Modern Elementary Statistics, With Theoretical Supplement and Basic Programming (American Sciences Press Series in Mathematical and Management Scienc)
Published in Paperback by Amer Sciences Pr (1986)
Authors: Donald W. Zimmerman and Richard H. Williams
Amazon base price: $195.00

an elementary text written from an advanced point of view
One of the few statistics textbooks that has a notation consistent with what is found in mathematics texts in set theory, probability, and measure theory. The definitions are more consise and technically accurate than many in introductory books, although the explanatory material makes them clear for a beginning student.

A work of art of a difficult topic---almost magical
Here at last is a clear and interesting presenta- tion of a relatively difficult and technical topic. The common theme of probability gives the book and its chapters a nice continuity. At last we have a statistical work developed with logical and consistent notation. The examples and problems extend the written text in a natural way.

SUPER!
A fascinating overview of evolution, and of the evolution of human behavior and society in particular. The writing is accessible to everybody, and I highly recommend it to all people regardless of their scientific background. Well-written, with many helpful charts, etc. A real eye-opener!

Wait a minute...
I ordered this book thinking that it's many illustrations would make things "simple." But let me tell you, if you do not consider yourself an avid sewer and very familiar with your sewing machine, don't even consider getting this book. It will drive you insane. It's definitely written for people who have a very good understanding beyond "just the basics."

One reason this book is difficult to follow is that it focuses on VERY tailored covers. Not the kind you find at SureFit or the local linen store. The designs require measurements of your furniture piece from every conceivable angle.

If you love measuring and working out mathmatical formulations for hours...get this book. If not, look somewhere else.

Slipcovers and Bedspreads
I am so pleased to see a book that demands proper measurements and all the specific instructions on any project you intend to do. This should ensure your labor's not to be in vain. If I'm doing the work, I plan for the sewing to be perfect.

stylish slipcovers, step by step
This is *the* book if you want to seriously recover furniture. These ain't throw slipcovers, that's for sure. Good instructions with lots of diagrams and details to help you make beautiful custom-fitted covers for most any upholstered furniture.

Boring Sentimentality
I am a PP&M fan, but this album left me cold. The selection of songs was relatively uninspired given the repertoire, but it was the vocal interpretations that made it a snoozer. Even one of my all-time favorite songs, "Stewball," was performed in such a weepy, sappy manner that it called for a fast forward.

The use of guest artists seemed like an afterthought. If you are going to use a John Sebastian or a Tom Paxton, why not feature one of their own great songs?

I suppose there are folks who will get into this. You know, the type who get teary eyed singing "Kumbaya" around a camp fire. But, with the exception of an upbeat one-time throwaway called "Virtual Party," this album was a virtual desert.

One more thing...
I wanted to add... I generally find the amazon.com music reviews quite good, surprisingly so in many cases. It's one of the reasons I shop here. However, to refer to "Home Is Where the Heart Is" as an "antihomophobia song" is pretty outrageous, in my opinion. That song is not *anti* anything. It is pure affirmation. It's a beautiful song about love, compassion and understanding. You really should change your review.... Yours, Mark Lane (NY)

This is a book you not only read -- but see!
Lifelines, the immensely talented Caroline Leavitt's second novel, grips you from page one. As we explore the lives of the women, and plumb the vagueries and anxieties of life, we deeply feel all their joy and pain. In addition, everything from palm reading to photography is described with such great clarity that this is a book you not only read -- but see!
