Robert E Lee
Knute Rocken Young Athelete by Guernsey Van Riper Jr.is an excellent book for kids eleven to fifteen years of age. I would recommend
this book to boys more then girls because of the fact the main charter is a
young man and in the most parts of the book is about Knute as an
athlete. In this book, Knute the main charter, does many breath taking
things. Guernsey Van Riper Jr. gets the reader caught on his hook to
read this book. The events make them want to fall out of their chair.
Knute has a sister Anne who takes him out to the berry patch to gather
berries. On their way back from the berry patch Knute decides that he
wants to go swimming so Anne gives in and joins Knute. Suddenly . I
will leave you hanging. Try to get your hands on this book before it is
gone, Also try to get your hands on some of the other books that Guernsey
Van Riper Jr. has written.

interesting perspective on Confederacy
I had the opportunity not only to read Dr. Young's book, but to interview about it as well. He is a knowledgeable historian and very fact-conscious, as well as understanding the larger issues at hand. I recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in the American Civil War because it will provide you with a unique story about one player in this immense drama.

Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible: Based upon the King James Version/Thumbed Indexed/Unabridged
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (1987)
Author: Robert, Ll.D. Young
Amazon base price: $30.95

The concordance I like the best...
Young's concordance has a unique style of cataloging words: like most concordances, Young's lists all the occurrences of each King James Version (KJV) English word, but with the twist that under each English word, it separates the underlying Hebrew or Greek words that were translated into the indexed English word. As an example, the word "love" might be the word you want to look up. Under the word "love" will appear the Greek word "agapao," with all its references in order. Also will appear the Greek word "phileo," with all of its references.

This is really neat, since it gives you a peek behind the KJV text to get at the translators' thoughts in a certain verse. You are also able to compare their use of the English word as a translation of the various Hebrew or Greek words that underly it. The only drawback of the Young's is the lack of a really effective way to research all the words translated in the KJV from a certain Greek or Hebrew word, for instance the word "phileo," which has several English translations. Young's does have an index of this information, but you are forced to look up each English word in order to find the various related verses. For a comprehensive word search on a specific Hebrew or Greek word, Strong's concordance may provide a better choice...

Nevertheless, Young's is my first choice for day-to-day use and completeness.

Poignant and inspiring
Getting inside the head of such a great thinker is a wonderful opportunity. The only negative comment I could make about this book is that a few of the passages included from Hansberry's lesser-known plays were not as powerful as the passages from speeches, journals, and A Raisin in the Sun. It is tragic that the world lost a truly gifted and spirited writer at such a young age. If you enjoyed A Raisin in the Sun, you'll also find this a rewarding read.

I Can Relate
I remember reading this book thinking that I could relate to the author perfectly well. Though I am not a playright, I do understand a lot of what she is saying. There should and will never be a borderline or a glass ceiling or anything else to hold me down. You are who you are regardless of what is . . . There is no turning back only that which is to be gained and won.

When I think of Lorraine Hansberry I think of a woman who achieved the impossible in an impossible time. She completed her plays with such intensity and flair . . . As if she lived and researched each every act.

Nevertheless, I feel that Hansberry was stating that to be "Young, gifted, and black," is clearly to be aware of who and what you are . . . and to take this knowledge of who and what you are and to run with it. Taking a chance when given a chance, or rather taking a chance and creating an opportunity with merely a bit of the gift that you had.

I will always remember what Thurgood Marshall, he basically stated that "He did the best with what he had." Is that being merely good or is that being the best. I believe that the concept of this book is not to be mistaken. I believe Hansberry is saying, "Hey sister, hold your head up high. It does not matter what this world thinks of you. It only merely matters about what you can do for yourself and your fellowman. Do you know your gifts? Hey write it down. You are worth perfecting."

Lorraine Hansberry did wonders in her lifetime she did so much for her community and her fellowman. My question to myself and others is . . . What about your gifts? Hey write them down. They are worth perfecting.

It was amazing
I found this book really solefull. I am not black or gifted but I feel that I relate to Lorraine Hansberry in many ways. I recomend this unique format to anyone who wants deep reading that flys by!

Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible

Makes Strong's look STRONG!
First you must have Young's translation of the Holy Bible, written in the late 1800's, for the concordance to be of any use. The translation appears to be nothing more than someone trying to make a name for himself by producing a translation that is as different as possible from the KJV. After reading his prefaces I came away with the impression that he was simply challenging, in a nasty way, the proponents of the KJV. The concordance is just about useless. It is incomplete and not user friendly. For example, as soon as I got it I went straight to Matthew 1:1 to see how useful it would be. Of two very significant words in the Young translation "roll" and "birth," neither were listed in the concordance.

Slightly better for word studies than Strong's
Young's concordance has been a favorite among Bible students for many years.

Although Strong's is more popular and has its strengths, Young's is better for word studies due in part to the way it "analyzes" English words.

For instance, most students know that several Greek or Hebrew words can be translated by one English word. Young shows this by analyzing the English word showing all of the Greek or Hebrew words it translates and then lists the verses containing each occurrence of the various Greek or Hebrew words. This makes for more accurate word studies.

Highly recommended. One caveat: this is the original version and not the corrected and updated version.

Consistent word usage from the original language
It is not shocking to see the blatant ignorance of Bob from Ft. Pierce, FL, as too many are misinformed about the way a concordance is to be used. First of all, a concordance, any concordance, is only useful for a specific Bible version. Young's is only useful for the old King James version that first came out in 1611 in England. So Bob is mistaken about having to have Young's translation. Certainly there is nothing nasty about Dr. Robert Young's works. Bob is correct in learning that "roll" and "birth" are in Young's translation: "Matt 1:1 A roll of the birth of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham." But the King James reads thus: "Matt 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham." And another version I have says this: "Matt 1:1 The scroll of the lineage of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham." Some document listing the birth record of Jesus seems to be in view here. On page 104 in Young's concordance, under the English word BOOK, in section 6, are listed "Book, roll, (the Greek)" and "biblos" (transliteration of the Greek). Strong's number for "biblos" is 976 (see Strong's concordance). Seventeen occurrences of 976 can be found in the Greek Scriptures. On page 387 in Young's concordance, under the English word GENERATION, in section 4. are listed "Birth, origin (the Greek)" and "genesis" (transliteration of the Greek). Strong's number for "genesis" is 1078. Two occurrences of 1078 can be found in the Greek Scriptures. The reader from Vermont as well as the one from Oklahoma are quite accurate in their reviews. Young's concordance leads one to the consistent usage of the original words. btodd@pe.net

Don't give up on Waller, just rent the movie!
I had read Bridges before I'd ever seen the movie, but after doing a Tearjerker marathon DVD night with the girlfriends, I was struck by how much better the movie was than the book. I think Waller really did make an effort to reflect how these two people feel and what they meant to each other, even years later, but failed miserably to do so. Maybe it was the challenge of trying to put it all in words versus watching the romance being play out on screen. I have not read his other books, but I certainly am looking for them now (that's why I was on amazon.com today). I'm not giving up on him, but I would recommend the movie over the book any time!

A fine romance
I re-read this book this weekend and was surprised at the reviews here. Some really hated the book and others loved it.
I read the book a couple of years ago and liked it. I don't understand the hateful reviews.

You know, of course, that an arsonist destroyed the Cedar Bridge on Tuesday, 3 September, 2002. That's why I decided to read the book again. I was in Iowa at the time of the movie premiere in 1995, but did not attend any events connected with it.

A comment on page 78 reflects the view of the average Iowan.
"And why in the world would anybody wanna take pictures of 'em?
(The covered bridges.) They're just all fallin' down in bad shape." I grew up a few miles north of Madison County, Iowa, and never went to see the wooden bridges.

One thing that I noticed the author missed was I am sure that neighbors noticed Kincaid's pickup at the Johnson farm. In a rural community there are no secrets. There was no mention of him parking the truck out of sight. Someone must have seen it.

I think city slickers may have had trouble with this story, but we real people did not.

Don't Give Up On Waller After Reading This Book.
Okay, so maybe this Romance Novel slips over the edge of mushy sentimentalism. I read this years ago when it came out and promptly dismissed the writer. DON'T DO THIS. You will miss reading the thought-provoking insights and well-crafted writing of an author who possesses the story-telling skills and lyricism of Wallace Stegner. I urge you to read One Good Road is Enough (essays). One essay in this book is the best summary I've read on how to write well. Some of the later fiction is better than "Bridges". This is a gifted writer.
