A Meaningful Addition to Southern Fiction
There are those writers who, having found what works, rewrite the same novel for the rest of their careers. David Whitman and Weston Ochse are not those writers. With the success of "Scary Rednecks and Other Inbred Horrors", the duo decided to team up once again for this much anticipated sequel. This collection is simply brillant. It's frightening and yet causes aching belly laughs, it makes you want to look away in horror and repulsion, but you simply cannot. The characters are warm, loyal, stupid, funny and surprisingly insightful. The depth and talent in these stories cannot be overlooked. If you buy this book you are not only guaranteed a good read but also a wild ride along the river of humanity.

Wild & Wacky Redneck Horror
These two maniacs read some of this book at the Horrorfind Convention in 2002 and had the audience on the floor in hysterics. Droll, witty, over-the-top black humor (and genuine scares) from two of the brightest new minds in genre fiction. "Scary Rednecks and Other Inbred Horrors" was black-humored and amusing, but this collection manages to outshine it. Not to be missed.

Mountain Men: The Male Photography of Don Whitman

A Necessary Part of History!
Don Whitman was the genius behind the Western Photography Guild taking male nude photography pictures in the outdoors from the late 40's to the early 60's. This was considered "The Golden Age of Bodybuilding." These are photos spanning this time period. A great collection of nude and non-nude photos of young men from the western states. Don's organization was based in Denver, Colorado. These are photos of rugged men, and also very handsome men. There are also couples featured together in various outdoor scenes. I especially enjoyed the photos on Page 51 and 52. There's a lost innocent in all these photos that you don't find today in male nude photography.

David Chapman gives a great introduction and history of Don Whitman and his life. This is another great male nude photography book helping to keep the history of that era of photography alive today. This would be a great addition to your collection.

Truly unique!
In search of true male eroticism, I stumbled upon this fascinating book of beautiful history and men...before body building and steriods. During a time when men where the real thing. The photography done by various artists, was indeed stunning, and simplistic. This is a gorgeous book filled with gorgeous men from a time period we have failed to appreciate in gay history. The men who posed for each other formed an intertwining family of artists, dancers, writers (gay, straight and bi) similar to the scene in Paris in the '20s. The pictures are well chosen and the text is easily read and adds immeasurably to the understanding of the pictures. A must have for anyone collecting books of the erotic arts.

Great Collection
This short story collection is an awesome addition to any horror fans library. The stories all involve southern folk in weird, sometimes scary and othertimes side-splittingly hilarious situations. The stories are a fast read, well-written, entertaining, and enlightening. David Whitman has a true gift for dialogue and dark comedy and is surely a rising star. I truly enjoyed the colleciton and know if you take a gamble, you won't be disappointed.

Lots of fun stuff in here!
This is a pretty unusual collection (I can't recall the last time I saw a collection dedicated to the folks from this often forgotten aspect of society) but well-deserving of notice for its eclectic flavor. Pick it up for some fine entertainment and a great addition to your collection of books.

The Essence of Walt Whitman
As we pass through another period in our history where unspeakable wars seem imminent, the great poets of the present and past draw focus, attempting to sound the alarm that might just possibly awaken us. And always chief among those poets who felt the folly and shame of war is Walt Whitman. So it is no wonder that collections of his poems re-surface and hopefully nourish a generation of young people who face the possibility of following the lifted sword.

Whitman's voice, in this collection from the Calamus poems, is turned toward a more personal declaration of intimacy between men rather than fist-shaking against war. In a beautifully designed and curated format, David Groff has selected poems that are enhanced by Richard Berman's selection of photographic images to allow the reader to listen more carefully to the thoughts of the master. Here we are not ask to weep as with "The Wound Dresser": here we celebrate the comradery and love between the living. The sensitive photographs are the contributions of John Dugdale, Mark Beard, Robert Flynt, Bill Jacobson, Russell Maynor, Frank Yamrus and Steve Morrison, and while none of these images is "illustrational", each embellishes the poetry in a way one believes Walt Whitman would mightily approve. A beautiful volume this.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE
Not only is this a book of beautiful photographs beautifully reproduced, it also has many of Walt Whitman's wonderful Calamus poems from his classic "Leaves of Grass."

The seven male, contemporary photographers represented in the book are all dealing in their images with the themes set forth in Whitman's poetry: loss, love of life and nature and mankind, death, love of man for man, loneliness, companionship, etc.: a man bathing in a tin tub in a John Dugdale cyanotype; two men embracing underwater in a mysterious Robert Flynt image; a man, stripped to the waist, standing alone staring at the camera, in what seems an old, empty house in the hand-colored photograph by Mark Beard; Russell Maynor's color Poloroid of a young, male nude---all of the 76 fascinating photographs in this small, perfectly put together volume deserve to be seen, seen again and shared.

And then, of course, there are always Whitman's magnificent words: "...Doubtless I could not have perceived the universe, or written one of my poems, if I had not freely given myself to comrades, to love." VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The name says it all
Great mix of robots in this book--some "standard" variations on familiar prototypes (using UBS parts) and some pretty out there ones as well that I would have never thought of. Excellent book. I've seen the RIS one that came before this but didn't buy it--I'm going to go back and get it now.

Simple and Stunning
The power of the word. The poem 'Walt Whitman Bathing' deserves a special Pulitzer Prize alone. Written a simple clauses, the poem is loaded with words that made me stop, think, and read on, again and again. Wagoner's arc in this collection is from childhood to old age. The words stayed the same. The context changed. And this is who we are. Give this book to someone as a gift. Gift. What a beautiful word. Wagoner. Another.

The Lost World should have stayed lost
This novel didn't appeal to me as much as the first Jurassic Park.Micheal Crihton should have left Ian Malcolm out of this story because any person who had suffered a life threatening experience like he had to face, would never go back to a similar place to Jurassic Park . The first novel had a plot which connected to everything in the story. This Novel was basically go to the Island, run from Dinosaurs, then escape from the Island. In the begining of the book Dinosaurs were being washed up on beaches in Costa Rica. The only reason they were going to go to the island was to see what was driving these creatures into the ocean. It never came out with why the dinosaurs were swimming from the island. There was some good action throughout the book . I was disappointed with this novel and that is why I only gave it 3 Stars.

Exciting Book; Keeps You Glued To Your Seat
The Lost World is even more exciting than Jurrasic Park. It has lots of twists and turns that should make you lose track of time and miss class. The main thing that made the book exciting is that it has missing links to the first book in the sequel.

I recomend this to anybody that likes blood and horrer.
Like i said before i recomend this book to anybody that likes blood and horrer,i saw the movie and it was scary but when i saw the book i was so amaized that i bought it and i read it over and over again and again.I think the book was better than the movie because they added more action and more of the scarry stuff and I know im going to read it again but i probibley wont right again but you can find another one of my coments in a book cald Desparete Persute,my name is JESSE GALINDO if you can find me.

A Quick and Entertaining Read
David Whitman's novella Deadfellas is an entertaining and quick read. This story is not really horror as in horror scary; it's more like a walk through a Twilight Zone-themed carnival funhouse ride. DeadFella's is character-rich with a fairly good plot, lots of bizarre action and tons of humor.

Fast Paced, Exciting, and Utterly Bizarre
David Whitman's Deadfellas is a book unlike any other book you'll ever read. Deadfellas is an intense roller coaster of a novel full of zombies and doubles and more action than a John Woo film. The characters are thrown into a bizarre series of events and are forced to react with utmost brutality, while still managing to maintain a dark sense of humor and the ability to laugh at the absurdity of life. Simply put: This book kicks ..., and you won't be disappointed.

Pulp Fiction meets Night of the Living Dead on LSD
A very fast paced and entertaining read. I had no idea Mr. Whitman even existed until I picked Deadfellas up at a horror convention. I have to say that this is one very bizarre piece of work. If you like zombies then this is your book. I am looking forward to the promised sequel.

Whitman Poetry Lovers only
If you are a Whitman poetry lover (or aspire to be), this is an interesting book. The author explores the manifold influences on Whitman's writing, from Opera to Phrenology (and all the other letters of the alphabet), and uses snippets of poetry to prove his points.

I had not explored Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" before reading this book, and was looking for a portrait of Whitman and his times, not a compilation of "influences," A to Z. In short, I found it dull. The author's writing style doesn't help either, which is straightforward at best, pedantic at worst ("No other biographer has noted...").

If you love Whitman's poetry, by all means buy and read this book. However, if you are looking for a more straightforward biography or a picture of America in the age of Whitman, you might look elswhere. Please, tell me what you find!

exhaustively researched , from an impartial biographer,
I found this work extremely entertaining. It was like being back in mid-19th century America. It seemed to make the era come alive with real personalities and real historical character. To understand the complexities of this genious and his time, this book is a must. It seemed to be refreshingly candid and forth-right without the usual bias one expects on the subject. There was much more to the man and his times than his sexuality. This book reveals the other sides of Walt Whitman. You can feel his pain with him as you share in his America

Walt Whitman As If He Really Walked on this Planet
Reynolds' Walt Whitman is a fellow who absorbed his culture, tried to save it, but finally sold himself to it. The other Whitman biographies I've read always had a scholarly ax to grind; this one seems, not to cut away Walt Whitman to a one dimensional person, but to find Walt Whitman living a multi-dimensional life in an urbanizing, industrializing, upwardly literate American society. I thorougly enjoyed the chapters on mid-century American Culture; but was looking for an itinerary of hospital visits that Whitman made. It appears that the author appropriately limited himself to what Whitman reported of his own activity as a hospital nurse and to what few recollections of patients.
