A Wonderful Shock
I am very aware of my body and the state of my skin, paticuarly my facial skin. This book wonderfuly explains how to understand your skin better in a way that is easy to read. I just happend to pick it up in the "teenage" area of my local library while waiting for time to pass. I found the scriptures and comments on the side of each or every other page refreshing and uplifting, you could not find such truth or LIFE in Cosmopolitan Magazine. Kim Boyce has found a wonderful way in helping teens (and even adults) find a healthier way to look at yourself your skin and even your soul in her book "Beauty To Last A Life Time"!

Florence Nightingale
I began to read this book because I thought the cover of the book was interesting. A picture of a kind-faced woman in a hospital by an ill man.
This book started on a young wealthy girl, named Florence. Her sister, Parthe, would always have parties and meet new people. Both of them would never have to attend school or even read any study material. However, Florence was different. She enjoyed reading and studying. She hated dolls, parties, and when guests came to visit her family, she would never greet them or even try to get to know them. She would just lock herself up in her own room. Sometimes, she even felt like as if she was a monster, for she was the only girl around who hated parties and whatever the other girls loved to do. No one, except for boys would have interest in study. As soon as Florence grew older, she tried to attend Medical School. Her parents were worried, for the tradition in her family was never to study, and when you grow older, you marry a rich and wealthy man and give birth to family. But Florence had no interest in it. The more she read about Medical, the more she determined to help the poor, and sick. When she was young, she pretended to heal ill people with her dolls. So now and then, she would visit the poor and ill and clean their huts, feed them, and accompany them. Rumors started about her, like, why would a wealthy girl like her, help filthy people? But she ignored all of them. Her dream was to help people, and she did. After secretly sneaking out of the house, she trained herself as a nurse. As soon as she was professional enough, she opened her own hospital, called the Nightingale Hospital. During World War II, many of their soldiers were injured, and Florence and her nurses were there at their needs twenty-four/seven. They called her the "Lady-with-the-Lamp." It became so famous that Florence was getting popular. Later in her life, she meets a gentlemen. They fall in love, however, Florence could not marry him, for she believed that if she did, her dream of taking care of injured people would be ruined, and she thought that it was more important. The Nightingales, soon accepted Florence to own a hospital and help people when she was successful. Although Florence is different, she is different in a unique and special way.
This book inspired me to be someone like Florence Nightingale after reading.

A Story For All Ages

The Ghost Memoirs of Robert Falcon Scott

excellent for older elem. students
Older children will enjoy reading the story because of the format Mr. Derby used. It'll make history come alive for them and educate them at the same time.

History on line.
I found this book to be a fastinating fictional story of Robert Falcon Scott, written in today's language that children understand - the internet.

I have always believed that Mr. Scott deserved a more prominent place in history.

Was I ever surprised!
When my son and husband chose The Great Adventures of Sherlock Holmes for our monthly book discussion, I was certain I'd be bored senseless but figured it was only fair that they choose some of the titles, too. Far from bored, however, I actually loved the droll accounts of Sherlock's sleuthing talents. In fact, as I read, I could "hear" a radio broadcast of the stories in my head. As it turns out, recordings of the mysteries are available, as are films of the adventures. It will be interesting to see how these compare to the version in my head.

If you are sharing these stories with young readers, you may want to read the first story aloud. This proved helpful to my son, who initially had a little trouble "getting into" the rhythm of the narrative. After "The Solitary Cyclist," however, he was happily on his own. He is now tackling a two-volume collection of Doyle's mysteries.

Doyle at his best
This book is great. Although there are two other books like this one, I prefer this one the best. My favorite mystery in it is "The Red Headed League." An honorable mention is "The Engineer's Thumb." You won't regret buying this book, so... go ahead!

Love Hina series rules! :~)
Love Hina is one of the best Manga's I've ever read. A fantastic romantic comedy. Wish there were more like it in the US.

Volume #8 takes off right after #7, and while a bit reminiscent of the last time he ran away, it is still a very exciting, funny and exhilarating story! The whole cast appears in this volume, as well as a new cute girl... Could it be a long lost twin? Hmmm I'll let you find out but I'm not saying of who! Seta knows, I'm sure, but so far he hasn't said a word!

Lots of action, swimsuits (and yes that is a leaf bikini Naru is wearing on the cover! LOL), and plenty of Su's creative hi-tech hi-jinx!

So did the Ronin Trio get into Tokyo U? You find out on the last page, and no peeking!

It's Turtle City!
I laughed so much at this one from the huge turtles popping up all over to poor Keitaro luck--even Naru's saying he's immortal or something to live thru so much. The tension is high as the girls try to get to him in time for him to enroll at Tokyo U--he only has 5 days from the posted results. Seta's back & weird as ever--is he a secret agent or something? His van can go underwater(guess it has to be indestructible the way he crashes into things constantly) & he manages to show up just when they need him most(like when Poor Keitaro, stranded on an island, is eyballing his pocket lint for food). Tama-chan is adorable as usual & terrorized worse than ever by a romantic giant turtle. There's a few mysteries to be solved as well--great volume.

A great series that gets better with each new release
I'm not sure what drew me into Love Hina in the first place, but each successive graphic novel seems to get better.

My initial thoughts on Love Hina was that it was just another one guy/thousands of girls manga with too contrived a premise to really enjoy. And after the first few, it still felt that way. But soon enough, the writing and characters won me over and steered away from some of the cliches that normally bombard this type of manga.

Love Hina rises above most romantic comedy style manga by keeping a good balance of romance and comedy to keep it from being too saccharine or too goofy. Another aspect that's refreshing is that not every single girl that Keitaro, the main protagonist, comes across falls for him. All the girls in the comic have very distinct personalities that play off each other so well, and yes I'll admit it, all of them are pretty cute in their own ways.

Getting back to volume 9 though. Volume 8, to me, seemed like it would be a good ending to the series, where it seems all the loose ends get tied up. After all, the series is mostly about Keitaro trying to get into Tokyo University and he finally does at the end of volume 8. I didn't think there would be anything much further to take the Hinata clan, but there are some nice revelations and stories in volume 9 to suggest Love Hina has a long way to go before the premise gets exhausted.

It starts out with Keitaro having an unfortunate accident at Tokyo U (a pretty over-the-top accident, even for Love Hina) forcing him to take a leave of absence. Other stories include Motoko's sister visiting Hinata House, Shinobu having her first real date with Keitaro-sempai and Seta proposing to Haruka. Oh yeah, we finally get to see where Keitaro and Naru's relationship is going too.

What sets it apart from previous volumes is that it looks like several of the girls are starting to fall for Keitaro. Motoko, Shinobu and even Kitsune start to display more affection for him. Because this is happening in volume 9 and not right at the beginning of the series makes it much more believable and based in reality. Series like Tenchi Muyo and Ranma 1/2 get bogged down with so many love triangles that have no basis for existing that it just gets tiring.

The comedy, writing and drawing in the series is as good as ever. Although there are still several obvious grammatical errors that make it feel like it was rushed. (Shinobu says "I'm going right to be here to cheer you on!!" when it should be ...going to be right here...) The editing needs some work, but other than that, Love Hina volume 9 doesn't disappoint.

A nice transition into the endgame
If you liked the earlier books in the series, then you'd like this one. Book 9 starts on the day of the entrance ceremony for new Toudai, or a.k.a., Tokyo U., students. Keitaro, as usual, managed to get himself in trouble immediately, and things don't go as he had planned or hoped. Despite everything, however, Keitaro finds himself involved in various situations, in the various stories within the book, that inevitably ends up with him on the receiving end of a Naru special. Good thing the guy is immortal!

The stories contained within Book 9 are fun. If you have the Christmas Special DVD, also, episode 25's [very basic] storyline is in here, and there's a story about Shinobu and her wishes. I would definitely read the one about Haruka and Seta, though, as its plot concludes in Book 13 and provides a good intro to Book 13.

Wow
I must say that I don't read many books, but once I picked this one up and started to read I just couldn't put it down. It took me two days to finish. I'm 29 and have been to many seminars and how to get rich programs. Ken's thinking is simple yet extremely informative. This book was referred to and I will continue refer to many others. I will read this book again, and again. THE INFORMATION IS POWERFUL.

I'm speechless
I met this author 2 times during Tony Robbins' seminar and had some short talks. I didn't know he is a millionaire and a writer until today. I'm speechless now. Although I haven't read this book, but I will definitely buy one. I believe it will show how a young guy turning his ordinary life to an exciting success, through his true story.

The Gold's Gym Book of Strength Training for Athletes

Written from the perspective of an athlete
This is a classic book in the field, rather unique because it discusses strength training from the perspective of an athlete as opposed to a bodybuilder only. Ken Sprague is the owner and operator of the first Gold's Gym, the original strength training center. The book includes pictorials of various exercises and a discussion of lifting strategy. It stresses the importance of weight lifting movements that mirror athletic motions.

Devotions With a Sense of Humor
This book contains approximately 90 daily devotions for teenagers. I have two teenagers, and we read the book for family devotions at the dinner table. The book is primarily written by Ken Davis, a Christian comedian, writer, and speaker who appeals to all ages. Most of the devotions use humor to make their point, and all are interesting. The devotions in this book are equally good for Junior High or High School youth and for both sexes. They are also good for all denominations. (The only downside to the book is that some of the devotions are a little long when you are hungry and want to eat dinner!)
