BABY SHOWER PRESENT
I HAVE GIVEN THIS BOOK TO NEW MOTHERS AT SEVERAL BABY SHOWERS. EVERY ONE OF THE NEW MOTHERS LOVED THE BOOK, AND FOUND IT VERY HELPFUL.

Excellent book for both new and experienced moms
I bought this book mainly because the "Six Week Nursing Diary with the Nurse and Track System" seemed like a simple way to keep track of my newborn's feeding habits. Having successfully nursed my first child, I wasn't looking for another "how to" book on breastfeeding. However I found the info in this book was presented very clearly and concisely and wished I had bought it before the birth of my 1st child. It covers all the breastfeeding basics thus making it a good "refresher guide" for experienced moms and a good "getting started guide" for new moms. Plus the nursing diary is wonderful! I recommend buying this book for your basic breastfeeding needs and buying a more complete reference book for info pertaining to specific problems that may arise.

An ideal gift and "must" reading for prospective mothers.
In Bon Appetit, Baby!, Elaine Moran has provided the new mother with a complete, reader friendly, breast feeding instruction guide in the form of a four-part book. Part 1 is "The Practical Breastfeeding Manual" which explains every aspect of breast feeding basics and helps new parents identify and appropriately manage early breast feeding difficulties and common newborn problems. Part 2 is "The Complete Nutrition and Weight Loss Guide" showing the nursing mother how to maintain her own good health and provide her baby with an optimal milk supply, while safely and naturally returning to her prepregnancy weight. Part 3 is "The Six-Week Nursing Diary with the Nurse-N-Track System", a two-part diary for easy monitoring of breast feeding progress during the first six weeks postpartum. Part 4 is "The New Mother's Journal" offering a place to record precious memories of the first days of motherhood with specific questions, ideas starters and inspirational quotations to inspire creative journal writing. Bon Appetit, Baby! is an ideal gift and "must" reading for anyone contemplating breast feeding their baby.

Poems for 9-year-olds and Under

Fun, laughter, nonsense.
No one should be put off by the title of this collection of poems. Kids many years beyond "9" will find much wonderful stuff here. And so will grown ups. Kit Wright, who's had the wisdom to include some of his own--and someof the book's best--poems, has provided a superb selection of poems that kids will love, and that parents will simply HAVE to read to them. There are lots of big names here (and maybe a surprise or two--who'd think of Mervyn Peake as having written stuff for children?) like Frost, cummings, Lear, for example. But some voices perhaps not so well known to North American ears--Spike Milligan, James Reeves, Gareth Owen,Kit Wright, for example. The poems are good poems in their own right. They know about the sounds that make kids laugh. They are intelligent because they know what children look at and think about. And there are one or two poems--like Gareth Owen's "Salford Road" that can remind a Mum or a Dad about the sweet sadness of remembering the child they used to be. This is a can't fail book for kids who like to read and for parents who like to read to them.

Lonely Planet Quechua: Phrasebook (Lonely Planet Language Survival Kit)

Not at all a necessity
Are you planning to adventure alone into the highlands of Peru? If not, and I wouldn't really recommend it anyway, then this book isn't for you. I recently spent three weeks in Peru visiting the Cusco, Ollyantaytambo, Sacred Valley, and Lake Titicaca areas and never needed it. Quechua is the language still used by the porters and residents of the highlands, but everyone else speaks Spanish. I was mislead by some travel guides to believe that Quechua was spoken in the main cities and that I'd need it to do pretty much anything. The reality is that you'll just need to speak Spanish or have a good Spanish phrasebook and on the off occasion that you have need to speak to someone who only speaks Quechua, you're more than likely to have a guide with you that can do just that.

That said, it is always interesting to be exposed to new languages and the historical culture of an area. Quechua is a language better understood through direct instruction with a guide rather than attempting to learn it from a text.

Easy to use, covers a lot of material, inexpensive
This easy-to-use reference shows how the words are built, with things like verb endings, infixes, suffixes. It's small, but it has a lot of useful material; for the price it's OUTSTANDING.

The SECOND edition is completely revised, by a different author (excellent teaching credentials), vastly more material -- both more gramatical info, and a wealth of additional vocabulary, plus there is also a Quechua-English section as well as English-Quechua, making it an even more valuable reference.

Some things are perhaps because Lonely Planet has standardized them -- I doubt you'll be asking anyone for a date in Quechua -- but it's still material to practice breaking apart the pieces.

I love the illustrations!

Good short introduction to Basic Quechua for Tourists
Teaches the phrases a tourist would use to travel in the Andes. You won't be able to carry on much of a conversation, But the natives will warm up to you for trying.

Sophia's Fortunetelling Kit
Published in Hardcover by Llewellyn Publications (1997)
Authors: Sophia and Beth Wright
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $25.00
Average review score:

Fairly Decent
This is a kit; it consists of a book on fortune-telling using playing cards, and it includes a specially drawn deck of "playing cards." I first got the book by itself two or three years ago, and I found it to be interesting and timely, as well as informative and overall nicely done. The book tells all about different layouts and spells that can be done with an ordinary deck of playing cards--which is what I originally used as a supplement. Later, I went back and bought this kit which includes Sophia's artist's cards. They are colorful and nicely drawn, but very small. I was used to tarot-sized cards, but these are the size of a smaller deck of regular playing cards.
