Six Centuries of Great Poetry

Great Poetry at a Great Price
This is an excellent collection of British poetry, and all for the price of a paperback novel. A relatively large selection of poets are represented, focusing mostly on the Elizabethan poets up to the nineteenth century, wisely leaving most of the modern stuff out. Not only are the classic poets like Shakespeare, Herrick, Milton, and Wordsworth present, but also some of the more often overlooked poets such as Emily Bronte, Henry King, and Sir Walter Raleigh. If you are a lover of poetry you probably already own a larger collection of poetry and don't need a relatively small volume like this one. If, however, you are only just discovering the beauty of poetry, this is a worthwhile purchase. "Immortal Poems of the English Language" is also excellent for new poetry lovers. I just wish more people loved this beautiful and uniquely human form of emotional expression.

A stromng introduction to "classic" poetry
This book should be in the collection of every person that desires to write poetry. Study it from cover-to-cover before beginning your own writing. I especially like the way it is arranged "historically" - chronologically - so you can more easily understand the changes that occurred during the English history of poetry.

A Bargain
You'll find all of these poems elsewhere... in thick, expensive volumes. You know who to expect here, and, depending on your knowledge of poetry, might be, as I was, pleasantly surprised and introduced to unfamiliar poets. Buy this book because you can. Read it because the poems are great.

One stop shopping for all your British poetry needs? Not quite. While that fellow Anonymous gets a few selections, as does his various collegagues and peers, consider this a sampler. A few selections from everyone. Yes, yes.. a 589 page sampler. That's the beauty of it.

I'm a Hopkins fans, and was pleased to see his best pieces. I expected those. New to me were Marston, Oldys, Googe, and a myriad of others. Now I am intrigued to read more of their work.

Portable, and easy to stuff in a coat or briefcase, you'll like the friendly size of the book. The poets are indexed by last name, but organized by chronology in the text itself. The typography is readable (not that teeny tiny stuff some publishers think is good for anthologies).

What more could you want?

I fully recommend this book.

Informative, a good read.
An interesting, informative book, full of historic details and colourful pictures. From court shoes of Henry VIII's time to Vivienne Westwood's famous 12-inch platform shoe of the 90s, this book is full of description and history of the item we cannot live without. Features the shoes exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Reading the book is almost as good as going there to see the shoes yourself.

Fascinating and Informative
I have always been interested in costume design and role playing. Footwear is an area that seems to be the most neglected when attempting to re-create a costume from a past era. For those who strive for accuracy in putting together the perfect historical outfit, or even if you just have an interest in shoes in general, this book fits the bill. Wonderful, colorful photos, a highly readable text detailing the history of the crazy world of footwear--the book covers everything involved with shoes and answers most questions the reader may have. From the grotesque to the mundane, we are presented with styles that run the gamut from shoes of leather and iron (ouch!) to platform soles of 12 inches or more. What is surprising is that some styles are still with us today, modernized but still very recognizable. We also learn the painful lengths that people will go for the sake of fashion. Time has changed nothing in this regard, as we still wobble around on stilleto heels and end up with bunions, corns or worse--but we still look marvelous, darling!!! Seriously, if you love to learn about footwear, like to dress in period attire, or are simply a "shoe freak", don't hesitate to buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

The Gettysburg Campaign: June-July 1863 (Great C Ampaigns)
Published in Hardcover by DaCapo Press (April, 1993)
Author: Albert A. Nofi
Amazon base price: $19.95

a valuable, easy to read introduction to Gettysburg
This book is a very good introduction to those who want to learn a little about the battle of gettysburg. Written in an easy to read style,it covers just enough detail to whet your appetite for more, or give you confidence to talk a little on the subject: there are 20 or so short digressions intersersed throughout the text which provide a little more biographical detail on key participants, or information about notable incidents. Recommended .

A must for any Civil War buff
A wholly satisfying and occasionally inspired account of one of the pivotal events in American history. Veteran military historian Al Nofi constructs a clear, thoughtful narrative of the entire campaign (concentrating, of course, on the three days of the battle itself). Solidly researched, and the orders of battle are noteworthy for their detail. Also of especial interest are the modules interspersed throughout the book, dealing with individual figures and interesting sidelights (including a speculation on what the battlefield must have smelled like after three days of carnage and camping out!). Nofi's assessments of individual commanders are almost always judicious, although he's rather more charitable to Dan Sickles than most historians. All in all, this is an essential addition to any Civil War historian's bookshelf.

A terrific little book
Want to learn what took place at Gettysburg? Get your hands on this little gem, you won't be dissapointed. Well researched and put together, it contains several footnotes detailing the battle, the Generals, and the soldiers. A must read

Uncrowned King: The Life of Prince Albert

Just absolutely stunning!
After seeing the A&E production of "Victoria and Albert," I was curious to know more about the lives of the said characters (I'm also a history major so that helps, too). I was browsing through my university's library to find this book on Prince Albert and I read it. I just finished reading it today and wow, this is a stellar book. It's so comprehensive that my mind almost exploded while reading it. There were some minor details that could've been left out, hence the four star rating. I plan to read more about Victoria and Albert in the future. So take my advice. Treat yourself to this wonderful book and put it in your personal library. I'll be sure to buy this book when I have the chance.

Good covering of a neglected life.
I questioned myself before i picked up this book in the library; brought up as a good Englishman, i already knew all i wanted or needed about the Prince Consort, and was unimpressed with it, nor did i care to learn any more. Now i see i was quite correct in my questioning, and i'm afraid i may have to change my long-held, and therefore cherished, beliefs about him. Darn intellectual honesty, anyway! Weintraub's Albert was a responsible, educated, thinking man, thrust into a situation both wonderful and intolerable (his marriage and lack of acceptance in England, respectively). Weintraub shows him as having enjoyed the one side and, through hard work and dedication, partially overcome the other. One is left to wonder, as Weintraub indeed does, what would the monarchy be today had Albert lived as long as Victoria. Surely there would be some differences. On the basis of this book, it is not fair to say (as a previous reviewer did) that Albert laid the foundation for the pax Britannica; he did, however, through his fecundity, insight into both politics and industry, and though a great deal of hard work, aid the shaping of Europe through the First World War. As i look back now, it is hard for me exactly to define just why i have disliked His Royal Highness; i suspect it has to do with his rather poor treatment of his eldest son, the Prince of Wales, which Weintraub does not gloss over, but implies was deserved; also the wreck Victoria made of her life after he died, which really can't be laid at his door; also, though i am probably of the last generation to instinctively feel nothng good can come from Germany, the man was a German (though not a Prussion, at least). Two hundred plus years of racial dislike are hard to overcome. I would not say that i have yet overcome them; Weintraub has helped me see with a clearer vision, though.

A Prince Consort, who really should have been king.
At a time when marriages of royals were political matches, and not romantic ones, this is a story of an insignificant German prince who is married to the very young, Queen of England. Victoria and Albert actually fall in love with each other. Unfortunately, physicians at the time did not know when human females ovulated, which resulted in the many children of Victoria and Albert. However, her numerous pregnancies allowed Albert to become a more integral part in the monarchy. He became King in all but name as Victoria retired to the "sidelines." His diligent, untiring work set the stage for the great Victorian Era and the Pax Britannia.

Albert Einstein: Physicist and Genius (Great Minds of Science)
Published in Paperback by Enslow Publishers, Inc. (January, 2001)
Author: Joyce Goldenstern
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

an instructor and scientist from South Dakota
Although Einstein's basic life history and his theoretical concepts are reviewed moderately well for a child of about twelve, we found the book difficult to read due to the short and very choppy sentence structure. This writing style was very distracting to us as we tried to read this aloud to our children. Parent added dynamics and humor helped retain interest. Photos were only moderately relavent and the illustrations were actually mediocre quality black and white sketches.

You should own this book!
Our 9 year old son brought this book home from the library, and now we're buying it for ourselves and as gifts. This book not only reads easily, and defines difficult words when needed, it gives the reader a look at Einstein's life, as well as explaining his revolutionary theories. We see how experiences in Einstein's personal life influenced his theories, and how his theories influenced history. Most important of all, I now understand the theory of relativity! The author does an excellent job of explaining Einstein's theories step by step, with simple pictures when needed. I have always wondered just how traveling at the speed of light could cause time to slow - that idea has never made sense to me, and no one has ever been able to explain it to me. Oh, how I wish Joyce Goldenstern could teach physics to all. This book is not only a must read, it is a must own for inquisitive adults, children, and parents of inquisitive children.

As a priest, pastor, teacher, and preacher of God's Word, I found this work by Karl Rahner, SJ, to benefit my research as I prepared my homilies and sermons, as well as to, edify my prayer and spiritual life. I highly recommend this work for those who are interested in the Word proclaimed in the liturgy and for those who simply need an aid to interpreting God's Word.

well worth the effort
This book takes some time and effort to read. The four essays span a huge range of topics but are masterfully woven together towards the end. If you are willing to be patient, reading all the essays in order will pay off. Goldbarth is simply brilliant.

a good reference
The lectures are actually earlier versions of what went into _morals and dogma_. so what makes this interesting are the rituals... but there is no 33 degree ritual unfortunately. I have heard the ones used today are a lot different. kinda pricy for a photocopy reprint, but still well worth it.

Seeking Victory on the Western Front: The British Army and Chemical Warfare in World War I
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (March, 2000)
Author: Albert Palazzo
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

A vivid detail of the British Army's WW I chemical tactics .
This is an amazingly missing aspect of the British and their gas techniques in the War to End All Wars. Mr. Palazzo has researched British tactics after the German War Machine instituted gas as a offensive force. John Keegan and Martin Gilbert's stirring accounts of the First World War seem to have glossed over a complete aspect of trench warfare. After the second Ypres when French troops or any troops for that matter encounter gas as a weapon. General Haig and other high ranking British military strategist, initiated and refined British chemical war techniques and technologies. This entire history for some reason has been missing in military (WWI) books and Albert Palazzo, tells us of its importance better than anyone. This fine book puts it up there with the TANK and BARBED WIRE.
