Buy this BEFORE some adult version!
Both elementary and high school readers get something from this book. The straightforward prose coveys this artist's powerful talent, humanity and relevance without being sappy. My students like to be read to when they work - its great to see them process and internalize this information as they struggle with these skills and concepts. Clean design and beautiful photos lay it all out simply. If more art history grad students would get to the point this well and this fast, I could coach art history as a sport.

Great Book for Intro to Gridded Portraiture in HS Art
I'm an artist and art teacher, and I recently read this book tomy high school art students as an introduction to gridded portraiture.Don't let the age 9-12 reading level put you off--my high schoolstudents really enjoyed learning about Chuck Close, and were impressedby his work and his life story. In addition to having some greatpictures of Close's work, the book has a lot to say about the artist'sability to develop strategies to deal with his learning disabilities, and his perseverance to continue to work despite an injury that lefthim paralyzed from the neck down. Many of the students could relateto Close's learning differences, and viewed his story as veryinspirational. I like this book so much, in fact, that I'mrecommending it on my website where I have a detailed lesson planbased on teaching kids portraiture via a similar gridded method! END

this is
This is a clear and inspiring story of the life and art of a great american artist. (and not as expensive and art speaky as a catalogue raisonne) Good for children and adults. I highly recommend it!!!!!!

well-chosen parenting advice from experts
Guiding Young Children's Behavior: Helpful Ideas for Parents and Teachers from 28 Early Childhood Experts edited by Betty Farber, M.Ed. Preschool Publications. 1999. 329 pp. $24.95.trade paper.

Farber's compilation of parenting advice and tips is a notable, comprehensive handbook for contemporary childrearing. The advice and tips blend the best of tradition and the contemporary. The material knowledgeably selected by Farber gives guidance for being actively and personally involved in the upbringing of children while not becoming overbearing. The numerous innovative, relevant, and practical tips from the experts give guidance for children on the tried-and-true principles of self-control and consideration for others without relying exclusively or excessively on strict, narrow discipline or parental dictates. This is the valuable, timely core of Farber1s book. The experts1 experienced, imaginative guidance is both challenging--occasionally seemingly fun--and instructive, implying that acceptable behavior need not be laborious or constricting.

Each of the chapters of Farber's book is a selection from the writings of one of the number of early childhood experts dealing with a major activity or concern of parenting. Editor Farber herself has much experience in the fields of teaching and parenting, including publishing Parent and Preschooler Newsletter and teaching and administration in early childhood programs. For many parents and teachers, her book can bring enlightened, productive solutions to seemingly insoluble problems and deadlocks of childrearing.

a grandmas appreciation for this loving book.
As a grandmother, I was thrilled to read about practical and loving ways to set limits for my grandchildren. I especially recommend that you check out the chapters on Separation, Helping your child to eat well, and Sending positive messages. This book is my gift to all my friends with children or grandchildren.

Practical and easy to follow; makes mentoring task feasible.
Betty Farber's "Guiding Young Children's Behavior" has concrete suggestions and practical applications in simple, direct language. I'm mentoring a child and have no experience at all with children. Farber's book not only presents the ideas, it also gives you real language to use with children. Now I can say what I need to communicate in a friendly, non-threatening manner, yet with authority. It seems to be working. My chapter favorites: Teaching children responsibility; Problem solving approaches to discipline; Setting limits. Also sent copies to 2 cousins and they agree--the book is practical, informative, and filled with great strategies. They like it and I recommend it highly.

This series turned me into someone who likes to cook!
The "Great Taste, Low Fat" series is fabulous -- this book as well as the two others I've purchased and dog-eared. The pasta dishes are excellent. The recipes are loaded with yummy, healthy, fresh ingredients. But the recipes are also very practical -- e.g., when a recipe calls for beans, it specifies the canned variety. Many recipes start with similar steps so that over time I've gotten better at cooking them. I'm really pleased with the series and plan to buy more.

This book is a "must-have" in any kitchen!
I've bought many recipe books that just sit on the shelf, but this one I use! It has wonderful recipes with easy-to-find ingredients. I love the way it sits on the counter for quick reference while you are preparing your meal. And all pages are heavily coated cardboard so you can wipe them clean if they get splashed. I'm learning to cook vegetarian and there are many great meatless recipes too. It has all the basic pasta recipes and many more - I wouldn't be without it! Highly recommend! I'm going to order the rest in the fanfare series.

Great book for teens!
Do you remember being in junior high and all those changes? Or are you in junior high and wondering if you are the only one with all these thoughts and conflicts running around in your mind? This book is a junior high girl's diary of her talks with God. She talks to him about her new house, new school, new church group and how frightened she is with all these changes. We read her thoughts as she handles her feelings that a new teacher doesn't care, and that her parents' rules are too crazy. We watch as she shares with God her fear about her parents' pending divorce. We see her mature in her strength in God as she goes through this school year. This is a nice book that a teenager should find comforting by realizing that they aren't the only one dealing with feeling that their legs are too thin, nose is too flat, that they are too shy or wondering if God is real and answers their prayers.

Teens will relate as they search to get closer to God
What's really cool about 13-year old Leslie, who wrote every single letter in this book, is how she figured out that you can talk to God like a friend, and then how she went ahead and did it. Any young person who wants to feel closer to God (but who wonders what the "right language" is supposed to be) should read this wonderful year-long diary. Before you know it, you'll be wanting to start writing your own set of letters to God.

A great book for helping teens learn where to turn for help
This book takes on all the trials of teenagehood--pimples, dates, gym class, even parents contemplating divorce--and gives her readers an idea of just where to turn for help.
