stunning...
You won't be disappointed. Wolfe is a master, and these images are amazing. Great book, decent price.

Running with the Animals
This is positively one of the most amazing books I own. The photographs, color and clarity are remarkable -- Art Wolfe truly captures the spirit of Africa. As you flip through the pages, each image more stunning than the next, you begin to feel like you are IN Africa. A must for any safari adventurer, animal lover or anyone curious about the continent.

Highly recomended
Mr. Kowalski's book is excellent. If your're an animal lover or simply want a great read, you will enjoy this book. It's not just another man's opinion, but a well cited and researched work. Kowalski shows humans are not the only sentient beings on this planet.

For the first time in a long time, I wept as I read.
I stumbled upon this book on accident. As an animal lover, it looked appealing to me though I expected it to be a generic, feel-good read. I was quite surprised! When I read the information that Kowalski had compiled, I cried. The chapters explore our questions on just how perceptive and emotional animals are. Do they feel a sense of love? Are they aware of death? Why do they play? When I read the stories that the author relates, such as the family of elephants who buried the dead and Koko the female lowland gorilla who learned American Sign Language, I was deeply moved. I had not purchased this book planning a lifestyle change but that is precisely what happened. Knowing what I do now about the intelligence and passion of animals, I am a vegetarian, living a happier, healthier life.

Must Read
A very caring look at the the world we live in. A classic book on animal spirituality Gary regales us with tales of the lives of some of the creatures with which we share the planet. He ponders and causes us to stop and give thought as well on various qualities of animals. He details and presents instances of playfulness, capacity for love, altruism, and awareness of death, in our animal brethren. Gary is a Unitarian minister and in his book, he teaches us to be more open to the possibility of our biological, cerebral, and ethereal connection with animals

You Can Write a Cookbook (You Can Write It!)
Published in Paperback by Writers Digest Books (April, 1900)
Author: J. Kevin Wolfe
Amazon base price: $12.99
Average review score:

A Great Help!
What a great help this is! You Can Write A Cookbook is a resource for writers that can be utilized by many organizations. So often women's clubs and charities publish cookbooks with little to attract buyers. Using the suggestions in Wolfe's book can mean a real "Book" rather than just a collection of recipes. It offers the opportunity to present an appealing offering, likely to be in demand.

Great information
I have been considering writing a cookbook for a while. I read this book, and now believe I can do it.

Despite the fact that a lot of the information is common knowledge. I think I actually needed to read that I needed to, for example, index in a certain way.

The information on how to approach publishers is priceless.

If you are considering in writing your own cookbook, then pick up this book first. It is a must-have!

Fun, informative guide to cookbook writing
J. Kevin "Doc" Wolfe is the author of three cookbooks, host of a radio food show, and a lecturer and consultant on cooking.

Mr. Wolfe firmly believes that cookbook writing should be first-rate. It is a given, he says, that you must provide your audience with excellent recipes. But beyond that, what really makes a cookbook special is when you as author put "something of yourself in your recipes."

He has certainly followed his own advice in creating this how-to on cookbook writing. A breezy, personal tone spices up his writing, making this guide as entertaining as it is informative.

The following topics are covered thoroughly in You Can Write a Cookbook: the purpose of a cookbook, types of cookbooks, the ingredients of a good cookbook, how to write a recipe, finding a theme for your cookbook, organizing the recipes in your cookbook, creating an appealing layout for your cookbook, selling your book to a publisher, going the self-publishing route, and promoting your book. There is an excellent index and multiple appendices, including: recommended books, promotion, media etiquette, media connections, and a glossary of publishing terms.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever thought of writing a cookbook for any reason, whether as a fundraiser for your local church or civic group or with the hope of becoming the next Julia Child. Cooking hobbyists like myself, who gleefully putter about devising their own recipes, will find this book very useful, too. After reading Mr. Wolfe's advice, I have gotten a lot better about recording the exact measurements of the various ingredients of my grand experiments--a big help when you are trying to figure out what worked and what didn't in a new recipe. In addition, I believe this book will intrigue people who, though having no desire to write cookbook themselves, get a lot of pleasure out of reading and using them. They may be very interested to hear the many careful steps involved in the creation of their favorite cookbooks.

excellent reconstruction of a rambling life
very well put together biography based on a variety of sources. the authors present the myths and the 'facts' in a very cogent and objective manner allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. not only is leadbelly explored in detail, but this book also contains great descriptions of the places, times and character of leadbelly's world.

this book is also a nice read for those interested in john or alan lomax.

i only wish there had been more photos - but those that survive are accessible on-line.

Definitive and Informative
This is a fascinating biography of one of this century's truly seminal artists, from his days in the Shreveport red light district to his jail terms in Huntsville and Angola, LA., on through his "discovery" by John and Alan Lomax. The book is exhaustively researched and will delight both blues fans and history buffs.

A must have for music researchers
This well-written, well-researched book is THE source for Huddie Ledbetter/Leadbelly information.

Alaska as Art
Whether this book of color photographs accurately shows what Alaska really looks like, I don't know, because I haven't been there yet. But having finished it, I'm planning my trip!

But I can say this is a great book of photographs of nature. Anyone who loves to look at photographs will love this book. Wolfe demonstrates that he is one of the greatest living outdoor photographers. His sense of light and composition is unexcelled. Almost every picture has a strong sense of line, either vertical, horizontal or diagonal. And the range of light is exceptional, often including in the same picture the darkest blacks and the brightest whites.

The handling of sky is as sublime as that of any of the 19th century American landscape painters. I'm certain that there must be plain blue skies in Alaska but every one of Wolfe's skies has clouds that are fleecy, or glowering, or mysterious. And the light that falls on the landscapes illuminates them with a strange beauty whether casting deep, hard-edged shadows that make a rugged peak look even more majestic; or soft shadows that fall across a brush-covered hillside and create a subtle modulation of green; or the red rays of the magic hours of dawn and dusk.

Occasionally his pictures take on a strange abstraction that requires a careful examination to discover what one is looking at, like the pictures of white ice floes on the surface of an inky-black river or the network of crevasses on a glacier with a few spots of emerald blue in the white field, where the snow has melted into a pond reflecting the sky.

Wolfe is a master of color field photography. Consider the brownish, grayish web of fine lines with several smears of white across it that resolves into a portrait of musk oxen with white horns and muzzles. Or the white arctic foxes in the snow with a bare hint of orange on their undersides. Or the receding green hillsides distinguished only by differing textures with a tiny browsing caribou in the foreground.

The text by Nick Jans is sometimes overly poetic and almost unnecessary given the photographs although explaining just what it is that makes tundra tundra has some interest. However when I turn the page to see just the top halves of the heads of two fierce little owls peeking at me with yellow eyes hidden amongst a row of wildflowers in the Arctic Wild Life Refuge, words disappear from my mind.

Most people agree that Alaska is one of the last great wildernesses and that we are unlikely to see anything more exciting in our lives. Art Wolfe has captured the excitement of Alaska. He has also captured the excitement of great photography.

The Right Photographer For The Most Beautiful Place On Earth
WOW! Breathtaking photos of Alaska. He captures Alaska as it should be.

A keepsake memoir of the state's natural beauty.
Art Wolfe's beautiful photos and Nick Jans' reader-friendly text blend in a beautiful coffee-table paperback edition of Alaska (1-57061-216-1, $29.95), featuring gorgeous full-page color photos of environments and animals and reflecting the contributors' familiarity with Alaska's many faces. Choose this as a keepsake memoir of the state's natural beauty.

ENTERTAINING AND EDUCATIONAL
While alphabet books for children abound , a few are head and shoulders above the rest - C Is For Coyote is one such stand-out.

The book does focus on examples found in the southwestern part of our country, yet the information included is so fascinating and the photography so beautiful that it will appeal to youngsters all over America.

Each letter of the alphabet is accompanied not only by a first rate full color photo but also by a brief descriptive paragraph. For instance, "B is for Bobcat," which is where readers learn that bobcats live in rocky dens, are solitary, and like to hunt at night.

From the title "C is for Coyote" it is revealed that coyotes are "one of the most adaptable animals in the world.....Yip! Yip! Oo-oow! Known for their distinctive howl, some Native Americans call coyotes "songdogs" and interpret their howling to predict the weather."

And so it goes through "P is for Pueblo," which is Spanish for town, all the way to "Z is for Zion," one of our most outstanding National Parks.

What a treat to find a book that doesn't "talk down" to children, but entertains and educates.

- Gail Cooke

Filled with stunning photographs
Deftly produced by Andrea Helman, Art Wolfe and Gavriel Jecan, C Is For Coyote: A Southwest Alphabet Book is a gorgeously illustrated alphabet book for young readers ages 5 to 8, and filled with stunning photographs by Art Wolfe and Cavriel Jecan of the wildlife, environment, and landmarks of the American Southwest. Brief factoids about each creature or landmark make for engaging and educational reading. C For Coyote is very highly recommended for family, school, and community ABC book collections.

I love this alphabet book!!!!
I love this alphabet book and at age 47 (and counting) I hope I never lose my fascination with beautiful children's books. "C is for Coyote" boasts amazing animal and southwestern photography (photographers have worked for National Wildlife Federation, Smithsonian and National Geographic, to name a few). The beautiful photos are supported by informative and interesting text which will make you long to visit the locations. I truly do not want to pigeonhole this alphabet book only for children as it is a wonderfully simple geographical guide to the American southwest. Once you have opened this book you will want to make the pilgrimage to the four corners area. A fine book for young children learning their A, B, Cs and a real treat for the rest of us who, on occasion, like to revisit our A, B, C's.

Gorgeous photos and good, solid info on primates
Primarily a photography book, PRIMATES offers an intimate and often humorous (but not condescendingly so) look into wild primate life. Even the brief text, by Barbara Sleeper, is first-rate, revealing details about each species not often encountered by lay people. This is not meant to be a comprehensive text, however, but a celebration of some of our closest relatives. The photography is at times stunning, capturing intelligence, emotion, innovation, and above all personality. If you love primates, or are even vaguely attracted to their study, this is a must-have book.

This is by far the best primate book I have seen yet!
Filled with excellent photographs by Art Wolfe, this book shows more than 100 species of monkeys, apes, and lemurs. Seperated by geographical location and family, each specie represented has a short and comprehensible synopsis accompanying one or more beautiful photos. A great introductory book to the world of primates, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the field. Thomas R. Null, A Walk on the Wild Side: International Nature and Wildlife

A great introduction to the wonderful world of primates!
This book is suitable for all ages. I just loved Art Wolfe's photographs. With so much emphasis on "trendy" primate species like gorillas and chimpanzees, this book introduces readers to the dozens of primate species of which you may never have heard. Like the gibbons, the lesser and often forgotten apes - whose domestic lives are lived by the standards humans so often fail to meet (sexual equality, no color bars, paternal role in infant rearing, monogamy)! Plus tiny marmosets you can old in the palm of your hand. All these animals are there. I loved this book. It is not a comprehensive guide or identification manual like Noel Rowe's book which I also like. It is a pleasant and readable book! Great reference book
I have a 1997 version of this textbook. It is really wonderful for reference even after finishing the course that required it. My husband and son are using it also. It has answers in the back so you can check yourself. If you don't tear out the work sheets and just copy them, other members of you family or friends can use the book to improve their English also. It is really worth the money.

Good reference tool for any office
I am just completing a required class using this book. It takes you through our written English language by teaching how to identify each part of speech. This book also teaches correct punctuation, different kinds of phrases, and really makes you dig deep in your subconcious to remember nominative phrases, plurals, numbers used in sentences, etc... It's all the basic English in one book that a person needs for brushing up!

nice photo work BUT....
I liked the photography in this book but i can not believe how UNSHARP all the shots are. They are blown up way too much considering he works with 35mm equipment. The book layout is splendid but should be produced in half the dimensions of the current version. Best part is the distribution maps with the photos reduced and a brief write-up about the species and how the shots were taken.

amazing
I ordered this book from a book distributor that I deal with at the store where I work and when it came in, 2 of my co-workers were so impressed by it that they asked me to order one for each of them. This is an absolutely incredible book for wildlife enthusiasts. The photographers may be interested in reading Art's notes at the end of each section that often explain some techniques and gear used for the shots. This is a stunning addition to any coffee table top.

Magnificent Wildlife Photography!!!!!
Art Wolfe, perhaps the world's pre-eminent wildlife photographer, and my favorite photographer from any genre, has done it again. The "Living Wild" book is produced in wide format much like his Africa work. This production both shows off his wide angle photography, and creates a high-quality work that would make any coffee table or library proud. Wide-angle shots are combined with multi-image pages to create a portfolio that is at once balanced, and eye catching.

Wolfe has a stunning visual style - his animal shots appear to be more portraits than wildlife photography. I found myself wondering how he could have possibly captured some shots. Better still, he captures them in their habitats, combining landscape with flora and fauna as only he can. Animals from virtually every climate are featured: desert to temperate zone. For the true animal lover, he includes briefs on each animal species featured, much in the way most modern zoos do. These are combined with essays from respected zoologists like Jane Goodall.

The net effect? A beautiful, high-quality photographic collection, wrapped in an interesting and informative package. I recommend this highly to lovers of photography, animals, or show-off quality coffee table books.

Check out his other works as well. Stunning.

Simple and Honest
Eventhough I was not practicing Tai Chi when I read this book the very first time, I really enjoyed it. It looked so simple and honest to me. Now, I'm practicing this art and have read this book for the 3rd time. And I always find something new, something that I couldn't see before. I even read some chapters over and over again.
Perhaps its simplicity and informal style of writing makes it really easy to follow and enjoyable. I hope I won't forget the basic priciples by reading this book again and again.

5 Stars! - ALL THE WAY
This book is a truely inspiriing book, based on the life and teachings of the "Master of the 5 Excellences." This book gives you an insight on the details and philosophies required to develop your tai chi or other nei jia work. A required book by my shrfu (master teacher) when I learned from him and currently for my students.

Excellent! 5 Stars!

There are no secrets in this book.
Pull up your chair and sit comfortably back as Wolfe tells you of his experiences as a student of Cheng Man-Ch'Ing. That's how informal and easily read this book is. This book has lots of advice and applications for the subjects of Tai Chi Chuan, Push hands and internal energy told in an easy and relaxed manner. Students of Tai Chi Chuan and Push Hands will learn much in this book for their art and for life. Whether a "new" beginner or a "not so new" beginner this book is a must for anyone studying the subject.
