ACTUAL LIFE SAVER
After 5 years of my brother being diagnosed with schyzophrenia and coming in and out of mental institutions, this book came into the hands of my mother, who took him (when he was 23 years old) to Dr. Philpott's Hospital, at the time in St. Petersburg, Fla. To shorten, my brother is now 41 years old, has 3 children and has proved Dr. Philpott's stating he had cured 100% of the cases of "schyzophrenia" that came to his hands. Psychiatrists related to pharmaceuticals, of course, have always denied this capacity. If anyone knows if Dr. Philpott's work is being continued please advise to help all the victims of pharmaceuticals.

Beyond Roots: In Search of Blacks in the Bible

You gotta read this book!!
I got this book as a gift in an organization in college. It sat on my shelf until I was bored one day. I read this book and it has changed my way of thinking. It's not an Afro-centric book, but it does challenge the way most Christians in America think. It's a scholarly book, but it's not overwhelming. A point that stood out for me was the fact that Adam was made of the dust, soil, or dirt (whatever your translation) of the ground. Dust, soil, and dirt are all full of color. It can be brown, red, black, etc. but I've never seen it as white. There are no assumptions that everyone in the Bible is black, but it does make valid points that many of the people were people of color. McKissic doesn't just throw it out there and state claims. He backs everything up with research and the Scripture. I was impressed.

Every American Christian needs to read this book
In my mind Dwight McKissic's book is one of the two best volumes on the Black heritage in the Bible. This little book is an eye-opener that every Christian in America-- black and white should read.

How many times have we taken for granted the children's Bible story books that completely dominate the Christian retail market with their little white Jesus, white Moses etc.? The absolute truth is that Jesus and virutally every major major Bible character was a person of at least some color. You'll never take that for granted again.

McKissick is not delivering an political Afro-centric rewriting of history here. He is simply following principles of sound Scriptural exegesis that confirm what biology would tell you about the origin of races.

Having done a substantial amount of advanced research on this topic myself, I will say that I support McKissick's conclusions fully-- There areindeed numerous generations in Jesus genealogy that include people of color-- black color... That to be the father of all races, the first families of Adam and Noah had to be families of color.

I strongly encourage you to read this book. Also as a companion volume, you should look for Anthony T. Evans book, "Are Blacks Spiritually Inferior to Whites?: The Dispelling of an American Myth".

There are some volumes presenting material and views that go beyond rules sound Biblical interpretation. McKissick's and Evans' are not among those. They will dramatically affect your view of race in relation to the Bible and everyday life. The bottom line-- after reading this book, you will know that Jesus is a Savior from and for all races, not just one.

A Great Reference Guide for African-American Evangelicals
If you're tired of hearing that Egypt is always used as a type for sin in the Bible or that Moses' wife came from a place with a similar name to the ancient name for Ethiopia but not from Ethiopia certainly, this book helps you get past the racism in so much of fundamentalist evangelical Christianity today. I once heard a well-known white preacher say something like "The Ethiopian eunuch is the biggest fool in the Bible!"

I've given copies of this book especially to African-American young men who feel that trusting Christ as Savior is selling out and turning your back on your race. This book helps young people to see that much of what they hear are cultural biases and not from the Bible.

With the aid of Rev. McKissic, African Americans can discover the part that Africa did play in biblical times and get a great historical perspective. You can love Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and not have to give in to Uncle Tom theology at the same time.

Poignant, Unpretentious, and Moving
I stumbled across this book in a used book store and read it because I had nothing else on hand. It gripped me from the first page, where the author describes his four year old son, Max, staring down at the author on the floor as he suffers a heart attack. Before this book, I knew little about heart diseaseof any sort. I've learned a lot about heart disease, but also about courage and determination. This book will appeal to a broad range of readers. It is beautifully written, often amusing, and always gripping. I barely survived his heart transplant, and have a new awe for anybody who contemplates undergoing this procedure.

"Raising Lazarus"
Being an HCM victim myself, I found this book highly informative, educational, moving, emotional, and inspiring. I could relate to his suffering, his motivation, and his tenacity. It's a miracle that he survived to share his experiences. This book gave me the determination to educate myself, and motivate myself to live with and survive this condition, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. A great read for everyone; highly recommend!

Very informative! Hard to put down!
Having a 8 year old son with IHSS/HCM I found this book the most informative of the hundreds of articles I have read. This book gives the details patients,(or in this case parents of the patient)want to know. I have read it three times and will read it again. I like the in depth discussions about being a heart patient, both the physical and emotional affects.

Sanskrit Grammar

Exhaustive and well organized reference work
We have been using Whitney's Grammar in addition to Whitney's Roots and the Lanman Reader for the purposes of learning Sanskrit this year. Our professor teaches from a historical linguistic perspective for which this book is fairly well suited. This book is most remarkable for its extremely well organized format and exhaustive treatment of the forms. The inclusion of Vedic forms is very nice. The Sanskrit Reader by Charles R. Lanman is the perfect complement to this reference grammar. The excellent notes in Lanman's reader refer the student to Whitney's Grammar, the vocabulary is helpful and the stories are delightful. Whitney's Grammar is a must for a thorough grasp of the forms though.

A classic
Fresh, readable, and a treasure. I used this book at the University of Washington and it is as great as ever.

Revolutionary
As a Chinese herbal practitioner, I have recommended this book to several clients who have autistic children. In almost every case, there has been a marked improvement in the child's situation. The book details not only the science and theory behind Dr. Philpott's approach, but more importantly spends a lot of time discussing practical implementation. Conventional western medicine still tends to ignore the dramatic impact our diets can have on the mental/emotional aspect of our lives; BRAIN ALLERGIES makes a very significant contribution to the growing literature around the old and very true proverb: "we are what we eat." If you're dealing with a child with emotional and/or cognitive difficulties, PLEASE read this book!

Magnet Therapy
William H. Philpott, M.D., Dwight K. Kalita, Ph.D., and Burton Goldberg teamed up to write Magnet Therapy, a comprehensive guide to using magnets in the prevention and cure of disease.

The authors explain that "electromagnetic energy is an integral part of the human body. It can help produce illness and help bring healing, depending on its type and strength." We are surrounded by electromagnetism--nearly everything produces magnetic fields, including the human body. Magnets have two poles--north, or positive; and south, or negative. Generally, negative magnetic fields are used in healing. Positive can be used only in special instances and under medical supervision.

The authors clearly explain the sources of magnetism and how it works in the body. They then describe, in general, how negative electromagnetic fields are used to stimulate the body's ability to heal.

The bulk of the book is devoted to listing of 35 health conditions, complete with a description of causes and detailed instructions on using magnet therapy to prevent and heal each condition. Health problems discussed include addictions, heart disease, diabetes, children's ailments, and reproductive organ diseases.

"While magnet therapy may just now be gaining more widespread use and popularity in the United States and elsewhere, the use of magnetic energy for healing dates back thousands of years." Magnet Therapy provides all the information readers need to begin using this ancient technique to improve and maintain their health.

The Roots, Verb-Forms and Primary Derivatives of the Sanskrit Language

An indespensable reference work
Sanskrit must hold the record for the most verbal forms derivable from a single verbal root. Whitney's work not only provides the forms - primary conjugations, secondary derivations and some derivatives - but tags them with the era of Sanskrit in which they occur - Vedas, Updanishads, Epic, Classical etc. This is a must in the library of anyone who reads - or attempts to read - Sanskrit.

A compelling account of Vietnam combat
Dwight Birdwell and William Nolan have produced a very good personal account of an armored crewman's 16-month tour in Vietnam. In addition to absorbing combat narratives, Birdwell provides a lot of details and context to help readers understand his story. He gives explicit reasons why his unit's morale and performance deteriorated over his tour, and how the Tet Offensive changed the nature of the war. I highly recommend this book to any student of the military or the Vietnam War. U.S. military officers should read it for examples of how good leadership can inspire a unit, and bad leadership can cost lives. Birdwell highlights the role of good, solid NCOs as the beating heart of a military unit.

TOPS THE LIST
Having read hundreds of books about Vietnam war combat from the perspective of infantry, Rangers, Special Forces, LRRPs, SEALs, and helicopter gunships, I was pleased to find a rare book dealing with American armor combat. With the help fo veteran Vietnam war book author Keith William Nolan, Dwight Birdwell has produced an action packed, easy to read, page turner on his 16 months in Vietnam with a 25th Division armor unit, protecting the main supply route from Saigon to Tay Ninh near the Cambodian border. Arriving Sept. 1967, pre-Tet Birdwell's service as a M48 Patton tank crewman, began with a well lead unit, high moral, and eager for a fight with the Viet Cong. Tet changed all that when Birdwell's unit was dispatched to Saigon where they ran headlong into an enemy regiment which had broke through the wire at Tan Son Nhut Air Base on January 31, 1968. Birdwell's bravery and initiative under intense enemy RPG and gunfire and panic of some fellow troopers won him a Silver Star and a Purple Heart. The narrative of the searing engagement draws one into the action like you are a witness to the blast of tank cannon and the whine of enemy bullets. Birdwell wins a second Silver Star at An Duc in July, 1968, while describing the steady decline of morale and efficiency as troopers realize Washington had no strategy for winning the war. Despite heavy combat, Birdwell manages to preserve his humanity and a measure of idealism, which motivated him to volunteer for Vietnam service, as a teenager. Upon his return to Oklahoma, Birdwell used his G. I. Bill to get an education and eventually earn a law degree and now practices law in Oklahoma City. Of Cherokee heritage, he served for two years as the Chief Justice of the Cherokee Nation. Birdwell's book provides an excellent map to conveniently track ambush and battle site. Also, there are 16 pages of photographs. His epilogue features a "status report" on many officers and troopers he served with and survived the war, including his squadron commander Glenn K. Otis, who went on to be Commander and Chief, U.S Army Europe. Birdwell's book should be on the must read list of every military officer and NCO who might serve in a ground combat unit or support them.

The Truth About Vietnam By Birdwell & Nolan
This Is a story of truth from the men who were In vietnam.Nolan served in the vietnam war.And from reading this book he takes you there. And tells us the american people what we never knew that happened during this war.An amazing truthful book to read.I would give it ten stars."Truth In justice for all of our vets" They are the back bone of this country. The goverment should know. When our vets came home sick and dying from agent orange. Our goverment denied everything.Even the one who gave the orders to drop It. Killed his own son. When his son died he knew it was from agent orange. He later killed himself because of his guilt.Since he was a high ranking officer he was sworn to silence.Like all the other military officers. Our goverment does not care about the men who not only died for this country. Also the ones they killed and never admitted to.The cost to the goverment would be to great. So deny ,deny, at all cost. As the govement has always lied about our vets. When they came home sick from Vietnam also Saudi Arabia. The goverment denied all of this again.Deformed babies, cancer,of all kinds. The goverment again denied our men came in contact with any chemicals to make them sick. When it has been proven that the air they breathed and the contact with tanks were contaminated from Iraq weapons used on our military soldiers.WHY''

Mourt's Relation: A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth

The "American Dream" and Puritan Propaganda
In the colonial stage of America's discovery, Europeans' conception of America appeared to be positive because at this stage the subject was the exploration and settlement of America and that was why Europeans received exaggerating accounts of the New World and its manifold opportunities. The colonizers' tracts and the travelers' accounts exaggerated the romantic attractions of the New World. The vast and abundant resources of the New World were admired, in a propagandistic and persuasive discourse. Both the Puritans and the colonizers (which were often one and the same) wrote exaggerating accounts of their adventures to lure Europeans over to the New World. Mourt's Relation (1622) was written to persuade Europeans that life in Massachusetts was a venture in a plentiful land. The book overlooks the calamities of the first winter and overstates the rich resources of Massachusetts. Yet, it is an excellent read.

Excellent concise history as seen by those who made it
This is an excellent book. The unknown author ("Mourt") describes in detail the accounts of life during the settlement of the Pilgrims. "He" describes the account in a day-to-day style, accounting for making food, building houses, and encounters with the indigenous peoples. The Pilgrams' travels to find a home and the actual settling are fascinating and well described. I will never think of the Pilgrims or indigenous peoples the same way again. Overall, this book is very insightful.

The language is archaic, I feel I must warn you. But if you can get past that, and you like colonial history, you'll love this one. It will give you a much better idea about the Pilgrams, far beyond the over-dramatized and unrealistically happy Thanksgiving story.

Wonderful and Surprising
This delightful little book describes the first year of the Pilgrims in America. Written to make life in Massachusetts sound like an adventure in a bounteous land, the book ignores the extreme hardship of the first winter and instead focuses on the rich resources of Massachusetts and the relationship the Pilgrims developed with the Indians. Here, the book drives home two points: (1) Europeans had long come to North American to fish and trade. These activities left a mixed legacy that the pilgrims had to overcome. (2) The Indians were everywhere. In fact, the first trip by the Pilgrims to visit chief Massasoit was motivated in part by this fact: Indians families were coming in great numbers to Plymouth to look at the English and interact with them. This was keeping the English from focusing on their farming. A wonderful book!
