This book was a wold of help for me i had no idea about the world of chins(or how to take care of them. it will help the first time chin owner and give alot of great info to help you on your way to becoming a happy chinchilla owner.

This is a great book for first time Chinchilla owners. Itcovers important topics such as feeding and diet, and how to detectpotential health problems. It also provides a brief background on Chinchilla history.

"Those Remarkable Women of the American Revolution" does not present a series of short biographies of specific women, but instead looks at specific ways in which women aided in the war effort. Karen Zeinert begins by reminding her young readers of the limited roles women who allowed to fulfill in the late 18th-century, emphasizing the point by contrasting those roles with the story of Deborah Sampson, who fought in the Continental Army under the name of Robert Shurtleff. After the detailing the conventional roles for women, Zeinert looks at what some women did during the American Revolution, not only in the army as in the case of the legendary Molly Pitcher, but as spies like the Quaker Lydia Darragh, becoming active in politics like Abigail Adams and Phyllis Wheatley, forming Ladies Associations that raised money and sewed uniforms, and on the home front taking care of home and farms while their husbands were off fighting. In her Afterword, Zeinert provides an ironic contrast between Loyalist Flora MacDonald who had raised troops for the king and the Colonial spy Ann Bates, reminding her readers that the book is not just about "American" women during the Revolutionary War.

The back of the book includes a Timeline that looks at both the key points of the war starting in 1774 when the First Continental Congress meet and the efforts of women, such as Penelope Barker drafting the Edenton Proclamation that same fall. Notes, a Bibliography and a list of suggestions for Further Reading provides sources for students who want to explore this topic in greater depth. "Those Remarkable Women of the American Revolution" provides both a sense of breadth and depth to its look at this particular topic. Zeinert could have provided just a few choice examples to make her case but she comes up with something slightly more substantive. The book is illustrated with his historic etchings and paintings, most of which are actually specific to the individuals and the stories Zeinert is writing about. Zeinert has written a companion volume about "Those Incredible Women of World War II," but I cannot believe that those more familiar stories are going to be more impressive than those about the women who crossed over much bigger lines during the American Revolution. I thought this was going to be a simple little book but it is quite a bit more than that.

It may be difficult to fit these titles into some curriculums but as a library reference they will provide lasting value. Karen Zeinert's Extraordinary Women Of World War I tells of women who took an active role in the war, serving as nurses, telephone operators, journalists and other working capacities. They involvement not only aided the war effort, it paved the way for women's rights and changing roles.

It can be such a battle to get a junior high or high school student to write a book report. I've found that if you help the student to choose a book that is interesting enough to keep him drawn in until the end of the story, the job is much easier. "Captured by Indians: The Life of Mary Jemison" is a fabulous example of the many, many enjoyable--and suitable--books that are available to the young reader. History is full of fascinating stories, and our own country's history provides so many stories worth reading. That Mary Jemison was a real person and not just a character created by a writer makes this book an even easier "sell" to the student. It should be emphasized that Karen Zeinert's edition of the transcript of Mary Jemison's life story, which she told in 1823, has many excellent features. For example, Zeinert includes an extremely helpful timeline incorporating the major events of Mary's life with major historical events (dates treaties were signed, etc.), which enhances the reader's understanding of the time period. Also included are hand-drawn maps, a few photographs, several (period) hand-drawn portraits of people who are part of the story. A very helpful glossary of terms appears at the end of the book--another item most useful to today's young readers. Note to teachers and/or parents: Zeinert has carefully edited out the sensationalism that was very much a part of the original work, and she points out in the "Background" section that author James Seaver was hired in 1823 to interview Mary Jemison in order to produce a "captive story"--a popular genre of the period--and that captive stories were often used as propaganda against the Native Americans, who were normally portrayed as savages in such works. Finally, a personal note: I found it utterly fascinating that in 1823 Mary Jemison made a most prophetic statement: "He (her son John) fell victim to the use of liquor, a poison that will soon exterminate the Indian tribes in this part of the country." Although she couldn't read or write, Mary Jemison was an intelligent, strong, and very brave woman. Her story is one that is worth reading. She shouldn't be an obscure figure in American history. She should be more widely known. Recommend this book to the young people around you!

This book was very informational. This book was also a great source to learn more about the Civil War. Not only did it focus on Van Lew, it also contains a plump amount of information on the Civil War. I enjoyed reading it and learning about a person of the Civil war that made a significant effect on the war, but not taught it text books. I wish there had been more about her personal life, but a lack of source of her personal life could be reasoning for this. It was also interesting that the last chapter explains how the information about Ezilabeth Van Lew has been found an saved over the years. I recommend this book to anyoe who enjoys reading about the Civil War and women of earlier eras.

It contains a good list of recommended further reading, as well as some photos(nothing too graphic, but definitely not giving a false idea of the conditions in Vietnam during the war). After reading this book, I was pleased to discover that some of the women's stories mentioned in this book, for example Maureen Nerli (USO) are also in the book A Piece of My Heart by Keith Walker, which I also recently read. Definitely a good choice for history teachers in elementary schools.

It has been proven that the Jews are a race that is not to be messed with (azns too). Everytime they face a huge problem, they always find a way to deal with it. In this non-fictional book, the author, Karen Zeinert, writes about the courageous Jews of Warsaw. The details are events described accurately. There were only a few thousand of Jews left in the ghetto and they managed to fight off the Nazis for weeks. There are plenty of photographs that helps the reader understand the people and setting.

Overall, this is a good book. It is enjoyable to read and also educational. I give it 4 stars out of 5.

In her latest book Zeinert offers a historical account of the violence of Bleeding Kansas, the unofficial battle over slavery in the territory of Kansas during the 1850's. It begins with the actions of abolitionist John Brown and his May 24 & 25, 1856 attack on pro-slavery settlers as a form of retaliation for the pro-slavery activists raid on Lawrence, KS, which had occurred a mere three days earlier. Thereby ensuing the territorial "reign of terror" for the next two years, pitting neighbor against neighbor. The Jayhawkers (anti-slavery guerrillas) versus pro-slavery supporters. The narrative then backtracks to the 1854 Kansas-Nebraska Act, a bill introduced by Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas, which stated both states would be admitted to the Union as free states and settlers could decide amongst themselves if they would allow slavery. The bill along with the electioneering that occurred between the two groups tells the tale of Bleeding Kansas and eventually leads to the start of the Civil War in 1861. Unfortunately Zeinert's narrative is only useful as a resource for a research paper. By lacking a more detailed timeline and additional information on the cast of characters students who usually enjoy reading the subject matter, will doubtfully find it entertaining. Moreover, some students may not know what a Jayhawker or Free Stater is, a glossary would have been helpful when reading. Nevertheless, the oral histories highlighted throughout the text offer an insider's view of the survivor's thoughts, opinions and feelings during this period history.
