Entertaining Wexford novel
I don't find Ruth Rendell's Wexford mysteries as engrossing as her psychological novels, but anything by Rendell is nevertheless entertaining and well worth reading. This one finds Wexford and his partner, Mike Burden, investigating the death of an older woman found strangled in a parking garage at a shopping mall. Numerous suspects abound in the woman's neighborhood but Wexford is soon incapacitated, however, by a car bomb (meant for someone else). Burden takes the lead by pursuing a withdrawn young man who lives with his domineering mother. Burden's intuition fails him though and it is Wexford who eventually identifies the killer by subtly noting the habits and motivations of the suspects and even the items they purchased in the shopping mall. The book is a little overlong for a Wexford mystery and gets sluggish a little in the middle but picks back up toward the end. Every character seems like a likely culprit (the victim was a blackmailer) and it is hard to see what is coming until close to the last chapter. If you are just beginning with Ruth Rendell, don't let this one detract you from her - she is one of the best writers in the world today.

Very Good
I wish some of the many Ruth Rendell fans would have reviewed this one so I could have a jumping off place. Since I discovered Ms. Ruth in September 2001, I have worked my way through 21 of her 50 or more, aka Barbara Vine. Inspector Wexford's stories are not as interesting to me as some of the non Wexford works but this was a neat one and I never dreamed the killer would be the killer. This was the most convoluted, mixed up mystery I think I have ever reaad. The victim really got what she deserved, hope that is not a spoiler. The last 20 pages seemed to go rather fast, compared to the first 2/3 of the book. But oh, well, It was good.

A tangled web...
The Veiled One was the first Ruth Rendell novel and I am delighted to report that I was thoroughly captivated and entertained. Rendell writes fluid prose with interesting characters and acute observations about human nature and behavior. I particularly liked the main character Wexford and his naturally dry and mostly sarcastic wit. The mystery is well plotted and wraps up neatly. To be honest, the ending did occur to me, but by the time I got to the end I was impressed enough by the whole effort that I didn't care about that at all. The ending is quite satisfying... the type that makes sense while still surprising enough. I look forward to many more enjoyable evenings with Ruth Rendell and Chief Inspector Wexford.

keeps it simple
I have found this book, thus far, to be very helpful in my first year of Calculus(Calculus AB). I originally purchased this book only for some additional practice on the AP type of questions; however, I have found this book to really be quite useful throughout the year. There have been numerous times when I have fallen asleep or just 'spaced out' in class, however this book has allowed me to catch up and fully understand the material I missed. This book also allows you to get ahead of the class on your own fairly easily,... but that's only if you actually want to do it. The explanations found in this book are kept in plain simple English, making it easy to grasp the material at hand. I would recommend this book to someone who wants to have the material explained in friendly English. Calculus does not have to be hard at all, and this book does a good job proving it.

Cezary P.
Okay. So you are calculus student scared out of your wits because you are taking or will be taking a rigorous calculus AB or BC course, and you want to get yourself a prep book so that you'll do well.

I was in your situation a year ago. And I went online to get a prep book, but I didn't know which one to get. Do you find yourself in this situation?

Then BUY THIS BOOK! Why? Because this is the ONLY, the absolute ONLY, AP prep book that is written with a voice. You can either buy this book, written by a witty, experienced, high school teacher who teaches teen-agers just like YOU, or you can buy another Princeton Review written by snooty PhD who doesn't know how to communicate with young people and explain concepts to them. I read this book over the summer before my class, and it was clear enough for me to go through all 663 pages by myself since it was written with GREAT humor, insight, charm, WIT (and lots of it), so I felt like I had an actual teacher sitting next to me, teaching me. When I took a predictor test at the end of my summer study, I got a four. So before I even entered the class, I was in AP-credit range, thanks to this book.

Now, all I have to worry about is polishing up my skills. Yet even now, this book is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to me.

Why, you ask?

Have you ever tried reading a college calculus book? These things are useful as paperweights, and paperweights only. I refer to this book instead. And whenever I miss a lecture or don't understand something, this book is always at my side. And whenever, I encounter stupid problems, I do a Kelley-AP-Prep problem instead, and I get the same understanding, along with all the humor, without all the hassle.

If I hadn't bought this book, I don't think I'd be getting a solid A in my BC Calc class. It has been the easiest, most enjoyable math class I've ever taken. I love it.

Mr. Kelley, I wish to thank you for this book, as well as for your autograph! You've made my life a whole lot easier!

This is THE BEST AP Calculus Book ever written!!
My AP Calculus teacher has used Mr. Kelley's book extensively in our class to clarify topics that are not covered well in our textbook. This book has been the PERFECT aid in helping me to understand calculus! You only need to purchase ONE AP prep book---THIS ONE! This book covers topics much more clearly than Barron's or Princeton Review. I know because I've tried both. Another huge plus to this book is the fabulously entertaining writing style that Mr. Kelley uses. He definitely knows how to write to appeal to high school students! My advice----YOU MUST BUY THIS BOOK!!!! It's great!!
