workers, Soldiers. It is an important forefather of Brecht's epic drama. To understand the different quotations you should know a bit about the Austrian and German history and the Emperors of the time.

Brilliant satire from a modern Cassandra
Karl Kraus is still well known in Germany, and deserves to be better known here. THE LAST DAYS OF MANKIND, 'a play to be performed on Mars' is one of the most trenchant satires written this century. Kraus compiled the play from newspaper articles, official bulletins, and overheard conversations during World War One in Vienna. He actually performed excerpts from this damning indictment of the human race during the war. I wish that someone would translate all of this book from the German; one flaw of this edition is the note early on which states that 'since modern Americans are not familiar with minutiae of the life of the Emperor Franz Joseph, these chapters have been cut.' With all due respect, if we did not know something about the later Habsburgs we would not be reading THE LAST DAYS OF MANKIND in the first place. The lowest pit in Kraus' hell is reserved for those vultures who treated wartime reporting as popular entertainment--which makes him an uncomfortably modern writer. Please, please beg borrow or steal a copy of this book and try to get it reprinted in a full translation!

This amusing book should be Famous
World Famous Muriel is one of those rare finds. Quirky fun and a real plot that keeps the kids guessing just who might have stolen the Queen's lanterns is only part of the fun. Children ask for this book over and over, enjoying the bravado of Muriel, her willingness to speak up for herself, and her independence. They also love following the clues amid chuckles, and then the explanation by Muriel of how she solved 'the mystery'. Buy this book and enjoy reading it aloud to your children or class as much as they enjoy listening.

Pathetic
I can't say the word demagogue enough...an absolutely awful book that reads more like a political manifesto than a non-fiction work. I use the term non-fiction loosly.

Haunting Pictures
Some of the pictures in this book will stay with you for a long time, some may even make meat-eaters turn vegetarian. But, even more so than the pictures, the description of the horror of factory farms - to the animals and the workers - will disgust anyone with a heart.
I reccommend this book to longtime vegetarians, new vegetarians, and also to people who are just interested in maybe trying vegetarianism.

Animal lovers unite.
If you are passionate about animals, you must read this book. The drawings alone tell the story. The introduction is very educational and will enlighten you. This book is very informative in the body and the drawings and a must read for anyone. It explains the horror that goes on in the slaughterhouses and even gives you a tour through them. I learned more from this book than any other in my personal library on this subject.

Randy Miller Jr. Nadia The Willful
This story is about a girl and her dead bother. She talked about her brother and it eases the pain. She lived in a tribe. Her tribe lived in the desert. They owned a bunch of sheep.

A great adventure story
Nadia the Willful was a great story. The setting of the story was in the Middle East many years ago. The main characters were Madia, Sheik and Tari. My favorite character was Nadia because she always helped people. I would recommend this book to people ten to thirteen years old.
