African Masks
This is the best book I have found on the psychology and understanding of African masks. Just fantastic, worth the money. 80% color plates, brief outline of basic African mask types and their interpretation, grouped by region and by style.

African Masks from the Barbier-Mueller Collection, Geneva
First-rate, high quality throughout, this volume does what a book of this type should do: packs in plenty of color plates of the masks, and shows them being worn (in black-and-white in situ photos) on the accompanying left-hand pages of the spreads. The collection is far-ranging and, though it cannot include every type of mask, it does manage to convey the incredible variety, richness and paradoxical sophistication of this art form. Highly recommended.

Wonderful!
This book has fantastic photos and information about the masks pictured. There are also archival photos of similar masks from earlier times. The most impressive part is the photos of the masks in use. I have often had trouble imagining how the masks were worn or used until this book. Not only are there photos of many of the masks in use the whole costume is also pictured. Truly one of the best books I've seen on the subject.

What a book!!!
An amazing book with great colorful pictures. It begins from how to prepare histologic sections to the description of the most important tissues, organs and systems of eight species (dog, cat, horse, cow, sheep, goat, pig, and chicken). Before the pictures, the book gives you a very useful and brief chapter introduction. It also has a detailed glossary containing nearly 750 words. A necesary book for a veterinary student. El mejor libro de histologia veterinaria que he visto!

an atlas with great pictures and concise text
This atlas provides wonderful full color pictures of cells and tissues from several animal groups. The pictures are logically grouped by tissue type with examples from different species being shown together. Many of the sections have brief, but useful introductions. All the pictures are well labeled and have a brief discription of important characteristics of the specific cells or tissue types presented.

It likely to be useful to individuals working in veterinary science, animal science or animal research.

I felt like I was there
I wanted to read this book because of the family connection I have with it. My gg-grandfather was a member of the West Virginia 8th Mounted Infantry. As I read the book I realized I couldn't put it down. As Averell rushed to escape to the North, his decision to burn the Island Ford Bridge, my heart began to sink. For I now know what my gg-grandfather must have felt like to know that he was part of the rear guard that was left behind on the wrong side of the river. If you want interesting reading of a little known event in the history of the Civil War, then this book is for you.

A well told tale of a little known Civil War episode.
I ordered this book hoping to learn more about my great-grandfather's regiment, which served under Averell in the Army of West Virginia. The excellent Order of Battle appendix told me right away that the 8th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry hadn't joined Averell's command by the time of this December 1863 raid, but that was my only disappointment. This is an easy reading, well documented story of a little known episode that shocked the Confederacy. More important, it is a gripping tale of men succeeding against the elements, and against overwhelming odds. Averell and his small brigade "marched, climbed, slid and swum" 355 miles through enemy held territory in the dead of winter, going without food and sleep, climbing mountains and crossing rivers, avoiding Confederates sent to intercept them, and striking the depot at Salem (today a suburb of Roanoke, Virginia) to threaten the lines of communication between Richmond and Knoxville. The book documents the extraordinary leadership and tenacity of Brigadier General William Averell, but it also highlights the streak of hesitancy that eventually caused Phil Sheridan to sack him during the Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1864 (in which my great-grandfather's regiment did take part). Abundant photographs and simple, readable maps complement the text and help bring the characters and the story to life. A truly good book, highly recommended for descendents of the Gray as well as the Blue, and for anyone else interested in the Civil War.

Watershed Restoration: Principles and Practices
Surprisingly readable text with up to date information that has been field tested from the fish labs and field to citizen action strategies. This is a must read for groups hoping to integrate quality sciece with quality social process strategies for watershed work.

Handbook for a new era of conservation!
As America comes to realize that many conservation policies of the past have done more harm than good, this book is a trail guide to the right path to walk. It addresses not only the need to work with whole ecosystems and watersheds, but to also include the human inhabitants of the area and their social ecology into the process. It points out that every environmental conflict has arisen from situations where the balance was tipped too far towards the people or too far towards the environment and it provides essential concepts to try to regain the balance. It also provides many case studies of the restoration of watersheds, to act as models in our own endeavors. I highly reccomend this book- it expands your thinking and gives you hints and ideas for ways to successfully walk the fine line between ecology and sociology.

After 13 years of teaching preschool, Angus Thought He Was Big is still one of my favorites! It is ideal for ages 2 to 4. Children can enjoy it first for the wonderful art, and as they get older they can enjoy exploring the concept of size.

a credible book to credit great artwork
I found this book ot be an excellent asset to my collection of modern british art. I thought that the large amount of content was covered thouroghly, but not drawn out to get stale(just like the artwork itself, discussed). This is a very important book because it recaps all of what is happening with the yBa movement in the artworld. This book is for anyone who wants to be on top of the world of modern art.

A Wonderful Book!
I read this book when I was 11, in Hebrew of all languages. My dad recommended it to me, but I couldn't get hold of a copy in English. So I started reading it in a language I could scarcely speak. It took me five minutes to stumble through each page, but the story was so gripping that I persevered. I found myself completely entangled in a new world, which I practically lived in for the two months it took me read the book. I laughed and cried and stayed up all night reading, and at one point I even had to stop reading for a week to get over something particularly terrible that happened. I don't have the words to describe the book properly - it is a mix of adventure, and love, and nature, and epic adventure, and a dash of spirituality, and some kind of quality x that makes it one of the most memorable books I have ever read... Anyway, I was overjoyed to learn that there are five more books about Duncton Wood, and I plan to read them all as soon as I can find English copies!

Everyone should read this profound bood!
As all the other reviews stated, this book changed my life. I have read all six in the series and each is as good as the next. I still have them all (gifts from friends overseas) and will read them again as soon as I can. I read Duncton Wood many years ago and still can picture the images in my mind that it conjured up! What an incredible story! Last I heard, William Horwood, was doing talks in England. Try and find the other books. If the first caught all your attention, the others will too.

A wonderful book - MUCH better than Watership Down
I remember reading this book over fifteen years ago, but (sorry to say) I could barely remember any of the details of the story. I could only remember that it was the story of two moles, Bracken and Rebecca, and how they brought peace, prosperity, and other assorted good things to their "system", as Horwood calls it - the title, Duncton Wood. The book has long been out of print in this country, so I despaired of ever getting my hands on a copy again.

Well, a few years ago, I was on vacation in England, and was very pleasantly surprised to discover that Duncton Wood was still in print there. Not only that, but it was the first book in a series about the moles of Duncton, and all of them (according to the local reviews) were just as good as the first! Sad to say, I didn't take the opportunity to buy those books then, but I recently managed to get my hands on a copy of Duncton Wood through one of Amazon's European competitors. I'm only halfway through it now, but it's just as good the second time around.

This is as basic a story as you can get about good vs. evil, and there are very few who tell it better than Horwood. There are definite religious elements in this story (and, I assume, in the sequels as well), but who cares when the story is written this well?

I look forward to finishing Duncton Wood, and to getting my hands on the sequels. Unfortunately, Amazon apparently only deals with American publishers, so they can't get their hands on any of them - so this is a very blunt hint to the American publishing establishment: get off your duffs and get the American publishing rights to these books! If the reviews here are any indication, you'll more than make your money back (and earn the grateful thanks of the American reading public besides)!

I loved these as a child and appreciate them as an adult
I recently re-read the entire Little House series. I remember watching the television series as I read the books the first time. I see things differently now, obviously as an adult. The hardships the pioneers endured to live as they wanted. We get upset if the electricity goes off for a few hours. The sheer struggle of life that these books portray touched me. I also admire Laura Ingalls Wilder for her memory. She wrote these books while in her sixties and seventies. I can hardly remember what I did last week. I will encourage my son to read these when he is old enough.

Little House In The Big Woods
I received my first Laura Ingalls Wilder book when I was nine years old, and went on to receive one each birthday and Christmas until I had the entire series. They transported me to a world few movies, t.v. shows (including the series!) ever went to...and I am still fasinated with this woman's life. I recommend it for all children and soon will start reading it to my three grandchildren, so their hearts and minds can come alive in a time and world they can only visit thru these wonderfull images of the author. This entire series is only rivaled by Louisa May Alcott...and these are easier for a child to read. Please enjoy the wanderings and hopes and dreams of the Ingalls as they moved thru the midwest...it's worth every moment you spend. The illustrations are so perfect...not glamorizing how Laura or the family looked... in a time before makeup and curling irons, when barefoot along the banks of plum creek was the best! ENJOY

A wonderful, sweet story of a family long ago.
As with all the Laura Ingalls Wilder stories, the deep love and rich feeling Laura herself felt and lived jumps comes across as a real, physical thing. I read one of these stories as a child. I remember liking it but I went back and read them recently as a mother. It gave me both a clear, real view of pioneer life. With both the hardships as well as the joys. As through all of the Little House stories, Laura's love and feeling for her family jumps from the pages. I could only wish that all books I read were so true and real.
