Superb overview of the history of process thought.
David Ray Griffin's essay on Hartshorne is more than worth the price of the book all by itself.

Shadows of the Heart: A Spirituality of Our Painful Emotions

Amazon base price: $17.95

A refreshing look at the spiritual side of anger.
I am 51 years old and a full time psychology student. I feel that I have been on a spiritual journey most of my life, trying to solve the mystery of life, and the Whiteheads had just added a big piece to the puzzle.

I have been given a whole new perspective on the painful emotions, ones that most of us find very difficult to deal with - shame, anger and guilt. I feel that I now have a constructive base from which to deal with these emotions from a spiritual dimension.

Excellent book for anyone seeking to heal their psyche and their soul.

A great book of folklore-for both children and adults
James Thor Whitehead is a young boy living in Carter County, Tennessee and growing up with his family's tradition of storytelling. All his life, he has listened to this father's tales about the famous tiger that roams the mountains and valleys of East Tennessee. Thor believes that these stories are true and fears that this legendary beast will one day hunt him down and eat him. Eventually Thor learns of the real "Tennessee Tiger" who was legendary for his killing of 99 bears in his lifetime and the sparing of the 100th bear's life. A combination of folklore and mythology make this book a must. This book should be enjoyed by children of all ages and adults alike. It is especially meaningful when read together as a family. My child enjoys hearing this story over and over again. The colorful pictures are quite unique and very well done. I highly recommend this book!!

Joiner

Ulyses meets Semi-Tough
The narrator in "Joiner" is a former professional football player with a photographic memory and an obsession with history. Writing after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Joiner has already survived childhood tragedy, violence (others' and his own) betrayal, divorce and self-destructiveness, not to mention a decade or more "under the helmet." Joiner is also chaotically and unapologetically erudite, as likely to analogize a violent confrontation to lager forts as he is to a perfect block.

The book divides itself between moments in his childhood and adolescence, and telling (without explaining) how a self-confessed "neck" grew up and came out as a man who loved, and finally would fight, for his black neighbors. Much of this is free association as events in Joiner's history and the world's pass through his thoughts. Ultimately the book is about decency, often unsuspected, and ends with more acceptance and peace than you ever would! have hoped Joiner would know.

Highly recommended.

Gourmet Banquet for Mind and Heart
A good read, but a superior study. What is lacking in many ministries is the development of experience as well as theology. I was assigned to review this book by our RCIA director. My recommendation is to provide it for each member of the team. This book provides a METHOD of practicing ministry that is inclusive of the community, your personal experience, and tradition rather than simply a "preaching" from above. Each chapter is like a different course of a grand banquet; different texture, taste, and purpose. It deserves your finest wine. Bring the commitment of your very blood and be strengthened. By desert, you are ready to seek out a ministry for yourself.
