Fantastically fun book for kids with curiosity!

A must for every family home library
"Every map tells a story," and this colorful and engaging tour of the world of maps tells dozens of stories about maps, mapmaking, and mapmakers. There are ancient maps, subway maps, a map of the location of dogs in the author's neighborhood (she hates to be chased when she jogs), weather maps, relief maps, maps of the stars (both celestial and Hollywood), and a map of the brain. The writing style is both informal and informative. If only all science and social studies textbooks were written this well!

The beetle and me a love story
this was a great book, this is the first book i have read in a long time my dad asked if it was good and i said yes and he said it must be becuase i never read and i never put this one down. I found this book after asking the librarian what some good books are and he handed me this book i thought it was going to be dumb but it wasnt. This book is about a 15 year old girl who is becoming a freshmen and doesnt have a car everyone in her family are mechanics and she wants to rebuild her dads old puple VW bug and he doesnt think it is a great idea because it had been sitting in their ice house for so long but he gave in and let her take it out and work on it she spent her whole summer working on this car but then when the school year starts she and her friend billy take it out for a spin and something happens and there is oil everywhere and she doesnt know whats wrong and she doesnt want anyhelp from anyone so she finaly lets Billy look at it and he finds out that their is a crack in her crankcase and she will have to get a new one so for christmas her parents buy her a new one and the car is fine and runs so on christmas eve after church Billy comes over and she gives him the bug on loan till she turns 16 because when Billy was little his dad left them and doesnt send money so he cant go to college and works at his moms garden shop for christmas to sell trees. This was a great book and i would like to read more of her books...

The Bug Called Love
In simple, straightforward language, Karen Romano Young unfolds how a seemingly awkward yet strong and determined heroine comes to terms with her dreams, her family, and herself. Daisy Pandolfi is a believable heroine who makes no excuses for wanting what she wants. She doggedly restores their old VW Bug and discovers heartbreak, disappointment, and love in the process. Her strength was an inspiration to me -- and I'm 23! I wish I was like that when I was 15.

The book is a love story, true, but not in the mushy line of commercial teen flicks. The romance aspect develops slowly, surely, imperfectly. But at the heart of it all was how Daisy tackled her independence. In a quiet exchange that moved me to tears, Daisy tells her father not to tell her what to do, just to tell her when she's doing it wrong. In the end, it IS a love story -- of a girl for her dreams, of a girl for her family.

I sincerely enjoyed the different characters that Karen Romano Young painted in this book, and I look forward to reading her other works.

Wanted to like it more than I did
I wanted to like Video more than I did. Initially, the plot sounded intriguing: an 8th grade teacher assigns his students the project of observing another person in order to hone their skills as observers (for science and writing, I think). Eric is assigned to observe Janine Gagnon, a peer with an attitude problem. Janine can't choose anyone worth observing (in her opinion) so she chooses herself as the focus of her studies.

Eventually, Eric come across information about Janine that may account for her attitude and her anti-social behavior, which is driving away her friends. He sets out to do something with he information he has found.

The plot was not as compelling as I had hoped, and the subplots, such as they were, confused the issue and did not seem to enhance the main storyline. Janine was such an unlikeable character that I wasn't interested in seeing her problem solved. The alternating points of view, including some confusing third person portions at the beginnings of the chapters, made the story more confusing. I loved The Beetle and Me, the author's previous book, and recommend it highly. This one, however, is less appealing.

Suspenseful, moving
A bully of a girl who doesn't understand the changes in her social circle, a boy flooded with disappointment, a video camera, and a handsome stranger -- these elements are woven together in a believable suburban setting that is immediately recognizable. The kids, with the class assignment to observe another person and keep a journal of their observations, are caught up in a frightening series of events that had me glued to the book until the final page. Karen Romano Young paints complex portraits of her young characters; they are each a pain in the neck in some ways, but each touching and sympathetic in others. A fine novel.

Better Than Beetle
I enjoyed this book more than The Beetle and Me. I won't go into plot much because the above reviewer has covered that well enouh. The book is told from three seperate points of view. The first, an unlikable 8th grader named Janine. The second, Eric, a boy in a leg cast who has been away at school for three years and now finds himself in public school with kids he has lived near but doesn't know. The third voice is used sparingly. It is an omniscient voice that opens each chapter and at first, I found myself confused (but intrigued) trying to guess what this was all about. The omniscient POV is used rarely and each time it is used, you seem to peeking ahead to a final conclusion. I liked it as a plot device. I also liked how the author was able to take this mean and nasty little girl and make me care about her--that is a difficult task. Well done!

Gives one a taste of scientific research in the arctic
I was one of the scientists whose work was featured in the book. It will give all readers an idea of the difficulities and rewards of research in the arctic. The figures are wonderful and the text informative and interesting and will instill an appreciation and wonder for this unique environment.

A great learning book
This book is about a little harp seal who just ventured out into the sea. One day he wakes up hungry, and his mother feeds him. He has white fur and blubber to protect him from the cold. I think this is a great book to educate children about the life of a seal. I found it interesting that a mother seal leaves their young shortly after they are born. The pup must then learn to live on its own. A polar bear tries to attack Little Harp Seal, and thankfully, his mother comes to the rescue. The cycle continues with each generation of seals. I would give this book five thumbs up for the illustrations. There were graphic and very detailed pictures.

Horrible, no plot whatsoever, dissapointing read
This was possibly the worst book I've ever read, simply because there was no plot. It's 192 pages of nothing. This main character, who we learn next to nothing about EVER, goes through life. That's it. Not even an event. Oh, she sees a newspaper article about a girl getting kidnapped, throws the papers in the local river, gets scared, her neighbours move, and the move into their house. But do we get a whiff of ANY details about moving? The girl's feelings? Nope. As comic book guy would say, worst book EVER.
