Night Wrestling: Struggle for Answers and Finding God
Leslie Winfield Williams is a very insightful author who shares her experiences with the reader, as well as, the wisdom she has gained through her walk with God. I found her book to be honest, again insightful, and an inspiration. I recommend "Night Wrestling" to any one who seeks encouragement in their life.

Powerful
This is one of the most powerful, thought-provoking books I've ever read. Leslie's honesty and vulnerability in sharing her own experiences draws you in and helps you see God's unfailing presence in the midst of all of our troubled times.

Easily read, spiritually moving, thought provoking
I had the good fortune of meeting the author prior to reading her book. She shares with the reader her personal / family tragedies, trials and tribulations in such a way that draws you in and makes you wonder how she has found the strength to continue. Her ability to convey that in many ways she is like the person reading her book.. i.e cooks ,cleans, does laundry, renews ones belief that we mere mortals can find the strength to receive Gods love and grace in every moment if we can open the door just a crack. And even if we don't open the door, His grace and love is ever present within each of us. God never gives up on us, unfortunately we cannot say the same about ourselves.

Lovely Book
I, too, checked this out of the library and tried the gingerbread recipe. Made it for the second time today for a family dinner and everyone raved about it. It is a lovely book full of comments about each recipe and wonderful illustrations. My 9 year old loved looking at it too. Can't wait to try more recipes...a good variety with old-fashioned sensibility.

Disappointed to find this is out of print!
I checked this book out of my local library and enjoyed it so much (Laura's gingerbread recipe is especially good) that I wanted to purchase a copy for my personal cookbook collection. I hope it is reprinted soon! Different from "The Little House Cookbook" in that these are not necessarily recipes from Laura's "Little House" books, but rather recipes from her personal cookbook she complied as an adult living in Mansfield, MO. This book is illustrated with beautiful color photos of Laura and Almanzo's home in Missouri (inside and out) and would be a great addition to my cookbook collection. The recipes themselves have a simple, country flair and appear to be easy to prepare (only tried a few but I do love to read cookbooks!)

Parents: Living with Teenagers / Teenagers: Living with Parents

Cuts To The Chase
Leslie Ann Williams' professional, straightforward, cut-the-crap honesty is balanced beautifully by her engaging wit and humor. It's just the right mix to encourage and nurture the necessary dialogue between the often warring factions of teenagers and their parents.

Williams' greatest strength may be in the seemingly effortless skill she exhibits in holding up the invaluable "mirror of recognition" for both parent and teenager as they assess the failure or success of particular strategies in their ongoing I'm-your-parent/I'm-no-longer-a-little-kid relationship.

Especially successful in guiding the reader to a humane and intelligent disarmament of the often volative parent/teenager disagreements, Williams supplies ample praise (and often gleeful conspiratorial advice) to both parents and their teens as they work to achieve a kind of detente in the arena dedicated to the art of parenting and growing up.

I can live with this book
I acquired this book recently on the recommendation of a friend. As both a parent and a public school teacher I thought it might prove interesting and useful, and indeed this is the case. The book is a quick read and to the point, making its case (so I would guess) in a fraction of the space other books on this topic take. Highly recommended for parents of teens and pre-teens, and for teens receptive to clear thinking in an informal and direct Q and A format.

Fine Book about Manhattan Project, Leadership and Groves
I've read two other seminal books on the Manhattan Project and General Leslie Groves: "Now It Can Be Told : The Story of the Manhattan Project" by Leslie R. Groves and the Pulitzer Prize winner "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" by Richard Rhodes. William Lawren's biography is a personal and intimate look at General Groves in ways lacking in these other two fine books. Groves is a master at sizing up people and situations, deciding on change, and finding the right people to put in charge. While Robert Oppenheimer may have been Groves' most conspicuous choice during the Manhattan Project, he made dozens of other quality people and organizational decisions and adjustments along the way. Groves' people moved at Internet speed before there was such a thing. He practiced high touch before there was email or cell phones. He anticipated cultural clashes especially between the command and control military and collegiate scientists, and dealt with it. Consequently, Groves' staff understood his expectation that the scientists' care and well being were their highest priority even though the scientists disdained their military sponsors.
Groves was not easily intimated or bamboozled by title or genius. In fact, he seemed to have the greatest respect for non-scientist engineers who got things done quickly, competently and with a practical efficiency. If the scientists had their way...and I respect them...nothing would have been built of any consequences. Groves recognized the need to bring in engineering talent early, even before the scientific solutions were determined. And he convinced DuPont and other engineering firms to take on this project despite the risks and unknowns.
I found this to be a great story of leadership and practical management. In fact Groves didn't even want the job and initially thought it had little chance for success. I came away enormously impressed by Groves' energy, determination and focus. Too bad this book is no longer in print...it beats 99% of the management books out there today. I bought it used through Amazon.

AN EDUCATOR MUST-HAVE!
This is not an in-depth review, more of a note of gratitude for a rich, EMPOWERING text. Dr. Yvonne De Gaetano is presently a professor and Head of the Graduate Bilingual Education Program at Hunter College of the City University of New York. Someone has to toot this woman's horn! I thank my lucky stars for having met her there as my professor in 1996. She became my most memorable teacher in all of my student career. De Gaetano is a fascinating educator, researcher, and writer. She writes from a vast background of experience and a seemingly interminable bank of knowledge. Kaleidoscope must be read by every educator who loves and is serious about their committment to teaching children. De Gaetano's book is deep, yet clear and to the point. It challenges everyone to a new beginning. Throw away those old, prejudiced notions! Teach your children tolerance and pride, teach them hope and teach them to succeed. I live by these teachings. The step-by-step way in which the author "walks" the reader's mind through all the necessary knowledge and action that leads to a successful multicultural curriculum is really worth 100 stars! Kaleidoscope should be subtitled: "The Official Guide to Multicultural Education."

Technical and Highly Readable
This book provides a unique balance of readability and technical information. I have trouble blindly following a books' "instructions for healing" until I understand the reasoning behind it. Vayda provides a brief, satifying technical explanation of each condition, possible causes, and non-detailed recommendations. For the impatient among us, this book is short and densly packed with information in an interesting and readable form.

Very Original!
With "Night and Day", John Leslie manages to combine the lives of a female MTV star, Ernest Hemingway, and Key West Private Eye Gideon Lowry. How Mr. Leslie does that task can be summed up in one simple word: TALENT.

This second book in the series is simply unbelievably good. I've reread it so many times I have had to buy a new copy for my bookshelf.
