An Essential reference for all nutrition students
A user friendly and very readable text book. I have been using previous editions and look out for new ones. If a Nutrition student can afford to own just one text book, this is it.

Great source of information, very comprehensive, informative
I have been using this book (former editions for 10 years). It is one of the most educated, entertaining, and comprehebsive nutrition books a have ever had. I am a nurse and share nutrition wisdom from this book with my patients on daily bases.

This is tough and not necessarily new stuff
As dieters, we're always looking for the magic bullet. This ain't it. It's a way of eating that certainly should make you healthy - if (and that's a very big IF) you can stick to it. I guess I was a little disappointed. I'm always trying to figure out how to eat at a party (celery sticks and carrots; stay away from the buffet table)or how to face a family celebration (consider skipping them if it's a fixed menu.) I thought there might be some new answers here. There aren't. The writer says that she has always struggled with her weight. I suggest you don't look at her picture. It's a hard sell. She doesn't look, think or write like a fat person. She uses words such as "wolf down", "gobble," and "devour" to describe the eating behavior of overweight people. I was insulted. She uses illustrations that are so outrageous that you'd have to be an idiot to think that they were true (like the naked lady dancing on her garbage can. Think about it - could anyone on a weight loss plan really get so caught up in exercising that they would take out the garbage naked??? Perhaps self-esteem is not a major issue with fat people?)
Maybe that's it. I couldn't believe she was ever one of us and so I felt like I was being condescended to throughout the whole book.

A Happy Dieter
"The Right Bite" was one of the best books I have ever read on how to lose weight. I had no idea there were so many triggers that could keep a person from losing and maintaining weight. Up until the time I had kids I was able to remain at the weight that was ideal for me. After my kids were born I gained a lot of weight that yo-yoed, and I wasn't sure what was causing it to do that. I have always been athletic so it was hard for me to understand why I could not control my weight and why it was too high.
After reading "The Right Bite", I discovered the personal triggers that had been causing my weight problems. The most surprising trigger of all was that I learned that I was eating too few calories. I always thought that to lose weight I needed to starve myself. I find that I can eat as much of the Right Bite foods as I want and eat whenever I feel hungry and I still lose weight as long as I avoid my other personal triggers.By following the priciples in "The Right Bite", I can see that I am changing my metabolism back to a thin person's and for the first time since my three children were born I am practically to my pre-pregnancy weight. I would love to see a Right Bite cookbook as I plan to eat this way for life.

Long Term Dieting Success with the Right Bite
Like many others I have tried all kinds of diets from the Rice Diet to an all protein plan that left me barely able to cross the street. The Right Bite is the first book I have seen that lays out a plan that can be adapted to the individual's biological makeup. I always wondered why certain foods, situations, or life events caused me to lose control of my eating while my wife or others around me were unaffected. Now I know how and why MY body responds to various stimuli. I can now follow the Right Bite program to gain control over food cravings that would overtake me unexpectedly at different times. I know that fine tuning the diet for my particular needs will take time, but the book provides a CORE diet that lets me get started on the right path and lets me experiment without fear of losing control. I have already discovered a couple of triggers ( smoke filled rooms and caffeine) that cause me problems and I am slowly but surely gaining the knowledge about my body that I need to develop my own life time eating program.

Mah Jong Handbook : How to Play, Score, and Win the Modern Game

An excellent book for learning the game of Mah Jong
This book is well written and organized. The writing is clear and understandable and the rules and scoring of the game are presented in a manner that makes them very easy to reference. A must have book for anyone playing the Chinese or Japanese version of the game.

Satisfaction Guaranteed!!!!!!!!!
Eleanor Noss Whitney has not only succeeded in writing a concise, understandable, and comprehensive Mah Jong handbook, she has elegantly and expertly distilled into a mere 176 pages the essential tools and strategies to achieve true mastery of this ancient and wonderful game.

Whitney's handbook is the only book that most players will ever need to become a knowledgeable, confident and winning Mah Jong player. The basics of play, including seating, dealer selection, wall-building, tile-dealing and play are laid out clearly with helpful examples and good illustrations. The scoring of Mah Jong is explained with numerous carefully-constructed examples, with helpful diagrams of each tile scenario for good visual reference.

The strategy of the game is brilliantly explained in Part III, again with numerous examples that gradually train beginning players how to quickly make strategic decisions to enhance their play. As Whitney explains, Mah Jong is a game governed by sheer luck of the draw, yet the "skillful player is actually one who knows how to adapt to his luck." Her extensive explanations and examples of both "offensive" and "defensive" strategies are the soul of the book, and I, for one, was amazed how quickly my comphrehension of the game improved after having read the entire chapter.

It is true that the focus of the book is primarily on the Japanese and American rules and variations, but Chinese equivalent terms are included in an extensive Glossary-Index. For the vast majority of players, this will not be a serious problem.

If you buy one book on Mah Jong, it should be this one.

A must for anyone wanting to learn to play Mah Jong Quickly
How many times have you wanted to play a game of Mah Jong but you you are bombarded with different rule books on the subject - each one giving a more confusing set of scoring instructions There are many times when I have encountered this problem especially when teaching newcomers the game We play using Eleanor Noss Whitney's "A Mah Jong Handbook" as our rules which we find of all the other books on Mah Jong the easiest and most understandable set of rules compared to all teh others which clutter the field with a multitude of sets and scoring tables that make the game a nightmare to play Her rules are Clear, Concise, Unambiguous and simple to use I use her book to teach all newcomers the game and everyone agrees that her rules are the best I show them the scoring from the other books and their examples and explain to them that there are many other variations regarding the scoring and everyone opts for the simple version without any complications

I would heartly recomend this book to everyone if they want to get into playing the game within inside a hour of opening the book There is plain simple concise instuctions that dont confuse you with umpteen different names for the same Mah Jong scoreing hand

If there is one book you should get to learn and play Mah Jong - It should be this one - You wont regret it

A student's opinion
This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.

Normal and Clinical Nutrition
I found this Nutrition book to very helpful. It is very informative and easy to understand. I enjoyed this book and will most likely keep it because it can be very helpful in the future. It contains information that is very helpful

Easily digestible
I loved reading this book as the language used is very attractive.Information introduced in a very reader friendly way and different colours are used to stop you falling asleep. This book explains even tiny things and avoids complicated pionts by referring the in depth reader to Appendices at the back of the book.I recommend this book for any body intrested to get significant information in a short time. This book is very useful and easily digestible specially if English is not your first language.

An awesome book for the above average reader.
This book is very interesting. It has extensive amount of information about everything you ever wanted to know about nutrition. From tables that display the amount of vitamins and minerals your body needs to information of various food items (ie. calories, fats, protien, etc.), this book is for you. Gaining a little to much weight? This book could be a cheaper version of a dietician. However, you may not find this interesting if your english skills are not up to par. Students in post-secondary use this book, so if your english skills are not to good, you might want to try another book. To sum it up, you could use this book but you better be ready to get out that dictionary.

understandable for a difficult subject!
Although I found this subject much harder than I anticipated, the manner in which Whitney wrote the subject helped me understand the material. I have learned much more than I had thought I would.
