Superlative introduction to submarine life & WW2 Warfare
There is little I can add to the previous reviewers' coments in praise of this terrific little book - all of their comments are precisely right on the money. I, too, read this book at the age of nine and it led to a life-long interest in the boats and my own service in ballistic missile submarines circa 1980. Oddly enough, the atmosphere of cameraderie and professionalism White portrays in his book turned out to be a surprisingly accurate reflection of actual submarine life, albeit cleaned up for a more innocent audience. In spite of a couple of technical errors (which really don't detract at all from its strong points), I can't recommend it enough.

Up Periscope has elements similar to The Survivor...
but they are definitely two separate books.

Both are highly enjoyable.

Up Periscope has a somewhat different perspective, in that it portrays a little bit more of what life on board a WW2 diesel boat in the Pacific Theatre was like. Readers who enjoy this aspect of the book would also doubtless enjoy 'Run Silent, Run Deep,' by Capt. Edward Beach.

Robb White had the gift of economy of words. With a very few short sentences, he is able to evoke powerful feelings and emotions. His books truly set the standard in the 'coming of age' style of books in the 60's.

We need more writers like him.

His wife, Annie White, runs a publishing company in LA. Her only purpose is to get more of his books back into print. So far, she has succeded with just the two books currently available- 'Deathwatch,' and 'Lions Paw.' Lets hope she gets more out soon.

There are a lot of kids who would benefit from reading these books.

Another Robb White Classic
Like many people of my generation, I encountered the classic adventure novels of Robb White in the early 1960s. Children's novels??? I'm 41 now and I still don't see it. White's tales of straightforward courage and selflessness are better than most "adult" fiction I read nowadays. UP PERISCOPE is one of his best story's, and, in case no one remembers, was made into a competent little war movie of the same name in the late 50s starring a young James Garner. Great book, as are all White's heartfelt WWII-era tales. Like the rest of Robb White's legions of fans, most of whom were Eisenhower-era kids when they read him, I'll never forget his wonderful, wonderful stories. I guess that's as close to immortality as a man can get.

Mark Twain with Salt
In this slim but tugid volume, Robb White, heretofor known only to a narrow audience of small-boat nuts, introduces the wide world to his native waters, the Florida Gulf Coast, just like Mark Twain did for his, the Mississippi. This is no idle comparison: Like Twain, he has played with and piloted all kinds of boats upon his waters, met all life's characters there, and kept his eyes wide open all the time. If you think his language can't be as pungent, his characers as rich, his stories as deceptively simple -- well, don't judge till you read him. Then you might agree, Huck Finn ain't got nuthin' on ol' Robb White.

Quality, rightness and virtue: the wildman's revenge!
Robb White writes of his wild childhood and wild boating life. And he gets away with it because he's so good! This is candid, uproarious writing of the best sort. It's specific. And you know he knows what he's talking about because he's been there. What a tonic! His work reminds me of Jack Saunders. : ) --A fellow folk writer who hasn't gotten his break yet. Robb's is rough'n'tumble family storytelling, yet it's gentle. It's personal...and it's general. Just the right stuff. More! ...OK, I have to let the cat out of the bag: if you want more, subscribe to the thrifty, friendly little magazine "Messing About In Boats" right now. Robb has been writing biweekly columns for it for years now. What great good times! And fiesty, helpful boating (and living) info, too. (Did you know that Robb is the world's best bass fisherman? He'll tell you why sometime...)

Glorious, Joyful,Brilliant Storytelling
You will not want to put it down, and Mr. white will leave you wanting much more! A brillient storyteller with a touch of Mark Twain and Will Rogers, but contempory and better!!!
Share the laughter and joy, give this book to someone, be careful, you may not get it back.
You can not, not like it!

The book that started me on a lifetime of reading
When I was about twelve years of age, I read this book as the first real book I had ever read. I loved it. The story concerns some kids who seek an underwater treasure, the result of a shipwreck centuries ago. There are also some bad guys after the treasure. I just ordered this book (which I haven't seen in thirty years) to read to my children. After I finished this book, I read as many Robb White books as I could find and then branched out into other types of books. This is the book that started me on a lifetime of reading. I gave it five stars because of its effect on my life. I fear it may not be as good as I remember and, beware, it is not politically correct; i.e., it is violent and portrays violence in pursuit of a good purpose as good. Although I originally found this book in school and read it with the encouragment of my teachers, this book would not be allowed in public schools today.

My favorite childhood book!
The Lion's Paw was read, one chapter daily, to my fifth grade class in the 1960's. What a treasured memory! I, too, would like to know if Robb White is still living and writing. I've loaned this book to every child I know, but now will start giving them copies of their own. Thank you, Robb White, for a wonderful adventure!

Set my sails
The Lion's Paw was read to my fourth grade class at North mi Elementary School and I re-read it several times. What a great story! My parents took the family all over South Florida so I had the wonderful shock of finding that Sanibel Island, Lake Okechobee and the Calusahatchee River were REAL PLACES! I grew up in the Boy Scouts canoeing all these places and now have a kayak tour business in the Everglades and the Bahamas (ibistours.com). My Dad and I built a wooden, sailing, pram while I was in elementary school, and I had many great years of sailing and paddling it. I have spent a lifetime on the water and I am still drawn back to the magical scenes from the Lion's Paw. After my father died, I had a dream of walking the beach at Sanibal looking for the Lion's Paw that would bring him back. In all my years of walking beaches with my head down, I still have not found the elucive shell. Cannot think of a better book to encourage children to be couragous and self reliant. It would make a great movie.

Great book. Can't wait to get a cy for my 9yr old daughter!
I was amazed to see so many reviews on this book! I also read this as a kid and never forgot the great story. I have looked for it off and on for years, especially so my young daughter could read it since she loves adventures. Now finally I found it here on Amazon.com! I remember how the brother and sister only got to read the orphanage sign backwards, "EGANAHPRO", because they never saw it from outside the fence... and their sailboat adventures looking for the Lion's Paw and their missing dad. I grew up in S Fla and remember looking for the shell on Sanibel Island. Can't wait to let my daughter read it. I should get a copy for her school's library! It is one of two books I realllly remembered as a kid. The other, "Rifles for Watie", a civil war classic about a boy who goes off to be a Union drummer boy, is also back out now, in paperback.

Deathwatch Review
The book starts out with a review of the current situation. Madec and Ben are in the desert hunting for bighorn sheep. Ben is like a desert guide to Madec. Madec was luckily drawn from a list of many hunters. He has a week to shoot one bighorn sheep to add to his collection of animal trophies. Madec accidently shoots an old prospector in some bushes and tries to cover his mistake up. When Ben makes the upsetting discovery he insists on taking the man to the police. Madec, thinking he will be sent to jail, opposes Ben's decision. He tricks Ben into giving him his gun. Once he has Ben's gun he makes him take off all of his clothes. He makes him walk through the desert with no food, water, or clothes, his protection from the sun. He hunts Ben out and tries to make sure Ben doesn't reach town. Who will win this battle of survival? Ben always thought he could survive in the desert under this situation. Was he right?
Deathwatch is a book inflicting the theme of survival into its readers. Opinions may vary about this book because of its strong plot sequence. Throughout the majority of this book the author concentrates solely on the story taking place. The most significant theme of the entire book is survival. What caused this book to seem boring and irritable is its lack of main characters. Until the very end there are only two main characters. Then suddenly towards the end a lot of new characters are introduced for a short time. The prime moment of the book is the ending. The end of the story has an interesting and amusing twist. The downfall of the book is the long delay in the middle. About midway through the book the author goes off into a long scientific description of a butte. That lost most of the readers' attention. This book could've been greatly improved if the author would've dropped the scientific descriptions and added more exhilaration to the chase.

Deprived in the Desert
Deathwatch tells the story of a young man named Ben who assists a bighorn hunter by the name of Madec. The beginning of the trip was going fine until Madec accidently shoots an unknown prospector and kills him. He then becomes afraid because Ben wants to tell someone what happened. Madec gets angry and turns on Ben. He makes Ben take of his clothes and takes away his gun, therefore giving him a slim chance of survival. Except with Ben's will to live and clever desert skills, he is able to outsmart Madec. He gains control of the jeep and Madec, then heads toward home. Ben didn't take into account that Madec would tell his own story of how the prospector was shot and the explanation of what happened. Little did he know about the troubles he would face once getting home.
I think Deathwatch was intriguing. The good things about the book were that most of the time it would keep me interested in finding out what would happen next. Robb White definately did a good job at keeping readers wondering if Ben would survive. He also made me wonder how a man like Madec could be so cruel to Ben. The flaws of the book were that the description of the desert, in my opinion, was excessive. The descriptions were also hard to follow and picture. Another flaw was the fact that Ben seemed perfect and was too kind to even testify against Madec for what he'd done to him. Even though, the book was captivating and kept me curious.

Survival is easy for DeathWatch, in this killer thriller!
Ben is a college student who desperately needs money to go to college and get a good education. To get the money he needs he has to assist a cold hearted man named Madec in shooting bighorn sheep in the harsh desert. Ben tries to remain calm and keep his cool through Madec's temper and rage. All seems to be going pretty well, except when Madec causes an accident that never should have happened . Ben is blamed for the accident(which you will find out later, I don't want to ruin the book), and is caught in playing a deadly game in which he has to survive and fight to live. Wondering if Ben would survive kept me reading and turning the pages, wondering what would happen next. The details are very well written and the two characters are very different and have their own personalities which makes the book very interesting. The suspense will keep you reading this book, and if you like survival books, like the Hatchet by Gary Paulsen(which I also recommend) I would recommend this book. It certainly kept me on my toes to the very last page.

Great Oregon Boating Reference Book
Paddling Oregon -along with Soggy Sneakers- are the two definative guide books about Oregon boating.

Paddling Oregon has a well-organized desciption of multiple runs of 92 different rivers. Included in each overview is information about the character, location, gradient, class and skill level and a list of appropriate craft for the run. Information about potential shuttle sources is also included.

Paddling Oregon is a comfortable format and easy-to-read narrative which provides great details and provides a good feel for the river.

The one criticism I have is the book fails to provide useful maps for use on the river.

Delightful read!
Two on the Isle by Robb White, was a real joy to read.I have been to Marina Cay 3 times and always have been amaized by it's beauty. Robb and Rodie had a paradise there on the Island, but the story of their hard labor and determination of building their home there is one of courage not seen by many today. And then! to find their deed was never excepted by the BVI government was a shock. It had to have been heart breaking to give up their island. Then again I guess Rodie was happy after all to be back in her home town in Georgia USA. I was saddened by that as well as the fact they did not remain together....
