Product of the enviroment, I understand
The story as told, is great. But the end that is told, is just a beginning of what was yet to come. It has to still happen and will continue to be, I and we, are all products of our enviroment, it's just the way it should be (or the only way we know how it should be).

The Bataille Reader (Blackwell Readers)

Bataille le nouveau mystique!
The idea of editing a Bataille Reader in 320 pages might sound unthinkable to any French scholars of Bataille. Similar collection has never been appeared in France. The reason for such absence might be due to the complexity of the thought of Bataille and the voluminous nature of his writings. Once a devoted theology student, a libertine, a surrealist dissident, chief organizer for "College de Sociologie", founder of secret society "Acephale" and the most important French revue "Critique", Bataille has always been a figure of respect and controversy.

In the most literal sense, Bataille's writings are personal: the narrations (pornography, poems), philosophical discourses (Inner Experience, On Nietzsche) and interpretations (book review, art criticism) he put forward are originated from his intense desire to appropriate life's meaning/mystery. Interspersed over the pages in present Reader are principal leitmotivs of Bataille: laughter, death, chance, gift, transgressions etc. In these texts we shall never encounter the stiff coldness common to certain analytical philosophers. Bataille uplifts us from solid ground and force us to head for the furthest in our intellectual reserch. Sometimes, if not always, reading Bataille could be an unbearbale experience. Passages from "Madame Edwarda" in this Reader can be served as a test for your tolerance. To me it is the most important theological investigation ever written by Bataille - the prostitute as incarnation of divinity. After reading this text may be you would agree with Sartre in calling Bataille a "New Mystic". This Bataille Reader is indeed an ideal 'book of initiation' to Bataille - the most inspiring French thinker born a hundred and three years ago.

Afterall, I'm happy to place this excellent compendium next to the 12 yellow bricks (the French Gallimard edition of Oeuvres completes looks like bricks) already lying on my shelf.

Fred Small
Folksinger/songwriter Fred Small, former environmental lawyer with Ivy League credentials and now Unitarian minister, is creative, passionate, refreshing, versatile, eloquent, and lyrical. It's a treat to have all of his early songs in one place, and to read some biographical information on someone who truly has lived his beliefs and who has truly followed his heart. His songs of international peace, living simply, acceptance of others, child abuse, women's rights, the environment and endangered species, true love, and so much more, bring us insight into our lives, our relationship to others, and to this world and to this cosmos, and inspire us to fight the good fight, or to hold a dear one close, or to be open to one another's differences, or to protect and nurture a fragile Earth, or to simply listen .... (On a lighter note, my favorite song -- in this collection -- is about a moose in love, which, of course, being a Fred Small song, tells a story on a higher level as well.)

Great little book of tactics
About 300 tactics puzzles, divided into 20-question tests. According to the intro, the questions get progressively more difficult toward the end of each test (but I have taken only the first one, so I'm not sure whether the tests themselves get harder).

The difficulty seems to be around 1300-1700. There is a book by Lein (Sharpen Your Tactics) which has about the same range, but it gets progressively harder through the book. If you like to have a range of puzzles in one sitting--some warm-ups, some thinkers, and a couple of really tough ones--Reinfeld's book seems to fit the bill.

I would rather have the puzzles grouped according to difficultly, but I suppose that Reinfeld's grouping lets you gauge your own skill level more accurately.

These are combinations mainly, not checkmate puzzles. Reinfeld's How to Checkmate would be a good companion. And if you can find it (OOP) Chernev and Reinfeld's "Winning Chess" is, in my opinion, the very best way to learn the types of combinations to look for. (Seirawan's Winning Chess Tactics and Znosko's Art of Chess Combination are also good for that, though the latter is quite a bit more advanced.)

This book is nothing but diagrams for drilling. No explanations. And no hints! That's closer to real conditions than some puzzle books are. And as the puzzles are from real games, they are of course realistic, not contrived compositions.

The diagrams are very clear, not old-style--maybe a bit small, but only because the book's dimensions are small. At the bottom of the page is a little comment about the game, usually revealing nothing about the solution. This really does make each puzzle more interesting. The answers, at the end of each 20-puzzle section, are described in words as well as in algebraic notation, and that helps to make the book less dry as well.

New algebraic edition, thankfully. A 5-star book for the money.

An Eye-Opening Look at Amish Cooking
I fell in love with this book's whimsical title, and thoroughlyenjoyed it's content. The book begins with a lengthy introduction tothe Amish, describing their customs, history, and beliefs. This is not your typical cook book, as it is full of photos of people and scenes, instead of food! I have tried several of the recipes, and love the hearty down-home cooking of this culture. It is real life cooking. I was intrigued with recipes such as "Lima Beans with Sour Cream" and "Spiced Cabbage", which aren't typical recipes for the region I live! I was also amused with the recipe titled "Shipwreck" (a combination of ground beef, "leftover rice", tomato sauce, and other ingredients), and one called "Oatmeal Pie #2". If you are looking for a gourmet cookbook with fancy recipes, this is not the book for you (although you may be surprised at some of the unique recipes that are listed). However, if you want a great resource for real life cooking, with ingredients that you have in your own pantry, along with some interesting information on the Amish people, you will enjoy (and USE) this book!

Good demonstration of strategies
This may not be what you expect. It is actually a book of annotated games. The annotations are appropriate to early intermediate players -- not full of deep variations, but also not just some dumb comment on every move (which is especially annoying in the opening). It's more like every 3rd or 4th move. This is perfect for describing strategies concisely.

The strategies are practical, not deep. The games were carefully selected to illuminate basic principles. These are not "brilliancies" with sudden, crushing defeats based on deeply analyzed tactics. These show one player making stronger moves than his opponent -- stronger, but still understandable. I think the author has done a good job with his selection.

Each section does have about 2 pages of text describing the principles, but it's mainly a book to be used with a chess board. Play the moves and read the author's comments. Sometimes he points out the tactical threats (which are obvious to an advanced player) and that's where a board is useful.

I would recommend this book instead of Chernev's "Logical Chess Move by Move", unless you are truly a beginner (adult) hoping to get a feel for the drama in the struggles on the chessboard. (Chernev's book has far more diagrams per game too.) It is as instructive as Bronstein's highly praised annotations of the Zurich International, but at a much lower level.

USCF 1400-1700 rating.

4 stars as an inexpensive and comprehensibly annotated collection of elucidating games. But if you're on a budget, skip this book and buy one of Reinfeld's puzzle books.

Now reprinted in algebraic
This is indeed a clear, pithy middlegame book. But the one thing I have to add is that the Dover edition is a reprint and has been redone in *algebraic* notation.

Astonishing!
One of the best intermediate level books you will ever see. It is truly astonishing how lucid and poignant this book on chess strategy. If you like great chess writing (e.g. Silman, Purdy, Marovic, Romanovsky, etc.) you must have this book. It is perhaps the most important summary of chess strategy that I have (and I have all of them!)

worth getting !!! I just wish it were bigger
Like VARGAS Vignettes 1 and 2, I wish this was bigger. The book is small and that is the only reason it didn't get the full 5 stars. Although Vargas is my favorite artist, MacPherson is right up there too, and this book shows a lot of examples of his WWII era art. A lot of these pin-ups also appeared on the WWII bombers. There are about 30 works represented and they are all beautiful.

The book has a nice set-up as the pinups are printed nicely with good color reproduction. I use them as reference for painting nose art on A-2 flight jackets and the quality really allows me to get some really nice detail for my purposes.

At $10 it is worth getting but I would also recommend VARGA by Robothman which is a lot bigger format so it really allows you to fully appreciate the art with the bigger format. Also, check out THE GREAT AMERICAN PIN-UP as that has a lot of pin-up artists represented and shows the rich history of Pin-Up art

Great Book
The pin-ups of days gone-by, still retain their classy beauty, their timeless appeal. Any lover of pin-up art, any lover of the girl-next door female form, any lover of classy and beautiful art of the ladies, ought to seriously consider adding this book to their collection. A+

Another major book by Pin Up Art Specialist Max Allan Collin
Award winning Author Max Allan Collins is also one of the foremost collectors of original pin up art in the country. He combines his love of this media with the detailed research evident in his awardwinning Nate Heller and Eliot Ness historical novels to produce yet another outstanding pin up book similar to his award winning collaboration with artist Gil Elvgren's son Drake last year. Max comes to this project with the benefit also of having known Earl MacPherson in his final years of life. On top of all of this you get the high production quality known to most collector's press books. Highly recommended.

I bought this book for my 12 yr old & me
Everyone complains of not spending enough time with their children. We are constantly involved with electronic pursuits. For less than four dollars you can buy a passport to an hour of thoughtful pursuit and conversation with your child. Chess improves thought patterns and encourages long term thought. The book is easy to read, helpful, concise and you can buy the game of Chess on Amazon. Nuf said.

The perfect primer for the complete beginner
If you are a scholastic chess coach I highly recommend that you by a stack of these and give them to your kids. At this price anyone can afford to get a good start at chess!

A great beginner book and a quick refresher for others
This is an excellent beginner's book as well as a quick refresher for intermediate players. Fred Wilson poses and answers 101 questions ranging from "4. Is there a special way the board should be placed?" and "26. How does the knight move?" to "73. What exactly throws off beginners in the endgame?"

The book is only 76 pages and, as a Dover publication, costs about a dollar. I give one of these away to every friend and acquaintance I teach chess to, and so far I've always been thanked for it. Of course, I also keep one for myself, to help me remember the important points of endgames and what terms like "fianchetto" mean. Fred Wilson covers a great range of beginning chess topics in a very small and inexpensive volume. There's no reason not to buy a copy or two.
