Basic Pen Knife Carving With Tom Wolfe
I have been a sculptor in clay for many years and do casting of my work in pewter. Recently I decided to take up wood carving as well. The first Tom Wolfe book I read I borrowed from a friend. It was this book. It is easy to understand and Mr. Wolfe takes you thru each step. It was so helpful in learning to carve with pen knives I had to buy my own copy to keep as reference and will use it for many years to come. This is a wonderful book for beginners and great for long time carvers as a reference. He uses simple terms and easy to understand directions. The first carving I did following his direction is beautiful and sold for $90.00!

Excellent Step-by-step instructions.
The reason I really liked "Carving Bears and Bunnies" by Tom Wolfe, was the step-by-step instructions and color photographs. As a beginner they really helped me to get the proportions right on the carvings. I really enjoyed this book of Tom Wolfe's and I am hoping to get some other ones of his.

An intermediate level carving book with fanciful, fun santas
This book includes a pattern for a santa racoon with detailed steps as well as patterns for 6 other creatures. These patterns are cute, fun to carve, and of moderate difficulty level. The photography is extremely accurate in the instrucitonal seciton; the angels given make the designs easy to follow.

A great carving book!
I purchased this book about 8 years ago, and am just now getting around to actually doing the "primary" Santa depicted in it.
This is a great book for beginner to intermediate carvers. It's chock full of photos, and has the finished product depicted from several different angles......all at a great price, too! Buy this book!

Reality Check Clears the Bank
This book is real! Liberally sprinkled with first hand accounts of the men who were there it brings history to life. This book was given to me shortly after my father passed away by someone who knew he'd flown these missions in WWII. As I read, stories minimized by my father came to me in clearer, more heroic detail. (Not a member in the squadron whose story is told here, he was in a squadron in the same group.) A fun read that puts you there with the day to day doldrums and the excitement of missions as they were flown.

A book for the avid and serious Non-Fiction WWII reader
A highly detailed account of the little reported contribution of the men and airplanes which dropped or flew men into battle in WWII --Sometimes using nothing more than disposable wooden gliders -- a little reported feat of courage and daring -- sprinkled with doses of personal accounts of the real men and their real stories - It makes for a very good read.

Very good guide for the neophite wood hacker.
I liked this book. The quality of color and pictures guide you thru reasonable steps in making a wood face carving using a minimum of wood. Most books jump over steps and leave the reader wondering what should have been done in between. I have other of T Wolfes books and this is a better one in my opinion. A feature I would also like to see in his /any carving book would be more commentary on the use of 'grain' and how to get around the rough cuts that always deter from making a smooth carve.

The Confederate fighting man is the subject of these 11 very touching short stories written by the likes of F.Scott Fitzgerald and Thomas Wolfe. You don't have to be a Civil War fanatic or a Southerner to appreciate this book. You only have to love a well crafted story

These Caricatures are not Endearing!
Mr. Wolfe's caricatures are gross exaggerations of the human form and may not appeal to potential doll or figure sculpters. They are remarkable specifically because they are so grotesque! Mr. Wolfe does give several hints that would benefit dollmakers - create a concave hole in the end of an appropriately-sized dowel to sculpt eyeballs directly in the face clay, or to hold a separately created eyeball in position for adhering to the face clay. I'm glad I read through the book, but it's not one I intend to keep as reference material.
