A Solid book about the Great War
Few books really have as much as this book has. You can read this book and you will know mostly everything about the Great War. There are chapters not just about war on the fronts but also about the civilians, the spies and the U-bouts.

This book does not take sides and in one of the chapters about the Soldiers of the war, it really makes you think. One of the great quotes from this book is: "Some should question not why these men fought but why they stayed" The book talks about the Generals and there foolish plans, the battles and the many, many lost lives.

If you go back even further this war was a continuation of the Fraco-Prussian war and why after the Allies won, Germany paid such a high price. It was to be such a mistake that because of that, people from the Right were able to take control of the country, the Nazis. This book deals with that as well and it's not a dry telling of the war but it has many details. It's not an easy read but if you apply yourself and are interested it you will come out knowing more, almost everything about the Great War.

My Cocoa Skin Coat
Kennedy's first book of poems for kids was a hilarious journey into pure nonsense, all done in deft rhyme and meter. Kids are sure to like the pure unsentimental whimsy of these imaginative rhymes and the absurd characters they conjure. There hasn't been such unabashed craziness since Dr. Seuss. Noted illustrator David McPhail (of "Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore" fame) adds finely wrought black-and-white pen drawings.

A long-winded poorly done overview of the war
This book was quite disappointing. Granted, I was not expecting to see a definitive history, but it seems every mediocre poet made it into the book. Yet Flanders Fieldsm arguably the most well-known poem, does not make the cut.

The book talks about a 19th century war with 20th century weapons but ignores discussing the weapons, poison gas, tanks, barbed wire, airplanes. Few maps either.

Very disappointing.

A disorganised discussion of WW 1
First and foremost, this is NOT a historical review of the facts and events surrounding WW 1. There is more attention given to poetry and art from the period than the actual conflict. The naval and air wars are barely mentioned. On the other hand, there are lots of great pictures and the stories themselves are interesting, if a little disorganised.

A New Look at an Important Turning Point
This book is a wonderful companion to the excellent PBS series of the same title. If you are looking for a book that tells stories of the all the military actions, this is probably not the book you want - Check out John Keegan's "The Face of Battle". This book (and the video series) tells the history from a more personal perspective through both famous and ordinary individuals and explains how one event has had profound impacts on the rest of the century. The reviewer who said this book focuses on Art and Poetry is correct. Winter, Blaggett and the others are trying to show the impact of war goes beyond politics and does not end with the signing of a treaty. It follows along the lines of work such as Paul Fussell "The Great War and Modern Memory" and Modris Eksteins "The Rites of Spring". The series is great classroom tool for introducing WWI to students from middle school through college and to explore topics beyond the destruction of Europe including the effects of mourning and memory, art and music in our 20th Century society.

Indian problems, greed and politics...
Early Colorado is the setting for this story about family, Indian problems, greed and politics. Janice has some excellent thoughts but the book seems to drag a bit. Apparently life in northwest Colorado was perilous and survival depended on God and family. This is one Christian Fiction series that shows promise.
