This is the classic orthopaedic pediatric text, with updates to reflect the latest advances. It's very easy to read and would be extremely helpful for a junior or senior resident on an orthopaedic pediatric rotation.

Analytical Reading Inventory
I have used every edition of the Analytical Reading Inventory, but this one is the best yet. Since I am a teacher educator, I find the accompanying audiotapes quite helpful--both to me and to my students. The content of the graded passages has always been real children's literature, and thus, more like real reading. There are both narrative and expository passages with different forms for pre-and post-assessments, or for comparing silent reading comprehension to oral reading comprehension. The directions for use are very reader-friendly. And, for this latest edition, the reader passages come in a separate booklet for easy use in the testing situation. I think anyone using this inventory would be well satisfied.

Daddy....
Cat Catledge is just beginning to come to terms with the murders of his wife and daughter when the phone rings. One word - "Daddy"- and then the phone is hung up. That phone call leads Cat and the readers on a journey through Colombia as Cat tries to find and rescue his daughter, Jinx.

Drug trafficers have fallen out of favor as the villians of choice in thriller fiction. This book, written in 1988, was written at the height of their popularity and is still a darn good read. Cat is a good hero - a rich computer printer inventor who has plenty of vulnerabilities (first and foremost his family). Woods provides an great group of friends to fill the gaps for Cat. I particularly liked Bluey, the renegade Australian pilot.

Since Jinx was kidnapped by pirates off the Colombian coast, much of the book takes place in that country. Woods does a nice job of telling the reader about the various cities without falling into the traveloge trap.

And, yes, the pages turn easily. A fun read for all (except, maybe, the fathers of beautiful eighteen year old daughters).

A True Page Turner
This book was my first Stuart Woods novel that I've read and I wasn't disappointed. The action starts off quickly and keeps you turning pages well into the night. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the crookedness of South America, the drug trade, action, and mystery. Definitely a quick read.

Stuart Woods- White Cargo
Stuart Woods 1988 novel "White Cargo" is an excellent read. A fast paced story that keeps the reader captivated, in my case I literally could not put this book down. This is the story of Wendell Catledge aka Cat a millionaire who made his money through invention of a printer. Catledge and his wife Katherine and daughter Jinx fall prey to what appears to be piracy while yachting on the coast of South America. Catledge wakes up in hospital to find his yacht has sunk and wife and daughter are dead. Catledge returns to the states and is contempating an end to his own life, when he recieves a phone call one day, and hears Jinx's voice. Catledge now has a new reason for living, to find his daughther and to avenge his wife's killers. Catledge begins a relentless search which will lead him deep into the Columbian Jungle. To say much more would be giving away a good story, one more thing I would like to say is I really liked the characters in this novel like Bluey Holland, Meg and even Prince a more sophisticated villian. "White Cargo" is an enthralling novel which will not disappoint, with a timless value to it, highly recommended.

It's so damn good!
I got Chiefs after reading all the Amazon 5-star reader reviews. Usually, I'd walk on by a book about small town Georgia cops, never imagining it could be this enthralling. The author is masterful at drawing the reader into this little world; I found myself talking out loud to the characters. He doesn't rely on the graphic gore and language of the typical modern shock thriller, hence making the terror more real. What makes the southern authors so good!? This belongs with "Gone With the Wind" and "The Prince of Tides." As a serial killer story, it belongs with the best of Lawrence Sanders.

A good crime novel plus a lot more
"Chiefs" is the story of three police chiefs in a small Georgia town: one was the town's very first Chief of Police in the 1920's, the second in the 1940's, and the third in the 1960's. The common thread among the three is a series of disappearances of teenage boys who were traveling through the vicinity of the town when they disappeared.

The book isn't really a mystery, since the reader knows the solution to the crime fairly early in the book. What sets the book apart is the well-drawn characters and the unerring and evocative portrayal of the evolution of a small Georgia town from the 1920's up to the middle of the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.

Woods has perfect pitch when it comes to dialogue. Every conversation, every confrontation, every characterization rings vividly true. Politics, on a local, state, and national level, is a sub-theme of the book, and the author has obviously done his homework on those topics as well. But the book's most noticeable strength is in its ability to transport the reader almost physically into a sultry Georgia town. Even if you read this during a winter in North Dakota, you'll feel the heat, the tension, the passion, and the fears of a sleepy Georgia town during the mid-20th century for as long as you're reading "Chiefs".

I could not rest until I had finished this book!
I had seen the tv mini-series several years ago and liked it very much. When I started reading Chiefs, parts of it came back to me (the mini-series was extremely similar) but I was still held in suspense. Once in a while a book comes along that I can't stop thinking about even when I'm not free to read--I can't wait to get back to it. This is one of those books. There are several characters and plots all leading into one major plot; yet, it never gets confusing or boring. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.

Mystery
Palindrome is a masterful novel that no reader will soon forget. Palindrome is an excellent piece of escape fiction by Stuart Woods. This exciting novel pulls the reader in with a fast-paced story that includes murder, mystery, and love. Stuart Woods provides the reader with sufficient information to keep the story interesting while still leaving the reader wanting to know more. He also does an excellent job of integrating the characters and plot with the physical setting to make a truly unique story. The setting for this book is a small island off the coast of Georgia. This is where our main character Liz Barwick has escaped from her potentially dangerous husband, pro football player Bake Ramsey. After Liz has settled down in her newborn house on Cumberland Island, her memories begin to fade, but soon two murders of her close friends send Liz into a panic, and she feels her husband is trying to find her. Soon she discovers that there is no place to hide, not even on an isolated island. This book is full of expense and action, but does not suppress a hard reading level or any deep thought. I recommend this book to the exuberant reader, one that is searching for apprehension.

The one to read
If you ever thought about reading a novel written by Stuart Woods and could only pick one, this is it. This was a great suspenseful, romantic and exciting book to read. The story is wonderfully crafted and I had a hard time putting it down. It is about Liz Barwick who has run away from an abusive marriage to a football star Bake Ramsey and is hiding for fear that he is coming after her to kill her. This is an amazing book and I would recommend it to anyone.

Palindrome
An entertaining murder mystery with a twist. Stuart Woods has evolved to an excellent murder story teller. His first book Chiefs and the two that followed the same family, Run Before the Wind and Grass Roots are also excellent. His very best book to date: New York Dead is by far the best murder mystery I have ever read

quite good
first stuart woods book i've read and it quite good. the plot is very addictive and easy to follow. its easy to read and although i noticed many flaws the book was nice.

I could NOT put it down!

I started this book at 9:00 last night and finished, exhausted, at 1:35 a.m.!

Maybe the plot was a bit contrived, but I couldn't help getting caught up in the web of the story...I kept thinking I'd quit after the next paragraph, but I kept reading until the final page.

I liked Jesse Warden and was rooting for him all the way....I liked the fact that Woods showed Warden -- warts and all. No, he wasn't perfect, and yes, he probably would have killed Baker, but I might have done the very same thing, had my life gone down the toilet like his!

I, too, would like to see the movie! I'll bet no one would leave the theatre until Jesse and Jenny and the kids were safe and sound!

I'm a Stuart Woods fan, but had missed this one. I'm sleepy at work today, but it was well worth it. Enjoy!

Great characters, fresh story, easy read
Most of the reviews covered say what I would. I will add that if you have read The Big Picture and liked it, you will enjoy this book. Both books have the same kind of flow and engaging characters.

OK...COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER....
I am not saying in the least that I did NOT like this book..in fact, I did. The problem was that I thought the plot to be way too unbeievable...and it really was not formed... I mean a town under a lake?!?!? To put it bluntly...it was weird!!! As a matter of fact, after reading this book, at first I was hesitant to read another one of Mr. Wood's books, but since I did not hate this book, I decided to give him another one of his books a try. Hopefully it works out....if not oh well...nothing lost...nothing gained.

Best Book I've Ever Read
I just finished the book five minutes ago. It combines mystery and horror into one of the scariest and most suspenseful books I've ever read. There are all sorts of unanticipated plot turns that surprised the hell out of me. Tfe most fascinating thing about the book is that the author, Stuart Woods, managed to put closure on all the sub-plots the book explored. It's a superb piece of literature.

This Book's Got Everything A Good Book Should Have!
This is the first Stuart Woods book I've read and I'm very pleased!! Under The Lake has it all, suspense, action, adventure, humor, and a little romance!!! This book is entertaining from beginning to end, with a big twist at the end that blew me away!!!!!! This is a book that I would recommend if you are a suspense/mystery/horror fan. You want be disappointed with this one!!!!

AN EDGE OF YOUR SEAT MYSTERY
I found New York Dead to be a very good and exciting book. I have read a few Stuart Woods books and have quite a few more to read. I have started my collection of Stuart Woods books and I am looking forward to reading much more. This book New York Dead had me on the edge of my seat all the time, especially when Herb was about to do stone in and then Dino at the last minute came to his rescue. I thought it was very freaky how when Stone came into the dining area and seen all of the corpses sitting at the table. I could only imagine the look on his face. I never expected that to happen. That is what I like about Stuart Woods books, just when you think you know what is going to happen, something else does. I stongly reccomend this book to everyone who likes mysteries. All Stuart Woods books are keepers.

Suspense on every page
I must confess! I did not even finish reading the book yet. I have read Stuart Woods a long time ago and decided to pick this one up because it is written about NYC and I live in NYC. I don't even want to finish it, that is how great it is. I feel every page, every chapter has a bang to it and never gets predictable. I hope the other books I just ordered are as well written and suspenseful as this one.

A Good Start For A Series
This book is Stuart Woods at his best. Woods does a fabulous job of creating the well rounded Stone Barrington character. This was not the first book I had read in the series, so it was interesting to see how Stone Barrington went from cop to lawyer. The plot line in the story is excellent and definitely keeps the pages turning. I had no idea what was going to happen at the end, and that is just the way I like it. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to start the next in the Stone Barrington series.

Stone Barrington wades into some pretty deep stuff!
Stuart Woods writes fast paced fiction and I really like his detective turned lawyer Stone Barrington. However, more than once during my quick read of 'Dead in the Wa;ter," Woods lost me. There are more plot twists and turns in this than a bad day at Wimbeldon. Ultimately, I liked the book, but I think he could have simplied the plot some...ex-wives, insurance investigators, a blood-thirsty Prime Minister, a dowdy old attorney, a bar-keep with his own secrets, a downed plane, reporters...well, you get the picture.

I hope Woods will trim down his character list for the next Barrington mystery, which, by the way, begins where 'Dead in the Water" ends.

A good summer read

Dead in the Water: Page-turner extraordinaire
Stuart Woods' novel Dead in the Water is a suspenseful tale of murder, romance, and deception. Woods has crafted a story that captures the reader's attention from the opening paragraph until the closing lines. Never is there a dull moment in this thriller. The reader follows the adventures of Stone Barrington, an ex-cop turned lawyer who is intriguing yet refreshingly real. Stone's tropical vacation is interrupted when he meets murder suspect Elizabeth Manning. Through his own good will, he decides to defend this mysterious beauty who stands to lose her life if found guilty. The case has a new twist at every corner, and somehow it never manages to get dull. The story rises to higher levels of suspense as Stone and his client become romantically and passionately involved. The characters develop nicely throughout the novel. As the story line progresses, the reader develops a seemingly intimate relationship with the novel's protagonists and exhibits genuine concern for their well-being. Woods should be commended for this stellar literary accomplishment. By constantly introducing new elements into the complexity of the plot, Woods manages to keep the reader guessing. In fact, the novel's outcome is not clear until the final pages; therefore, no reader can willingly put it down without finishing. The story's conclusion is slightly far-fetched but enjoyable and ironic nonetheless. Woods' endeavor is a page-turner extraordinaire and a treat for anyone lucky enough to pick it up. Dead in the Water receives four out of five stars. Highly recommended.

Dead In The Water but Not Dead Reading
This is the first book I have read by Mr. Woods. The plot combined with Mr. Woods writing style made for exciting reading. I found it extremely hard to put down. I often found myself feeling sorry for Allison and Stone as well as thinking "She Did It", only to find myself a few pages later thinking "She Didn't Do It". Later in the book I found myself thinking, "Insurance Scam". I won't spoil the book by telling you what happens or if she did or didn't do it. What I will tell you is that this is definatly a must read book with a fantastic ending. Being the first book I have ever read by Mr. Stuart I was plesantly surprised to find that there was nothing about this book I didn't like. Easy, smooth flowing reading. I will definatly be reading more of Stuart Woods writing. Even though this book is not listed as a legal thriller, I would rank it right up with authors suchs as John Grishim and Brad Meltzer's"Dead Even". Let me take a minute and reiterate that this is a great book and a must read for any avid reader.
