A Low Country History of South Carolina
A great review of South Carolina Low Country history through the trials and tribulations of some of its founding families. A great find for historians of the Low Country. All kinds of primary source documents and personal information of South Carolina residents over a three hundred year time span. Plantation owners, battles, sea captains, soldiers, generals, rebels, loyalists, colonists, farmers, doctors, disease, family squabbles, slaves, cities and towns are brought to life through the words of people who were actually there. Geography, climate, agriculture, economy, politics, it's all here. A gold mine for geneologists. Histories traced back to the kings and queens of England. Well indexed and referenced. A gem!

The Definitive Resource for the PBY
The author, Captain W.E. Scarborough is a retired naval aviator with 1700 hours of PBY flight time. The book is an 11-by-8.25 inch 50-page paperback filled with photos, plan drawings, and detailed descriptions of the many variants of the Catalina flying boat, along with historical notes on their development, usage, and combat records. It's an excellent resource for the study and appreciation of the PBY, written first-hand by one of its pilots.

A good forum for new writers
This short story collection is a worthwhile read, and I will be looking up some of the authors featured. In particular, Andrew Sean Greer's story is heartbreaking; William J. Cyr's story has an interesting conversational, matter-of-fact tone; and the curiously named author "wormser" has a short but sweet entry. The best part of this collection, for me, is the interview with author Richard Bausch. I found it thoroughly inspiring, as it touches upon such problems as writer's block and having the confidence and determination to live a writer's life. The best part about Glimmer Train collections as a whole is that they give unpublished writers their first break, in addition to publishing established writers. More literary magazines of this caliber and spirit of inclusiveness are sorely needed!

Talented new authors
This is an enjoyable collection of short stories; although, as with other collections, there are a couple of weak links in the chain. Nevertheless, it's worth buying for Andrew Greer's story alone. Others are also quite good, such as Karen Outen's fictional debate on whether to have a baby, Wormser's story about a childhood friend, and William Cyr's original and witty (and, at the same time, chilling) story of a bad stepfather. I also enjoyed the whole presentation--with baby photos of the authors (as well as current shots) and their personal comments. Established author Richard Bausch talks about writing, racism, and life in general in an engaging interview. Definitely worth a read!

This book lives up to its title, and stops there.
If you are looking for a book on OS design, this is most certainly not the one. However, this book may come in handy for UNIX-like system implementors on the Intel architecture. Despite what the introduction of the book reads, this is mostly just source code, and few comments, most of which I would expect to see /* */ around -- no incredible insight here. The only real reasons one might get this book is if one is a *BSD fan or if one is implementing an OS on the Intel architecture and is looking for ways other people have resolved related issues.

Interesting
This was an interesting book. Its hard to know exactly what this book is trying to be. Is it trying to be like the Lions Commentary? nope.. since its not complete source code...

Basically they give you most of the core kernel functions etc, locore.s, and give you the design decisions, whys and hows.

I found it to be done pretty well, and it made a good reference, but one needs to remember the time in which 386BSD was written in.

Overall, a good book for any unix coder os design person.

A book filling a long-empty niche
This is a very nice book filling a long-empty niche: the low-level description of the logic and algorithms of an operating system. Probably the Lions' book was the last widely known good example of this kind. Well, 386BSD is dead but FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD are its direct descendants. And although they have diverged they still have a lot in common with 386BSD. The older versions of them are very close to 386BSD and still can be downloaded for free. It's not a general book on the principles of the OSes. It's not a high-level description of abstract Unix. It's a down-to-the-Earth discussion of the routines in the BSD kernel and the explanation of the design decisions in its base. It hits the information vacuum between the high-level descriptions, such as Vahalia's and McKusick et al. books and the raw source code. If you ever read the BSD source code and wondered what does such-and-such function do and when is it used and why does it do it in this way but not in some another way and how is it connected to the high-level picture then this is a just right book for you. But it's not an introductory reading, before reading it better get the general picture of what's going on in there from the McKusick's and Vahalia's books.

How Germaine Greer came to be an authority on Shakespeare, I'll never know. Actually, I can't believe people are still writing about this guy at all.
