Time for an update.
I received the book as a gift several years ago and enjoyed it immensely. Now,I think it is time to update the book, specifically the celebrities interviewed and functions centered around the name, such as the BobFest in Avon, Co, home of the bridge named Bob

Incredibly Accurate
I was given this book years ago, and found it to be enormously entertaining and fun to read. Being named Bob, I also found it's desciption of the "normal" Bob to be incredibly accurate. I have bought additional copies over the years to give to friends and employees also named Bob. Print some more!!

A must have for anyone named Bob, or anyone who knows a Bob.
THE BOB BOOK is a totally fact-based humorous sociology of men named Bob. It is a national bestseller and the bible when it comes to Bobs. Every famous Bob has played along, by answering the Bob Survey. This book couldn't have been written about men with any other name. Only Bob is a noun, a verb, a way of life. Plus, no one named Bob could have written it himself. Bobs just don't spend much time on self-reflection. This book is a must for any Bob in your life--and we all have one.

Sinatra without the warts.
First, you have to understand it's not a biography. Actually the book's premise is summed up very well by the Sinatra quote on the dust jacket. "I think my real amibition is to pass on to others what I know. It took me a long, long time to learn what I now know, and I don't want that to die with me." I think this book does that very well using a series of ancedotes culled from Mr. Sinatra himself as well as others. It covers things such as the Las Vegas "Rat Pack" years, his style of dress, his code of conduct, his loyalty to friends. The book succeeds in what it was meant to do, but to get a real feel for the total man I'd suggest reading one of the many fine biographies that are out there. Whether you love or hate Frank Sinatra you'll have to admit he was a very complex man who lived life on his own terms. This book will give you some insights into what drove him to be the way he was.

The REAL Frank
What a GREAT book about the Chairman Of The Board! The text and pictures are first-rate,and the captions quoting Frank are priceless. An absolute must for the genuine Sinatra fan, you will pull it off the shelf to read it for years to come.

Life Changing Material
What can I say that hasn't already been said? About 3 or 4 years ago I wasn't doing so well. I was looking for some guidance, some help to define myself and create my own identity. I came across this book on a sales rack and picked it up. I had been a Sinatra fan for awhile, had a few books and some albums. But this, this was something special. You come away from it really knowing who Mr. Sinatra really was. You get to know the man behind the "legend."

Immediatly I began to change the way I was. I began to relax, not worry so much. I changed my wardrobe (For years I had been kind of a bum, really not thinking about my dress) to more of a "classier" one. I became less of a cheapskate and helped any of my friends who needed help. Why? Because that's what Frank did! Not to mention I discovered "his way" to mixing drinks the way with women.

One cannot talk about this book without mentioning the excellent writing of Bill Zehme. He really gets to the soul of the experiences. The writing has the same flair as Sinatra's speech, always hip, always to the point. It's no wonder he has written the liner notes for the live Rat Pack cds. He really "knows" Frank and the boys and shows it.

So read this book. Who knows what could happen? You may come away from it with a new view on life.

Not Very Intimate
Was slightly disappointed in this collection of old magazine articles that try to delve in to the personal life of several famous celebrities. Most of the articles were written over 10 years ago! Also, the last 25% of the book consists of rehashed articles on the Letterman/Leno feud.

On the flip side, Zehme's writing is concise and the book zips along. covering 15-20 celebrities ranging from Howard Stern to Barry Manilow.

Still, Zehme seems to be holding back the good stuff for himself, perhaps that's why he seems so accessible to the stars.

Zehme is a writer for all readers!
In a profession that typically spends its time doing PR for the next "hit," Zehme has managed to create his own style filled with a simple candor and a wry humor that supercedes the typical celebrity drivel. Whether it be actors, musicians or talk show hosts, Zehme offers great insight into not only the characters themselves, but also into the ever-humbling plague of the writers who follow them. Unabashedly observant, always charming, this is a collection for anyone who reads, but especially those who think people, and celebrities in particular, are just plain funny.

Great Collection
This is one helluva package, journalistically speaking. Got it for Christmas from a pal and read it over the holidays. Showbiz writing usually eats it, but Zehme's work, much to my delight, doesn't eat it at all. Not even a tiny bit. In comedy slang, it kills. These pieces aren't simply written, they're meticulously crafted, surprisingly insightful and packed with intimate, often hilarious details. Sinatra, Beatty and Manilow are especially great. And Seinfeld, too. And Letterman. And Hef. Hell, they're all worth reading. Zehme even makes Heather Graham interesting, and that's nothing short of miraculous. Snap this one up right away!

the hardest working, nicest, most talented man in show busine
jay, this is the best book i have ever read, it truly is! it has everything that a reader could possibly want in a book. his stories are so heartwarming, that most people including me can relate to. his stories are told from jay's heart, with love to all of his fans. i had a chance of meeting jay back in 1996, the nicest person! He really does care about his fans. i personally think, jay is the funniest person i have ever heard. his comedy is brilliant, other people prefer letterman, or carson's comedy, the more classic, more goaled to the older generation of people. leno, truly has a brilliant, magnificent mind, in the way he does his show every single night of the week, and shows his care for his fans, i will tell you about a recent example, this past thursday night, he did a show in the dark, to help save energy, i know this may not sound like a big deal to most people, but this is just another example, of how nice, and generous he is. i always wish, that i knew him better, like a best friend, he has all the great qualities that i would want in a person, his wife is very lucky!! jay i have been watching you every night, keep up the great work. i hope you never retire, you are truly a genuis at what you do!! hope you have a peaceful and joyful life. godbless. p.s. my birthday is april 28 too, but in the year 1970.

A good life story of a funny guy
I like that Jay wrote this book himself. It doesn't have any boring parts. I've read this thing a million times since I actually am an aspiring commedian. Even though he's a generation behind me, he was similar to me when he was my age. His first trys to be funny at school were cool to hear about, since I did similar stuff. I swear to god, when I was 13, a teacher wrote something similar his teacher wrote, "If Jay studied as hard as does being funny, he'd be a good comedian." The stories and troubles with his parents are easy to identify with as a kid. He also gives a long look into his life on the road, such as playing at a college with geeks who wanted to study and not hear a comedian. (A--holes!) The book also has some sentimental and dirty parts, making it interesting all around. It's all pretty humorous and it's like he's actually telling you the stories, the way it's written sounds like the way he'd say it, well it's cause he DID. A good read if you've got a sense of humor.

He was hilarious!
I don't watch Leno, nor do I really care for his style of humor, but his book was absolutely hilarious! I would read in bed and laugh out loud every few minutes and my husband would say"It can't be THAT funny!" It was. The most entertainment from a book I've had in a long time. That's because my genre is historical or cultural. This was a nice change and well worth it

Regis 6/15/94-5/19/95 and Some of his yesterdays
Regis's book logs many of the days(incl some holidays) between 6/15/94-5/19/95 with some of the yesterdays prior to 6/14/94 .....Good intro by the Regis and Cathy Live staff at that time( Michael Gelman and Cathy Lee Gifford) Gelman still Gelman and Cathy Lee ,has moved on for even better someday.. ,plus there is much levity through out( It was given as a gift to me for Xmas 2000,I've skimmed through the entire book and got a few chuckles without even getting to much into the NY ,NY details(photos were great,& joke about Perry Como quite funny). It ends with smoothness and ease:as Regis, in his biography says to the reader" I've got to find my plane tickets, back my bags and get ready for the next show. After all,I'm only one man". 12/27/00 abj

Funny and enlightening
Reading this book is like sitting down with Regis and listening to him tell you stories. You will be able to look deeper into the man that engages in Host Chat with Kathie Lee everyday. This book is an example of how far Regis really came in life and how hard he had to work for it. This can almost be a self-help book in a way because it portrays the commitment to excellence put forth by Regis to achieve his dream....and did he ever!

A great, fun read!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I learned things about Regis that you won't learn by watching him on TV. I enjoyed reading about his trials and tribulations of his career, from his early days to the present. I have recommended this books to others. Whoever has my copy, please return it! This is one book you can read again.

Lost in the Funhouse: The Life and Mind of Andy Kaufman

Average review score:

Best Read on Kaufman, Beats "Revealed" by Far
Between, Lost in the Funhouse, and, Andy Kaufman Revealed, this is by far the superior book. It has far more info about Andy. Even though footnotes and sources are nonexistent, when differences in stories occur between the books, Funhouse comes across as far more believable. Unlike Bob Zmuda's, Revealed, Funhouse does not try to dazzle you with the brilliance of Zmuda or the Zmuda /Kaufman team.

Some people found the writing style annoying and at times it is. There were some sentences I read 3 or 4 times yet never did understand. But if I only read writers whose style I liked I'd do very little reading.

This book painted a somewhat unflattering picture of Kaufman and so ultimately did Zmuda's although in the latter it may not have been intentional. Both books led me to believe Andy was not a very nice person. But I'll never know the truth and for those of us who only knew him through TV the question is irrelavent. What is relavent is that he was and remains - interesting.

The North Star
I've read this book and it is a gem. Having kept the flame of Andy's legacy alive on the World Wide Web for the past four years, I must say that I read this book with a little more of a critical eye than your average Andy Kaufman fan. Bill Zehme did not let me down and I am happy to have a copy of this fine book in my possession. Bill's biography is fascinating and sheer poetry.

I know that Andy's family loves the book because I've spoken to them and they've told me so. I don't think a writer can receive higher praise than to receive it from the immediate family of the subject.

This biography will stand the test of time and years from now will surely serve as the only comprehensive biography of Andy Kaufman. Zehme is the guiding light, the North Star when it comes to the life and times of Andrew Geoffrey Kaufman.

Thanks Bill, I wish the movie "Man on the Moon" would have had half the content, spirit and meaning of your fine tome.

Lost in the Funhouse Does Andy Proud
I never really cared much about Andy Kaufman until I read Lost in the Funhouse over the holiday weekend. Some friends of mine, diehard Andy mavens, recommended it, and I'm glad they did. In a nutshell, Wow! In fact, I'm about to embark on a second reading, and that doesn't happen often. But once was just not enough to fully absorb and appreciate all the fascinating detail and nuance author Bill Zehme has injected into this thoroughly entertaining, though very tragic, tale of the real-life Boy Who Cried Wolf.

The interplay of voices and brilliant, often dizzying prose carries shades of William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury, another inventive novel that intrigued and affected me deeply from the start--and even more so after a second perusal. That's not to say that Funhouse requires two readings, though, because it doesn't. But when a book is this good, you don't want it to end, and so I guess a second time around is one way of sustaining my enjoyment and delaying the inevitable postpartum funk.

The vast majority of readers, Kaufman fans or not, will love this book. But even if they don't, that's just as well. Andy would have wanted it that way. Now that I know more about him, I'm certain Andy would have hated to see his life story receive wimpy, lukewarm responses, because those kind aren't from the gut. And Andy's performance art was all about the gut, even if it meant rubbing people the wrong way and getting booed off the stage. Then again, he was equally thrilled by a standing ovation.

Except for his stint on Taxi, a job Andy apparently despised, his was a world devoid of "jokes" and self-affirming laughter, something most comics thrive on. But Andy wasn't a "comic" in the truest sense (he fancied himself a "song-and-dance man"), and thus couldn't have cared less whether he got laughs or jeers. One was just as good as the other. In light of that, he was, it seems, the most intrepid, invincible performer who ever walked the earth. Zehme's book illustrates this unique quality and many others not only factually, but stylistically and emotionally. By marshaling illuminating detail, interspersing myriad voices, including the subject's own, and crawling under Andy's thick skin, Zehme has broken new ground and created something quite remarkable here.

I now realize that there is absolutely no way to effectively encapsulate the life and mind of Andy Kaufman with so-called "normal" prose. Only by literally and figuratively entering his roller- coaster world and his often bizarre and troubled psyche can one even begin to understand him. And since most of us have neither the inclination nor the ability nor the courage to take such a plunge, we're lucky to have someone who's done it for us. And masterfully, I might add. Mr. Zehme, you took a chance and did Andy and literature proud. Congrats and, on behalf of the man himself, tenk you veddy much!

Who Want's to be Me?
This book is fair. If you are a Regis follower and watch his LIVE show this book will be boring. He has told many of these stories on the air.

I like Regis, but I wanted to read something different from what we hear on his daily show.

Regis likes to RANT!
OK, I'm an all-out Who Wants To Be a Millionaire fan, so I expected to like this book. (Hey, don't expect to like a biography, and certainly not an autobiography, if you don't like the person it's about and you don't like their style.)

Judging by the style of the writing, I believe this book was written by Regis sitting down with a tape recorder and telling stories. If you like his stories on Live! you'll like this book. He tells of travel frustrations, chainsaw envy, celebrity troubles, and Millionaire success. The style of the writing is just like his speaking style: "I wanted a CHAINSAW! And no one took me SERIOUSLY!"

The book includes plenty of comments from Joy and the two Philbin daughters, excerpts from the Live! show, David Letterman Top Ten lists, etc. This is no War and Peace, but it's a good, fun read. Here's hoping it will give me some subjects to bounce off of Regis when I make it to that Millionaire seat.

Who Wants To Be Me?
Regis Philbin, one of America's most know figures in the television entertainment industry, has taken this book very high. In here, you can expect short, true stories that really do make you chuckle. These make Regis what he is. I do recommend this book! -John
