Good stuff......
I have read a lot of "vanilla" books on the Internet and technology. This is the first book with some excitement to it and some very interesting issues addressed by these CTOs. A great book for both techies and business executives....

Entertaining horror novel
Mick Winters returns home to settle the affairs of his late aunt and close up his childhood home. It has been years since he has visited the town or the old place and memories haunt him every where he goes. Especially disturbing are the childhood fears that begin to surface and take on a life of their own. Like the thing in the cellar, the giant spider in the culvert, the monster under the bed, and the evil in the town coal pit. Somehow these "old fears" are coming to life and feeding on the humans who invented them. And only one man knows the impossible truth as people begin to die at the hands of something evil...I read this years ago when it first came out and remembered it being pretty entertaining. I recently picked it back up and breezed through it in a few days. Recommended for horror fans who want a quick, entertaining read.

Old Fears scared me beyond belief.
The stories contained in this book stike on the fears of our childhoods. Some of the childhood fears that this book makes references to are things like being afraid of the dark, afraid of going into small spaces like a culvert at the end of the driveway, or being afraid something is under our beds.

My favorite story in particular is the one about the boy in his room in bed. He's speaking to the monster under his bed and is under the impression that if he's under the covers, he's safe. That was not a correct assumption on the boy's part.

I highly recommend this book, but only for those who have enough courage to withstand the fears that are so intensely described in this book. For those of you who do not like intense horror stories, I wouldn't read this one.

Greatest book that I have ever read.
I was walking through my highschool library one fateful afternoon about four years ago looking for my next book report book. When I saw the book sitting on the bottom shelf in the very corner. So I read the cover and decided to get it. The book took me a day to read. I never put it down I couldn't. It explains people's fears and then there fears coming to life to haunt the people that had them. Some even resulting in death. I have read many novels on many different subjects and this book is a fun read that will leave you thinking......I've been looking to find this book to buy it for my own collection but I can't seem to find it. So If you are lucky enough to find it, please read it. You will thank me for it. If you own it and you want to part with it E-mail me.

Sharp observer at work.
I have always admired Wolfe's ability to describe the social landscape in artful precision, and these essays (plus novella) are no exception. The parts I found most enjoyable were his takes on the evolutionary-biology-neurology rise, the bio of Silicon Valley's founder, and the fun he had with the New Yorker in his early days. One of the things that makes Wolfe great is his perpetual optimism and wonder about the new. I didn't care for the novella all that much (I'd already read it in Rolling Stone). It's a bit flat. Also the little essay about criticism and Updike, Mailer, and Irving was a bit disturbing. It seems to me that both camps are wrong: the modern novel should not be pigeon-holed; there are many different styles of writing a work of fiction and neither Wolfe or his critics have an appropriate stand to dictate otherwise.

Wolfe is the Mac-Daddy of American Greatness
If you love living in America, if you're thrilled by the raw courage of entrepeneurial effort that explodes into success, and if you refuse to accept the center-left line America's liberal elite wants to hand you, then Tom Wolfe is your go-to guy. He's hard-working, brilliant, and writes like a man playing a burning piano.

Although many know him best for his novels like "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "A Man in Full", you're missing his best work if you don't read the essay collections like "Hooking Up". In this volume, we get the true story behind the birth of Silicon Valley, a tale of a great artist no one knows because he possesses actual skill, a novella skewering the television news magazines, and several other gems.

If you have a Wolfe collection, add this book to it. If you don't have a Wolfe collection, start one!

Simply the best!
I first read a favorable review of this book in The Wall Street Journal so I bought it because I enjoyed Mr. Wolfe's other books. I then read a New York Times review which wasn't really a review but a political diatribe against the author.

After actually reading the book I find that his style and observations so compelling and interesting that I can't believe I was reading the same book as the Time's reviewer.

Mr. Wolfe's story about his run-in with Mailer, Updike and Irving is very funny and rings true. The sales numbers tell the story.

"The Invisible Artist" is another favorite.

I only wish Mr. Wolfe would write a piece about the election fiasco and split in the country.

I also wish he would write more material and more often as he is a national treasure.

His journalistic based style is similar to that of Neal Stephenson and Richard Dooling. I enjoy those books so much more than Updike's pondering himself.

Literature Disguised as Horror
John Wooley and Ron Wolfe have written a fine novel in Death's Door. It just happens to be a horror novel, and this might keep some people from reading it who should. This is a tightly plotted, character-driven story that should be threatening a best-seller list. Filled with strong, sometimes quirky characters, Death's Door blends normal and incredible, heart wrenching and terrifying into a wonderful package that pulls the reader into their very possible, very frightening world. The people will become very real to you; you'll love some and hate some; you'll laugh and cry. If I was still teaching American Literature, I would include Death's Door. You are going to love this book.
