All But Forgotten Heroism from a "Nonspectator" Nation
All too often, Poles are portrayed in popular Holocaust materials as spectators towards the Nazis. Nothing could be further from the truth. Poles resisted the German invaders from day one, and throughout the almost six years of brutal Nazi occupation. Then, as the Soviet Armies were driving the German Army out of Poland, the Polish guerillas rose up against the Germans in open warfare. The most prominent uprising took place in Warsaw. The Soviets refused to help (except to a token extent towards the end of the Uprising) because they knew that the Polish guerillas wanted a free Poland and not the soon-to-be Soviet satellite. So, against impossible odds, the Poles fought for 63 days. The end result was the almost total destruction of Warsaw by the vindictive Germans, most of which took place AFTER the Poles had surrendered. Even though the wisdom or otherwise of the Uprising has been endlessly debated, there is no doubt that a simply passive response to a foreign occupant was simply inconsistent with the Polish spirit.
