The Well, from which only the 'strong of heart' may drink.
Don't let the dismal fact that this book is twenty-zillionth on the bestseller list discourageth you.... it is well worth orderething.

I first came to this book through the published endorsement (hence, not personal) of the great C.S. Lewis, who made his first reading of the Well in November of 1914. He read it many times thereafter.

In my ONE reading of the two volumes, I can attest to the fact that this is a beautiful story, a rich fantasy, a vibrant fairy-tale with no fairies. Among other things... a love story. Strictly speaking, as regards genre, it is a "romance". The chivalric, bardic story of Ralph of Upmeads, the least likely of the King's four sons, who devotes his life to the quest of the Well at The World's End... a fabled well which promises to reward its discoverer with perpetual youth.

If you are in love with Tolkien's The Lord of The Rings (and who isn't) you should definitely consider having an affair with The Well At The World's End. Let me defuse the daunting issue of Morris's use of archaic language. Be ye warned, in every sentence you will constantly encounter words such as forsooth, hitherward, quoth, whither, rideth, erstwhile, deem, draweth, betwixt, and I wot not else. At first I thought this would be really intolerable. But I quickly adapted to it, and even found it kind of "not vile".

Remember... Volume 2 is essential. It's NOT a sequel, it's a conclusion. Get both volumes, and escape the world of car horns and remote control for a bit.

I applaud this new re-issue of what is definitely a fantasy classic. Previously, one had to search a hundred used-book stores to find it. Now it's a click away.

And as regards it's place on the bestseller list? I am reminded of the wise words of the great Henrik Ibsen, who once suggested that "the solid majority is always wrong."

Too Bad Few People Read It
I've been interested in the history of fantasy for a while, and I was definately intrigued when I happened upon this title. I immediately ordered it and read it. The Well at the World's End is marvelous. Every once in a while I start wanting to read a romance, and this is a good romance. The story is pretty original and was very different for its time. The story follows Ralph as he searches for the WELL AT THE WORLD'S END. He has enemies and intrigued galor to fight through. Along the way, there is also a love story, too.

The Well at the World's End is a good read even for modern readers. It is an excellent example of "romance." It is also good just as a curiosity read. Fans of Tolkien, Lewis, and Eliot should visit William Morris's writings. Personally, my favorite thing about the book was the archaic prose. For the first twenty pages I thought it would be bothersome. After that, I was used to it and the book flowed nicely. It is sad that few people read William Morris today.

Get this book back in print!!!!
I rank this book up there with the Gormenghast series and the Lord of the Rings. A fantasy masterpiece, it is the precursor for everything that came after. Yes, the archaic medieval language is tough to get into at first, but after ten or twenty pages it becomes natural to the mind and presents no problem. One sees that the language is part of the beauty. Overall, this book is like one of those medieval detailed tapestries, with kings, adventurers, knights and noble women trotting through forests toward distant castles. This is medieval romance at its finest, and because it dates from 1898, it is happily free of the Tolkien imitativeness that has so infected a large portion of modern fantasy. Forget Terry Brooks, read The Well At the World's End.

Wow!
I am currently transitioning from my previous career as an Army aviator flying helicopters to a career with the airlines. This book is a terrific aid in understanding the differences and realities of high speed and highly technical flight.

The systems and advanced avionics sections are phenomenal! They are generalized in order to apply to as many aircraft as possible, but really explain well how they operate and how you will interact with them.

My favorite part about the book is that the authors write it in an easy to understand manner. They do not write in an overly complicated technical manner, but rather at a level that a new or transitioning professional pilot can understand. They don't baby talk to you either. It's just right.

Big Kudos and a must buy!!

A "must buy" book for early professional pilots
This book is the consumate soup of all of the most important things you need to know before you go into ground school at a regional or major airline.

It was written by airline pilots who still remember how overwhelmed they were when they sat through their first aircraft systems ground school at their respective airlines.

I consider it mandatory reading before you consider setting foot in a flight simulator or airline ground school.

Bravo!

Excellent manual on turbine technology
This manual gives me a general idea on how an aircraft turbine engine operates. This book is for any teens who want to be a turbine engineer. There are no complex technical drawings or discussions in this book, therefore it's a nice book for begineers.

There's no excuse not to buy this book!
I agree with Bill Murray (in the Editorial Reviews section) that not enough people will read this book. It is priced moderately enough that there should be no excuse for any collector not to buy one. As one who collects both coins and banknotes, I find very often too much emphasis is given to coins; very little to banknotes. Fortunately, the book does not omit banknotes. (Just a prejudice of mine!).

Numismatic Book of the Year
My name is Lee Martin and I am the founder of the Numismatic Literary Guild. I have been privileged to review many books and usually they are most satisfactory, however few are regarded by me as N.L.G. Book of the Year material. This book, in my view, merits that thought. It is for everyone in numismatics and is even a "must have" for those who may become heirs, but lack the know-how of what to do next. Senior citizens, like myself, will be especially happy with the interesting stories of estates, etc. I had intended to just scan the book but it was so interesting I stayed with it until I had read it all. EVERYONE should own it if coins are involved in their activities. I highly recommend this book and wish to congratulate all involved in its production.

Must Reading for every collector!!
A wealth of sound and practical information, written in a clear and concise manner. Leroy Van Allen, numismatic author

Crafty Guide to Analyzing Arguments
A superb addition to the rapidly expanding "informal logic" textbook market. The book tries to familiarize the reader with a (rather original) interpretation of the so-called "Toulmin scheme" for analyzing arguments and combines this approach with a judicious dose of advice on "how to write arguments gracefully," the latter echoing Joseph Williams's well-known textbook (Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace). I liked in particular the book's easygoing tone (people writing on argumentation often come across as rather highbrow) and the excellent selection of readings. If this kind of stuff interests you, this book, perhaps combined with David Zarefsky's recently released (Teaching Company) course on "Argument: The Study of Effective Reasoning," could put you in the fast lane.

A stirring call to faithfulness in the new millennium
The author is a clergyman in Portland, Maine who writes in his preciously few spare hours. This one is a winner. It is a superlative study, and will no doubt change lives. The incisive analysis of what it is to be a faithful churchgoer in a turbulent time in world history is, without any doubt from any source that could be mentioned, other than the obvious ones that any reviewer would have in mind, provided that reviewer were theologically trained in one of the mainline institutions, such as Union, Devoeux, or Sibley, were not such pillars of sanctity and ceremony as the Western institutions, in any event never ceased to be. No more really need be said. First-rate.

A look at the Rodney King Riots from the streets
I read this book a few years ago after hearing radio personality Dennis Prager recommend it. It is a very worthwhile read. Williams chronicles his upbringing in the midwest and how it differed from most of his friends (piano practice while the others played in the street). He also gives an intimate look at how valuable that upbringing was to him as an adult (childhood friends in prison while he was trying to make it in the entertainment field). This introduction gives a good background for the frustration and shock at what followed the Rodney King verdict in 1992 when the news hit the streets. These emotions prompted Williams to run out of him home (in the area of the riots) in an effort to try to do something positive in the middle of the chaos. This sets up the story of how Williams rescued a Japanese man from attackers during the riots, and the publicity the act inspired. Although this act was only a minor news story in the larger story of the riots, it is just as large a human story. It is very thought provoking and makes for an interesting and quick read. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a first person look at the riots. My wife used it as one of many sources for a college term paper on the riots.

BEST MACROECONOMICS TEXTBOOK AVAILABLE
Among all the textbooks I have seen in economics, I have found Mankiw's to be the best. It is clear and concise, addressing all the important intermediate issues in macroeconomics. The description of concepts is simple, and the book benefits from a three pronged approach to teaching - graphical, mathematical, and anecdotal. The student is free to choose whichever one he feels most comfortable learning from.

The best intermediate macro book
As an instructor of introductory macroeconomics, I often rue the fact that we do not utilize this textbook. I borrow material from it INCESSANTLY and without shame.

It presents the "Keynesian" viewpoint on macroeconomics in an extraordinarily clear and interesting fashion. Frankly, I consider the introductory (read literally - first semester macro books) texts to be a waste of time. There is absolutely no reason this textbook should not be used for a first semester macroeconomics course (assuming one has already taken an introductory microeconomics course).

Suggested plan of study for those interested in a fairly serious study of macroeconomics (without an INSANE amount of mathematical preparation): this book and Barro's book with the same title. Barro's book presents the real business cycle theory approach in a clear manner (though the book is somewhat dull in comparison)...then decide for yourself which 'camp' is making the most sense.

Best textbook I have EVER read
I have read at least one hundred textbooks for my undergraduate and graduate courses and this book is the BEST text book I have ever read. In general, I never liked economics, but this book made me think, understand, and like economics. The true triumph of this book is its simplication. Instead of explaining the details of Macroeconomics (which most econ textbooks tries to do) the author brilliantly pulls the reader into thinking about economics in more detail than what the book presents. Makiew is not only a consummate economist, but he is a consummate writer as well.
