Possibly the most moving book I've ever read.
What a privilege to read this intelligent, courageous young soldier's letters home. It is a rare opportunity to take a first hand look at the heart, soul and mind of the young American soldier during World War II. Historically, the letters validate American spirit, intelligence and valor. Bill Roger's letters are a national treasure. They are direct evidence of our national courage, honor, heart and hope. I wish every American had a copy of this very special book

"poignant story..."
"[This] poignant story is that of so many young men whose lives ended far too soon on a battlefield. Bill Rogers' letters capture the essence of World War II and the families who were caught up in it." Marilyn Grant--Montana the Magazine of Western History

"reflections of a time and experience"
"Rogers' letters and story are reflections of a time and experience...[he] was far more inquisitive, sensitive, and willing to share his thoughts and emotions than the average GI of World War II.... [The book] exhibits a freshness and honesty that are appealing...the work flows so nicely." Timothy K. Nenninger--Reviewer, University of Oklahoma Press

Makes complex theory understandable
I had the privilege of studying under Dr William Breit at Trinity University in San Antonio, and can attest to his skill in (and dedication to) taking abstruse economic thought and making it comprehensible to -- if not the layman -- at least the student with some grounding in economic principles.

(Dr Breit and his partner in crime Dr Kenneth Elzinga perform a similar service in the series of murder mysteries they penned under the name Marshall Jevons -- a pseudonym derived from the names of two of the economists profiled in 'The Academic Scribblers.')

Condensing the life work of major economists into articles of a few pages long necessarily involves leaving some things out and seriously compressing others. In spite of this, though, Breit and Ransom give us a comprehensive look at these men and their work -- enough to understand their place in the pantheon of economic thought. They also show how that thought has stood the test of time and the assaults of competing theories. And while the authors' editorializing is light, they are also willing to point out how these economic ideas have been employed in the political arena.

In all, a great textbook for an Intro to Economic Thought class, and a valuable tool for someone wishing to understand the paths the 'dismal science' has traveled over time.

Worth the weight to tote to class
For any undergraduate or layperson, the Academic Scribblers is the most lucid uncomplicated look at the work of 12 key economists. If you ever need a good guide to the subject of economics this is it.

The best gyn reference textbook
Very well written and practically laid out. Superior to Novak's, Kistner, or Danforth.

A truly comprehensive, clearly written gynecology text.
I found Comprehensive Gynecology to be the best text I have read in this field. It is clear and consise yet comprehensively summarizes the current literature on each topic. Each chapter begins with a glossary of terms and ends with an excellent point by point review of key concepts. The text covers basic sciences, comprehensive evaluation of the female, general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The chapters are well organized and include a synopsis of the current literature. I would recommend this text to anyone studing for fellowship exams. I have also read Copeland's Gynecology and in comparison found Comprehensive Gynecology to be superior in organization and readability.

A Great Book
This is a great book. It is not difficult to read. The style is very informal and at times actually humourous. It does not follow the definition-lemma-proof way of doing things at the expense of leaving simple definitions out, but these can be easily found somewhere else. The book contains an enormous amount of information, and the authors are clearly men of great knowledge and depth. The book is very nicely produced (from a 1st edition) by Cambridge U Press. Very clearly printed, and at a low price for the volume. I highly recommend both volumes to anyone who works in stochastic processes, or mathematical finance (assuming one wants to learn things, rather than just talk about them).

Excellent Treatment of Theory of Diffusion, Martingales, Ito
Although not an easy read, this book contains a wealth of information on diffusion, martingales and Ito calculus. Reading difficulty is comparable to Karatzas/Shreve. Mastery of topics included enables the reader to get understanding of most of the current research papers in this field.

Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

Christian Faith and Life (Treasures from the Spiritual Classics Series)
Published in Paperback by Morehouse Publishing (1982)
Authors: William Temple and Roger L. Roberts
Amazon base price: $2.95

A call to faithfulness
William Temple's 'Christian Faith and Life' is a collection of lectures that Temple, who made a career of being a bishop (and ultimately Archbishop of Canterbury, like his father before him) in the Church of England, delivered at Oxford in 1931. These lectures comprise an easily accessible, down-to-earth exposition of Temple's theology, which has had an enduring impact both on Anglican theology generally, and practical ecumenical theology more generally.

'The mind grows always by intercourse with a mind more mature than itself.'

Temple's writing has been instrumental in giving shape to Anglican theology, which, as the 'official church' of Britain and many parts of the British Empire, also influences the theological directions of many other denominations.

'The whole case of religion, through all ages, is that it is a venture, a quest of faith.' Temple argues that to have direct, concrete and verifiable certainty of the reality of God negates the spiritual merit of faith. Faith in an Ultimate Being, of ultimate good and compassion and mercy, is central to the Christian faith, and has parallels in most other religious constructs, even those officially or notionally polytheistic.

'Faith consists so far in the determination to live and to think as if this thing were true, and to find how far we can solve life's problems by the use of that hypothesis.' This becomes the essential question in practical theology. If there is a God (if we have faith that there is a God) what then must we do? The Christian answer to this is a surprising one, given the nature of God in the Christian concept.

'The Christian conception of God begins with an exaltation of the Divine Majesty, the greatest the mind can conceive, but when the greatness and the far-reaching power, might and authority of God exhibit themselves in man, it is by washing the disciples' feet.'

The fundamental call of God, for Temple's theological construct, is the call of service to our fellows. Temple was living and writing in the post-Victorian world, in which the comfortable stability of culture, society and morals had been shaken by the first World War and the quickening pace of technological advance, urbanisation, the beginnings of post-industrialism, and a reassertion of an accepted skepticism and diversity in most human endeavours. 'Nothing comes under this new criticism more fully than everything which might be regarded as a moral convention.'

Temple espouses a strong moral code that is rooted in eternal truths, one that is nonetheless flexible enough not to be dismissed and ignored by current culture.

Temple explores the role of the church, the role of sacraments and prayer, the relevance of common Christian symbols and the activity of the Holy Spirit in this short book of lectures. Clear and concise, practical and spiritual, this brief book outlines a compassionate and full theology that is as fresh and vital today as it was when first formulated in the inter-war period. High on practical application and usefulness, the scholar may find some rigour missing here. Temple, however, took his charge, as a cleric to be an educator, seriously, in this and other writings.

Pretty accessible
The parts of this book I've read have been clear and accessible for someone with an undergraduate degree in mathematics and some knowledge of stochastic processes. It doesn't needlessly multiply the jargon like some books, and it focuses mainly on the one-dimensional case so that the intuition isn't constantly obscured by matrix notation. Many subjects also have chatty introductions that offer intuition and a bit of relief from the hard work involved in learning this subject.

An original and one of the very best on negotiation
Almost everyone can benefit from improved negotiating skills. This 1981 classic, updated in 1991 with new material responding to questions from readers, continues to provide practical guidelines for executives dealing with each other, with superiors and staff, with customers, partners, suppliers, and government regulators. If you have ignored this as a pop book, take a good look at it. This practical, non-academic, and well-illustrated book does not waste the reader's time with filler. The authors explain the problems that arise from bargaining over positions, presenting an alternative approach. Their method revolves around four elements: Separate the people from the problem; focus on interests, not positions; invent options for mutual gain; and insist on using objective criteria. They offer helpful approaches for situations where the other side is more powerful, refuses to play, or uses dirty tricks. The range of situations in which their approach can be applied is almost limitless. Keep this one close at hand to refer to repeatedly until "principled negotiation" becomes ingrained and natural.

This book is the foundation for successful negotiations
I read this book in an MBA course for Dispute Mediation. Although it was not a required reading, every text and article mentioned this book. You can easily read it in a weekend. Do not expect theory, paradigm, or lofty descriptions-this is cut to the chase stuff that lets you know many techniques for negotiating and helping the other side make a decision that is right for all involved. Some helpful key concepts include elimintating emotions from the process, or dealing with the emotional techniques that the other side may use against you. It also describes BATNA, or the best alternatives to a negotiated agreement-those agreements which may be the most realistic and beneficial terms for both sides. I think that the other book, getting past no, by the same author, is an additional reference that anyone considerring this book should also read as an excellent complementary text to the principles outlined in this classic.

Essential reading
This is the first book I've read on the issue of negotiation. The book is easy to read, and the authors use good, solid examples to illustrate the techniques they are teaching. The end of the book, with it's summary review, really pulls it all together. The writing style is clean, clear, and simple, without being so simplistic as to seem unbelieveable.

The authors try to show readers how to remain objective in negotiations, rather than letting their emotions take control. The speak of being "soft on people and hard on principles", the idea of staying focussed on the problem and not attacking or blaming people. The parts I found most useful are the notions of focussing on interests rather than positions, and finding alternatives that will allow both parties in the negotiation to gain something. The idea of moving away from positions to finding the common ground of shared interests is one that is particularly useful in that it can be applied to any situation, be it a parent/child conflict, a work situation, or any negotiation. This concept shows readers how to focus on their long term goals rather than on being "right" and winning in the short term.

I have used the techniques in this book to great success many times, in a variety of areas in my life. They are easy to use, and they work! I highly reccommend this classic text to everyone.
