Johnny Bull - An Englishwoman in America
This compelling 2-act play focuses on an Englishwoman who becomes pregnant by an American soldier, and then comes to live with him in America. Set in the late '50's in a small coal mining town in Pennsylvania, the main character soon realizes that this is not her "dream come true." She and her husband live with her Hungarian in-laws, and has a great deal of difficulty adjusting to this almost primitive way of life. Her sights are always set on California, which epitomizes for her the grand life. This play is not only a very human drama, a terrific characterization of a particular ethnic group, but it is also a slice of history, a way of life that was so very prevalent in the not-so-long ago. The characters are well done, and the stage directions and settings make this play very vivid to the reader. Reading this play is a must for lovers of history, and for those interested in finding out more about their ethnic backgrounds. My wish is to find a copy of the made-for-TV movie of this play.
