My first favorite author and favorite book
Ludell, was the first book that I read through my school RIF program. It was written by a black author and I told everyone I knew about it. I was in sixth grade and this book changed and enhanced my thoughts. It is a book I will cherish always. I continually passes it on to young ladies and they all have their own personally experience about this book. I have lost my original copy however, I was able to order it again. I lost Ludell and Willie, however, I do have Ludell New York adventure. My first and favorite author will always be Ms. Brenda Wilkenson, she open my eyes to the art of Reading. Please ask you local bookstore to order this book for you. It has some much of pleasant memories of when a Child could really be a Kid.

This is a wonderful preteen book. .
Ludell is a wonderful preteen book. I read this book as well as Ludell and Willie and many many more when I was 11yrs old. Of all the books I read as a young girl, this was my very favorite. It really helped me to understand some of the things I was going through at that time in my life. Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down until the last page. I cant wait to give it to my girls. Anyone looking for a charming coming of age book for youngsters glued to the television should consider this book.

a fabulous book for pre-teens
When I was 10 years old I was an avid t.v. watcher. Much to my mother chagrin that's all I did everyday. After many arguments and threats she decided to take matters into her own hands. She put me on punishment. No t.v. for a month. This was beyond punishment to me. She might as well had told me not to breathe again. I refused to talk to her for days. One day out of the blue she came into my room and handed me a book. We were very poor and to 'waste' money was something that was frowned upon. So she gives me this book and tells me that books are what she used to 'watch' when she was a kid. I grudgingly took the book. I quickly lost myself in Ludell's life. She reminded me of my mom. She's curios and full of life. Ludell's freinds became my frieds. At 10 years old I finished reading Ludell in less than a day! A couple of years later walking aimlessly around the public library (I now 'watched' more books than I watched t.v.) I found Ludell and Willie. I shouted as loud as I could I was so happy. I knew Ludell and Willie belonged together. Now at 21, I'm looking for Ludell to pass down to my cousin. We have similar taste in books. It's a shame that Ludell is out of print. I wish I would have kept the one I had but sadly it got mixed up in some things that were donated to the Salvation Army. Whoever was the lucky person to receive Ludell, I know they loved that book as much as I did.

Great
I first read this book at the age of 11. Ludell & Willie is a young adult love story that you will love forever. Ludell lives with her strict grandmother who hardly ever give her and Willie time along. Willie is the star athlete, so Ludell is alway worried that another girl will take him away since she's can't go out on dates, but Willie alway prove his love. I'm trying to find the sequal for this one, but it's a hard to find book.

I think that this book is a great book about children.
I think this book was a great example of what children go through in life. It tells not only the bad things about growing up it also shows some of the problems that young adults face during the first years adolescents.

Not Separated, Not Equal
The main character is Malene Freeman; she is tall and very skinny. Another character is Yvette Williams, which is very shy; she always tries to fit in with the white students. Eva Austin is the smartest black student out of the six.
This story takes place in Pineridge, Georgia in the year 1965; it is about six black students that get sent to Pineridge High School. This school is all white, so they have difficulty fitting in. The white folks show that they don't want them there by playing cruel tricks on them.
Malene has had a hard life anyway and she doesn't need this. Many bad things happen to her throughout the book but she never stop trying to be nice to the white folks. At the end something bad happens but you will have to read it. Lets just say they never get the respect the black people should get.
I didn't really like the book because it got very confusing and the word choice wasn't great. I would give it three stars out of five. The part I didn't like was at the very first when the dogs attacked Malene. I didn't see the point for it.

To be Equal or Not to be Equal...That is the Question.
Not Separate, Not Equal is a good book for grades 7+. It is a book about a girl who goes through tough times in her life because she's black. The book includes action and drama that the girl faces through out years of racism and cruelity against African Americans. The story that gave the most impact on me was when the girl was being chased by two vicious dogs that were unleashed by a white owner whom happened to dislike blacks. The dogs had chased her down and ripped her clothes and skin. This book also taught me to respect black people even more than I do now because in the book it mentioned people at her school (which was practically an "All White School") making fun of her and saying their rude on-going commentaries towards her about her being different and dirty because she was black. This book is a very touching book too because there is one white person who is halp black but has white skin and her friends don't know it. That friend treats the black girl no different than she would her other friends and because it made her friends mad just for hanging out with her, the half black girl left all of her friends just to stay and stick up for the black girl. I would rate this story four stars because it is one of the best books i've ever read but not the first but it is certainly #2 on my list.

Not Seperate, Not Equal
This Multicultural book is a great book if you don't understand why Black Americans were made fun of. I Iiked this book because it lets you see why you should be nice people that you don't like or you think they dress poorly or you don't like them because their skin color is different from yours. If you're looking for a book on prejudice, then you should read, Brenda Wilkensons,
Not Separate, Not Equal.
Some of the Black American students were getting mad because other white people were making fun of them. So they went to their school office and told the teachers what had happened.
This is a multicultural book because it talks about Prejudice, Black Americans, and people being made fun of.

Nice ending to the series . .
A few years ago, I was in the library and happened to look down to find this book. I was very surprised (and pleased) to find it - I read Ludell and Ludell & Willie when I was 8 or 9 years old and always wondered what happened to my favorite couple. While this book doesn't seem to have the same "flavor" as the first two, it is still an enjoyable read. (It seems a bit odd to see Ludell as an independent adult while she's still in a series of books written for children.) Nevertheless, for those of you that read the first two, Ludell's New York Time provides a satisfying ending to her story. Now, if you can only find the book . . .

This book is unrealistic.
The language and actions of the kids and the parents are unrealistic. This book is a waste of time and money. The parents are too strict and the kids are trying too hard to be cool and fit in. School is nothing like this book has it.

A Definitely Cool Book
A Definitely Cool Book
Looking for a good book? Try Definitely Cool by Brenda Wilkinson. The book is about a girl who starts junior high and is really nervous. She makes new friends and gets a boyfriend. But she deals with a lot of prejudice. She is invited to a very bad party, during school! Does Roxanne go? Read the book to find out.
I really liked this book because it is about a girl starting junior high and it deals with a lot of everyday problems that teenagers face. I can relate to being at a new school because I just started middle school.

This is a really good book If you are a teenage girl
This book is my favorit because it deals with things some girls have tro deal with!
