A must read
If you have become interestedin Dr. Weil's latter books on health, such as natural health natural medicine, you will love this earlier work that deals with everything from drug use in other cultures,to why chilly peppers get some people "high". And just what does getting high really mean?Well, it means experiencing shifts in consciousness that come from a myriad of sources, and most all don't involve the dangerous use of "refined substances" that people in our culture abuse and destroy themselves with. Read this book and discover this mystery.

Entertaining and Enlightening
In this book, written years before he became a major celebrity on the talk show circuit, Dr. Weil touches on many of his areas of interest, such as ethnobotany, anthropology, consciousness expanding drugs, and the relationship between spirit and matter. The book is at once highly entertaining and enlightening; it's anecdotal format makes great bedtime reading. In the chapters psychedelic drugs, Dr. Weil exhibits an invigorating refusal to reflexively condemn drug use, courageously outlining the possible benefits of drug use, while taking care to document the dangers, This reasoned, balanced approach to issues will be familiar to fans of Dr. Weil.

Very thought provoking
This book is extremely thought provoking; it is written as a series of essays so its nearly impossible to lose interest. For many people, this book will shatter many conceptions of drugs and medicinal plants that they may have. Doc Weil fans will love this although the style is different (the essays were written on the road during his fellowship). Read especially if you're interetsed in yage, marijuana, and all sorts of mushrooms

Highly Recommended!
A popular holistic health author and radio personality, Weil has assembled a single comprehensive compendium of vital information on natural remedies, vitamins and minerals, women's health issues, common illnesses, and healthy living.

Dr. Weil is your trusted expert, order his newest CD
I first heard of Dr. Weil while watching a show on TV. His calming voice and interesting breathing techniques got my attention. I was interested in Yoga and could relate to the calming effects of a peaceful lifestyle. This book is a complement to all the great work Dr. Weil has done. I also recently purchased his CD called Sound Body,Sound Mind and play it often to recieve the benefits of deep relaxation, not to mention the healing effects. I used to drink Decaf coffee but still felt that it affeted my sleep. Dr. Weil had the answer! I started drinking a relaxing tea for improved sleep. I also take my vitamin C, cook with lots of garlic and take echinacea as advised. While no one could have all the ailments discussed - you will feel like an expert when a friend asks you for a solution to their problem. If you find even one solution to a need in your life - I think this book would be worth purchasing.

Healing with Plants
This book is a thorough cataloguing of how plants were and still are used in medicine by Native American and Mexican culture. The author obtained her information by interviews with patients and pouring through endless articles on the subject. It is a study of ethnobotany in the American and Mexican West that is both interesting and useful, especially to the professional who is treating patients who might also be taking these medicines.

Fantastico
A friend recommended this book to me because I am suffering from fatigue brought on by prolonged antibiotic treatment. In the two years that I have been sick, nothing has given me as much hope. Although Andrew Weil describes the shortcomings and dangers of traditional medicine, this book is not a rejection of traditional medicine but an attempt to broaden our understanding of the mind and body and their mechanisms for healing. Weil gives examples of patients who have been healed despite medical failures, proof that the human body is capable of curing itself, an idea that Weil describes repeatedly in the book and that can give hope to all patients whom modern medicine has failed. Weil also describes varios alternative treatments and gives suggestions about diet, exercise, vitamins and herbs.

A beautiful invitation to harness the power of the mind
Author and world-famous psychic and spoon-bender Uri Geller has written a visually stunning and thought-provoking book about how to heal ourselves with the power of our minds. MIND MEDICINE begins without assuming that the reader already has prior knowledge of this subject. Almost every page of this book is graced with beautiful pictures, interesting charts, and fascinating quotations that are relevant to the topic being discussed. Luscious illustrations supplement the elegant simplicity of this wonderfully informative text in such a way that the reader's mind is fully engaged while reading.

The premise of Mind Medicine is that we can and do affect our health with our lifestyles and attitudes... which we can change. Geller advocates judicious use of modern medicine in conjunction with the healing powers of our minds, yet points out that most of us do not fully harness our own healing abilities. We are healthiest when we feel loved and happy -- and this joyous, light energy attracts more good things and people to us. Geller invites us to contemplate what makes us happy, and how free we are to change.

This book is written so simply and clearly that I envision it being a text book for children or adults who wish to learn how to discover what Uri Geller calls MindPower... the higher powers that allow him to bend spoons, locate hidden things, and affect things from a distance. Geller makes his irresistible invitation to us crystal-clear in the introduction to his book, "The mind of every one of us possesses an unimaginable gift and you are about to learn how to use it. Open it now." You'll be glad you did!

Great Book!
After ordering three of Uri Gellers Books from Amazon , I awaited delivery with great anticipation and was I thrilled when they came. The Mind Medicine book is FAB! It is a well written and well laid out book with stunning photo's and chapters that make you really think '' I CAN heal myself!''. Written clearly without any 'Psycho-babble' it is a great thought envoker.

Delivered along with Uri's 'Little book of Mind-Power' I am looking forward to focusing my energies inwards rather than outwards and also I shall enjoy reading my third book - Jonathan Margolis' boigraphy 'Uri Geller - Magician or Mystic '.. I can't wait to see what the future will bring !

Uri Geller's Mind Medicine and changing your life
Uri Geller's Mind Medicine is truly one of the most important purchases of my adult life. Uri is a clearly a gifted and blessed man who has an almost shocking and genuine care for humanity. I found this book to be a most positive influence on my own daily life and my interactions with othe people. One of the most profound and powerful experiences I have know is a particular pasrt of the book where Uri invites you to pray along with him for individuals who you have hurt or been hurt by. Also, I was taken back by Uri's visual guides in relations to forming positive thoughts around you, those you love and those who again, you have injured or been injured by. These excercises are real and one can literally feel the physical difference in the body. I would recommend this book by Uri to all who wish to improve thier own lives and the people they touch every day of thier lives. I think that covers virtually every one of us walking this earth.

A great book for open-minded readers
This is a must read for anyone interested in non-conventional medicine.

Gentle, noninvasive, effective
Medicine has taken a lot of turns turns away from effective treatments (and this is why the medical profession had to admit in June of 2000 doctors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S.) but there has never been any excuse for turning away from a safe, gentle treatment that even if it couldn't help some certainly couldn't hurt any. The stories in this book are amazing. It is a good, indeed wonderful thing are more and more doctors are turning toward "alternative" medicine (which actually is a bit of a misnomer--"modern" medicine is the alternative, mostly to good health). I guess many doctors consider it easier--and more profitable--to prescribe often dangerous drugs as bandaids rather than take the time and patience to learn treatments such as Fulford's. What a shame, and what a disgrace.

A Dying Man's Opus
This book was written in the December year's of an accomplished osteopathic physician's life. It is his call for everyone to take responsibility for their life and their health. It starts out as an explanation of osteopathy and a retelling of his years as an osteopathic physician. Fulford had trained his hands to be such sensitive diagnostic and healing tools, that he could feel a single strand of hair hidden beneath 17 sheets of paper. He used this technique to train other osteopathic students to increase the sensitivity of their own hands.

This book is interwoven with touching stories of patients he's helped throughout his practice. As he aged, he found that he could only work with an increasingly younger population, as those patients fed his energy. Whereas adults seemed to be so entangled in their own web of stress and disease, that they seemed to zap his energy as he tried to treat them with his hands.

The book ends with a call to live healthier, more meaningful lives. I recommend this book for everyone, but particularly for osteopathic medical school applicants and their M.D. counterparts. It gives a good narrative explanation of the philosophical expectations of osteopathic medicine. But as a strong believer in osteopathic medicine, and as a future osteopathic medical student, I believe this book poignantly elicits the direction in which medical care should be heading.

It was good
It was good, but not the best i have read. I did learn a lot so I need to give credit for that.

A whole new view of medical systems
Andrew Weil's book was assigned as supplmental reading in a sociology of health and healing systems course at Park College in Southern California. With phrases like, "nothing works all the time and everything works some of the time," Andrew explored health systems worldwide from accupuncture in China to witchdoctors in Latin America. The idea that Western doctors actually gain much of their credibility not because of their own skills, but because they take credit for what the body already does is interesting. Health and medicine previously seemed like a highly scientific study, but viewed from Andrew's perspective, it is, in many ways, philosophically and culturally specific. Andrew brings a whole new world to medicine. Fascinting perspective.

Excellent book - long overdue
Weil writes a very comprehensive book that asks the essential question, "What is health if not th absence of sickness?". Very informative and thought provoking!!!

Is there a doctor in the house?
Let's not get too mushy about this book. I agree that it has its message about spiritual aspects to healing, and that modern medicine ain't the godsend that seems to justify all the faith people put in it. But I want to point out a couple of things: First of all Mehl-Madrona's spirituality is not pure native american by any stretch of the imagination. I would be generous if I said it was a combination of native american and christian beliefs. Second, and more important, the "healing" that he claims occured was never proven medically. There's no official results shown before or after the "treatment" that indicates there was indeed a sick person that became well. You're just taking Lewis's word for it, and the truth of the matter is that I doubt it - I read it and I doubt it.

I'm all in favor of getting in touch with our spiritual nature, and I do believe that good medicine requires strong direction from the patient as to the course of the cure. The kidney patients in the beginning of the book are a prime example of how "medicine" can go bad when it takes it's own unmanaged course. I applaud Mehl-Madrona for writing about that. But oddly, he exudes powerlessness throughout the entire book. There are many such inconsistencies here, so be forewarned.

I think that in summary I have to say that the Coyote he claims to know is not the one I am familiar with. Nevertheless, for what it's worth, I liked it.

Moving, educational and inspiring.
This book is a well written merging of two subjects. The first is a personal sharing of Lewis Mehl-Madrona's upbringing and life experience as a half N.A. Native, his pursuit of a medical degree and specialty and his increasing disillusionment with the "science" of medicine as it is now widely practiced. The second is about Lewis' discovery of N.A. Native spirituality and shamani sm. He leads us on a winding path of discovery that introduces us to the intriguing characters who use shamanism to heal others, often while their own lives are in disarray, to those who sought healing and perhaps most importantly, to the spirits who assisted in the ceremonies. While pursuing this path of curing the individual, rather than the symptom, it seems that Lewis will lose site of his original goal to obtain his medical speciality. But, as so often occurs, as he helps others to heal, the path circles around to encompass his own needs and he completes his original path, a more well-rounded and enlightened human. More capable of understanding. More capable of giving what is really required. I found the writing to be powerful, the personal drama riveting and the glimpse into the ceremonies, symbolism and spiritualism of the N.A. shaman both moving and educational. After all these years of hearing the stories shared by N.A. natives, but not really understanding, I finally "got it". This book slaked a thirst I didn't know I had. Lewis not only shared his story but acted as a teacher and I know that I've grown as a result. I highly recommend it and hope that we'll hear more from this writer.

Clear, honest sharing of Native American spirituality.
This is THE best book on Native American spirituality I have ever read. Lewis Mehl-Medrano did an excellent job of sharing his autobiographical experiences as a "half-breed" in learning the spirituality of his family in a way that was relevant to those readers unfamiliar with N.A. spirituality. His presentation was refreshingly non-New Age in an honest, clearly written description of Native American healing beliefs and practices juxtaposed with his training and experiences as a western-trained medical doctor. The book was inspirational without being syrupy or lecturing. I truly enjoyed this book and will read it again.
