100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon

The best hiking book I've ever owned...
Over the last several years, I've hiked most of the trails described in "100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon." Sullivan's diving directions, trail descriptions and maps have always been perfect and immensely helpful.

The trail descriptions are both concise and crystal clear. Sullivan does not meticulously describe each detail, which leaves much to discover on your own and allows for a more personal hiking experience. He writes eloquently, and often includes great tidbits of scientific and historical information that add context to your hike. For example, he might briefly describe how a specific area was geologically formed, and point out some evidence that you'll find along trail.

Sullivan's practical advice is invaluable. If he tells you that a trail passes poison oak, you better wear long pants! If he tells you that a trail is open from July to October, don't show up without snowshoes in March! Clearly, he knows these trails well. Readers should not overlook the preface, where he provides an equipment checklist, low impact camping guidelines, contacts for trail conditions, and other useful information.

The one downside of this guide is that so many people use it. If a hike is within an hour of Portland, and is featured in this book, you can count on a crowded trailhead on a nice weekend. Plenty of the featured hikes are off the beaten path, and still consistently provide solitude. Just plan on driving for awhile.

Anybody who hikes in Oregon should consult "100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon," or one of Sullivan's other books. I also frequently use his Oregon Coast and Central Oregon guides, and they too are first rate.

Just a quick additional note: When you do hike, always leave no trace! If you see trash, pick it up! Always be respectful of our Earth, and all of its creatures.

If you live in Portland, you should own this book
I bought this book two years ago to add to the many guide books in my library. After two years of hiking many weekends in northwestern OR and southwestern WA, it's become clear that this is the book that get's used the most. Most of the trails are suitable for the whole family. We've hiked into the crater of Mount St. Helens, eaten wild huckle berries in Indian Heaven Wilderness, hiked every slope of Mt. Hood, visited water falls in the Columbia river Gorge that we didn't know existed and more.

Many of the trails are suitable for the occasional dry weekend in the winter months as well. Sullivan provides many low elevation trails which extend the hiking season year round.

If you live in southwestern Washington or northwestern Oregon, you should own this book.

The Most Accurate Hiking Book Ever
I bought this book prior to a trip to Oregon in hopes of finding some beautiful hikes. This book was a valuable tool in my search. Every hike was accurately described from details on finding the trailhead to distances traveled including the level of difficulty and points of interest along the way.

Japanese Tales and Legends
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (1989)

Learn the Japanese culture through its legends
One of the most effective ways to learn about a society and the underlying culture is to read the folk tales, legends and nursery rhymes. In more repressive times, one of the few avenues available for criticizing the social and political structure were stories put forward as legends. The Mother Goose tales that now fill children with delight were originally published as satirical pieces, as were Gulliver's Travels and other magical adventures. Reading such stories is enjoyable, but read with the historical backdrop firmly in mind provides insight into how a modern society developed.
This book, taken from the racks of an elementary school library, is a collection of fascinating tales about ancient Japan. From the structure of the stories about fierce honor, pride and adventure, it is clear that they are centuries old. As befits an island nation constructed of mountains, most of the tales involve climbing mountains or sailing the seas. While there are some monsters and magic, many of the tales involve familial piety and loyalty. Some tales involve men of noble birth trying to win the hands of beautiful women, however the general theme is that the hand of a pure woman is won not by cheating, but by performing honorable deeds worthy of reward.
As a student of Asian cultures, I can see many of the aspects of modern Japan germinating in these stories. Personal honor and loyalty is strongly stressed, whether it be to a lord or another family member. Animals are described as having benevolent spirits, often rewarding humans who aid them in moments of distress.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have been conducting a search for similar books about Japanese tales and legends. When they get a little older, I will strongly encourage my children to read this and other related books.

This book is a must for those who collect or are interested in collecting Contemporary Jewelry as an Art form. Because Helen knows a number of the artists personnally, she is able to provide the reader with an in-depth perspective of the artists work and inspiration. While a fair number of the artists are european, Helen also focuses on American artists both established and up-and-coming. A definite read for Jewelry enthusiasts!!

Shakespeare At His Most Charming
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" is one of Shakespeare's most charming and intelligent comedies. Exploring with humour the theme of star-crossed lovers that he deals with tragically in "Romeo and Juliet," Shakespeare here takes three troubled relationships and has them intersect in the most amusing ways.

The impending nuptials of Theseus and Hippolyta set the background for the play, and are certainly the most distant, both from the immediate action, and in terms of romantic possibility. Theirs is a cool, rational relationship, seemingly devoid of passion. The already-married Oberon and Titania, king and queen of fairies, provide another marital backdrop. Both seem to be jealous of the other's chosen distractions, which deprive them of each other's company. Finally, the main action of the play concerns the love affair between Lysander and Hermia. Hermia's father, Egeus, wants his daughter to marry Demetrius, and does not approve of Lysander at all. Helena, Hermia's friend, is smitten with Demetrius, and so, the conflicts begin.

Oberon initiates the action of the play, goading his mischievous aid-de-camp, Puck, to stir up trouble with a love-inducing flower amongst both the human lovers and the fairy queen Titania. Foible and folly ensue when Puck starts into his work. Throw in some common craftsmen from Athens who are trying to put together a simple play for Theseus's wedding, and you have all the ingredients for enchantment.

In "A Midsummer Night's Dream," Shakespeare not only delves into the intricacies of human relationships on a romantic level, but also at the social, class, and interpersonal levels. He even critiques/celebrates the habits of his late 16th century audiences to intriguing effect. If you are tired of tragedy or think Shakespeare too distant or foreboding, pick up "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and you will find a solidly funny and endearing read.
