Dodson history and genealogy
This book is very accurate and shows many examples for proof of statements. The authors didnot jump to conclusions for the sake of links to famous people or events. I found this to be a great guide for the novice researcher because it emphisises caution on assumptions. Tells you straight out if there wasn't enough proof for them to be positive but listed the information in case proof comes later It is easy to read and follow though the many generations. There are enough interesting tales, writings, wills etc to cause you to forget your original purpose and to begin to read as if it were a history book. Which may or maynot be a good thing.

The problem I see as the owner of both books Volumn 1 and 2 is that the index is in the 2nd book and you seem to be offering only the 1st book and this will leave researchers lost who don't know who is in which geneation, exact dates of birth, locations and which given name applies to your relative (some of which are repeated by every sibling in the family when naming their own children and on and on for generations). I suggest you make the 2nd book available to your customers too. It contains wills, property titles, lots of later date relatives witness to legal events and much more. The 2 books are of equal value to a genealogy researcher.

One of the best UNIX books ever written.
This is one of the best UNIX books ever written. Period. It's too bad that New Riders never bothered to update it, as it is kind of dated nowadays. It is still very useful, and not a waste by any means, but an update would be nice. It hits on every major aspect of UNIX and has examples. I have found things in there that I didn't find even in the Nemeth books. This belongs on every UNIX Sysadmin's bookshelf. The next time I ask for some Unix and tech books at work, I will see if this or other used copies are still available and try to get them to buy it. I don't want to take mine to work because I don't want to damage it, and because it is just too big and bulky to carry back and forth.

Oh, and you have to love that cover art.....

A definitive depiction of the life and times of G. Maciunas
Emmett William's Mr Fluxus is a collective portrait of the founder of the Fluxus group. Maciunas was a typographer, visual designer, teacher and organizer. He was a constant source of ideas, and worked tirelessly to produce them. At various times now famous artists such as Beuyes, Ono and Paik joined a loose band of others. They participated in FluxFests, produced FluxGames and objects and sold them in FluxShops. His FluxHouses were among the seeds of today's SOHO. Among the ironies of his life , is that many of his ideas have led to financial success for others, while he lived a spartan life and suffered financial disasters. The book is a collective of anonymous quotes as Fluxus was a collective. The quotes are attributed at the end, but the form si sometimes confusing. Williams and Ay-O have produced a valuable document for scholars and art lovers. They had the advantage of being insiders with access to many who might not choose to cooperate, and to know many others who might be too obscure. They also spoke to artists while they were still alive about Fluxus. Al Hansen, Dick Higgins, Peter Moore and Dieter Roth are no longer available to us. The book presents George Maciunas in all of his complexity. Fluxus has had a role in the genesis of Performance art and Conceptual art. This book will help us remember him in his context.

Concrete poetry at its most accessible and intelligent
I love this book! Emmett Williams takes a very basic building block (the letters in the word "sweethearts") and uses them to tell the tale of a romance in progress. It's a very smart book that will open your eyes to new possibilities in narrative.

Please note: This book is for people who are open-minded about literature. Not for someone who's looking for a typical sort of reading experience.

Lets me wonder how Dennis Maione would write this book
This book may be an adaquate study guide for preparing for Exam 70-068, but I don't think it's an excellent one. You'd need use Exam Cram or Transcender exams to get an idea of how the questions would look like in the real test because the Exam Questions at the end of each chapter in this book are too weak and too few.

The contents are not very well organized and some errors are presented in an authorative tone that they are not easy to spot if you don't try it out. Try its comments on the "Forcibly disconnnect remote users ..." option in Account Policy.

I read Sybex (stay away from them) and Dennis Maione's books on Server and Workstation as supplements to Microsoft ILT. Maione's books are an excellent source for a comprehensive knowledge of NT (not just for the sake of passing the test). Though suffering from the same type of Exam Questions, they are very insightful and tell more about "why" rather than "just-do-this-and-don't-ask-why" (which is the impression I got from the labs in MS MOC). In contrast, the chapter on network monitoring in this book is just like repeating what Microsoft says in its Training Kit on the subject (and without the sample exercises in Training Kit). The author's lack of insights, or unwillingness to share them, on the subject are shown in the absence of those Exam Tip and Warning boxes in the margin. However, at least, this is the only study guide I used that covers the subject, which is not a favorite of the real exam but is something that you could be tested on. I had a question on analyzing a sample frame in the real exam.

One reason I use the study guides is to see what insights an author can share with you drawing on his/her experience and expertise and to obtain a perspective different from Microsoft. I don't benefit much this way from this book, although it does cover what you need to study for the exam.

Solid Study Guide for NT Server 4.0 Enterprise
Just finished prepping for the NT Server 4.0 Exam using this book as the main study guide. Very well laid out with good use of text/colors, very typical of the New Riders Next Generation Study guides. Exam covers a VERY broad range of info and the book does a good job of covering it all. The author is very knowledgable and brings his practical experience to the book. My only complaint is the low number of study questions in each chapter. Recommend adding the Exam Cram book for those study questions. Also would not recommend the MS Press study kits, they are not worth the $$$ (unless you need the 30 day eval. software) and it helps to have a non-Microsoft point of view...

Excellent study guide
This book is well written, making it easy to read and understand. The content layout is also well done, making it easy to see exactly what is required to know for each exam objective. There is some small detailed information missing but I found that the practice tests identified this information to you anyway, so overall the content is adequate (the Sybex books I'm using, also have information missing). I did notice questions in the real exam relating to previous exams, so I would recommend doing the subjects in the following order: Networking Essentials, NT Workstation4, NT Server4, NT Server4:Enterprise. I found the practice exams to be an invaluable aid for studying for the exam and they are similar to the real exam. I used the Sybex books for my elective subjects, and found them to be very poorly written. The Sybex books were not easy to read and understand and the content was layed out in a poor way, making them hard to identify information for each exam objective.

Thermodynamics and the Development of Order

A very good and thorough (not to mention technical) analysis
The concept of Thermodynamics and its relation to the creation and evolution controversy will likely to go on and be debated among creationists and evolutionists forever. In fact, this book outlines both view on the matter and makes a convincing case that the science of thermodynamics poses a serious problem and stumbling block for the theory of evolution. The evolutionists always insist that the creationists "don't give you the whole story!" Well, this book gave me the impression that the evolutionists don't quite give you the whole story either! Read this book and see why the theory of evolution violates the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. If you're an evolutionist, I would still recommend it too you, that is if there are any open-minded ones out there. All in all, a very good and scientific book! Highly recommended!

The problem is CIW. Forget the books and go with examprep
The problem I have with CIW is the certification itself was not developed based on industry standards for professionalism. The courseware is a poor way to prepare for the exam since the mapping is poor. This book is similar to the courseware. The CIW examcram is probably the best. If you want to pass the exam spend your money on the exam prep software which does a better job of covering exam items. I've used MeasureUp and it was quite good

just as bad as the courseware
I'm a CIW instructor. I've been using Prosoft courseware in my classes for two years, and have never been pleased with it -- especially the Foundations courseware. This book is written by the same people and it's just as bad. Dry as a bone and full of inane information that none of my students have ever been asked on an exam. This biggest challenge on the Foundations exam for most of my students is the Networking Fundamentals portion and while this book does cover the needed material, it doesn't do a very good job of breaking down some of the most complicated concepts -- such as the OSI model. I encourage my students to get supplemental materials that enhance the material covered in the courseware -- not rehash it.

Good book for the test
I found this to be a good book to work with for the CIW Foundations exam. I used this book and the dummies book on the same subject. I purchased this book based on a friend's recommendation of Sybex and my using their book for my Network + exam last year.

This book filled out the information I had read in the dummies book in a well written, understandable format. The sample tests on the CD are mostly the questions from the book, but like all sybex titles I have seen, the 2 CD only tests were a good challenge to see exactly how much I really did understand.

If you are thinking of taking the CIW test, this is a good book to use as a resource.

The Impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton: A Political Docu-Drama

blah
I don't even know what Bob Barr's contribution to this piece of trash was - considering he's a racist, lying, philandering little midget who is one of the biggest hypocrites around. and he's probably illiterate too!

An Exercise in Wishful Thinking
As a gigantic scoresheet on Bill Clinton's abuses of power and why people at least _ought to_ care about them, this book is right on target. But as a valid predictor of the future or a handbook for practical action, this book does not qualify. And as a novel, _Huckleberry Finn_ it isn't. It is, in the end, wishful thinking.

Tyrrell's major handicap is that he is trying to move from the realm of journalistic editorship to the realm of novel-writing, and simply doesn't have the skills for it. Simply put, Mark Twain he isn't. When I read a novel, I expect an in-depth study of the characters and the situation. I expect to be told not just _what_ the characters do, but _why_ they do it. And the "why" inevitably goes much deeper than "that Bill Clinton may be a scumbag, but he's _our_ scumbag," and is definitely more complicated than that.

But instead of depth of characterization and background, I get Barney Frank and Charles Schumer acting like Rush Limbaugh's favorite caricatures of them. I also get Sonny Bono behaving as though he were once again doing one of his television shows, instead of participating in arguably the most _serious business_ of all our lives--and again, with no explanation of Sonny's behavior. And I get thirteen Democratic "crossover Senators" who make the difference between "Guilty" and "Not Guilty" in the Senate--but with no, or scant, explanation of _why_ they cross over. Compare Tyrrell's Frank and Schumer with Twain's "King and Duke," and compare Tyrrell's Sonny Bono to Twain's Tom Sawyer, and you'll see what I mean.

I would certainly hope that the _real_ Bob Barr (who has just filed an impeachment resolution in the House in real life), the _real_ Henry Hyde, and the _real_ Orrin Hatch and Arlen Specter would make a better effort than this to (a) gather intelligence on the other side, and (b) make a coherent plan to win people over, through appeals to emotions either noble or ignoble. Tyrrell's book is not a plan. It is a wish. A wish that I myself will fully acknowledge sharing, but a wish nonetheless. And again, as a novel, it is far too pedestrian ever to take itself, or be taken, seriously.

The trouble is that I think Bill Clinton _should_ be impeached, and for the reasons that Tyrrell states, and for other actions and policies of his that are tantamount to treason. But by the time the professional book reviewers--which is to say, those who actually write novels for a living--get through with this book, they'll start such a drumbeat against it that the American people will lose its message in their disappointment in the finished work. And that's too bad for the country.

I Couldn't Put it Down!
I expected this book to be an ultra-conservative raving against Clinton. Instead, I found it to be the best recap of every scandal (so far) that has swirled around Clinton. The fictional part is interspersed with copies of actual documents of prior hearings, White House memos, etc. This book should be required reading for all citizens, for them to see all in one place the myriad of abuses and coverups which we have allowed to happen due to our nonchalance and feeling of "everybody does it". The historical part of the book is irrefutable, and much of it are things I have never heard previously, or certainly never read about in the media!

Don't buy it.
Overall, it is easy book to read but you could really tell that each chapter was written by a different person. Some chapters are good but others are really poor. The end of the chapter tests were way too easy compared to the actual test. It has an incredible number of mistakes and typos especially in the calculation of subnet masking. I went round in circles and wasted so much time trying to figure out why I could never get a question correct. I think this book has a second edition that I hope is better. Avoid this book and you will be a much happier person.

Easy? Confused?
OK! I know there are a lot of mistakes...especially for the beginner like me...I am really confused by this book because of its unnecessary mistakes...but, I really like the chapter 2...it's very easy to understand the ARP...IP or ICMP..However, I got confused on the chapter 5 with the wrong route table...Man, I hope it would be better when it come to the second edition!

EXCUSE ME, FORGET THE ERRORS, WHAT ABOUT CONTENT?
I am using this book to upgrade my TCP/IP 3.5 to TCP/IP 4.0. I am already a CNE, NCIP, and MCSE. I'm working towards my MCSE+I. This book is a first print (or close to) of a TECHNICAL book. It will have errors! On New Riders' web site, they have a page with corrections which you can print out. I used these corrections as I went through the book. The CONTENT of this book is great and on target. I give four stars because I know from my past education, experience and my knowledge of what is expected on the exam that is book is key! Minus one star for the errors which DON'T affect the content due to the corrections page, but hopefully will be gone in the next print. MCP Magazine also did ratings on the best TCP/IP study book and THIS BOOK WON!
