A Family Story Told With Much Love
SQUIRE'S LEGACY is a story told with so much love of the author's family. It is a true story that any of us who have grown up in the mining communities of West Virginia in the 30's,40's and 50's can relate to in many ways. When I started reading this book,it touched my heart like no other. I read this book aloud to my husband. Being a native New Yorker, I knew he might not relate to the book as I did,and I wanted hime to know what my life was like growing up in southern West Virginia during that time. We were both held captive by this book, from beginning to end. We laughed together and cried together at their joys and their tragedies. In this book, the authors JAMES AND ELLIE WHITE have caught the very essence of what family is all about. Theirs is truly a love story told with much love and tenderness.

The Life and Struggles of Clifford Earl White
Many have tried to portray the lives of the coal camps and the trials the people endured. This one succeeds highly.
I was the young boy who lost his father in a coal mine accident and knew Clifford and Ethel very well. Jim shows a
keen and accurate memory on these events and Ellies "editing" and writing are superb. They are to be congratulated. It has been said that someone is not really dead until they are forgotten. Jim and Ellie have assured Clifford and Ethel will not be forgotten for many years.

Just Like Home!
My husband and I grew up in the same area as portrayed in this book. We felt the honesty, storytelling, and details of the lives mentioned were just like we remembered. We laughed, and cried and wished others would read and apply the values taught in this book. It reminded us of hard times, hard work, the love and lessons we grew up experiencing. We would recommend this book to any and all who long to be inspired.

'A Practical Guide to Producing and Harvesting White Tailed
This is one of the best books I have ever read on white tailed deer. Full of great information for both hunters and managers. Any serious hunter should have this book. I spent many weeks sourcing a copy of this book book and it was well worth the effort. I hope for the sake of the rest of you out their that this book goes back into print.

A Must Have For The Serious Whitetail Hunter
Dr. Kroll is considered one of the foremost whitetail experts in the nation and provides practical, well researched advise in a well thought out and entertaining manner. This is not a book that provides short-cuts on how to bag a monster in three easy steps but instead a book that will provide the tools to be a better hunter and manager. You will simply not find a better book on the subject. As a side note, Dr. Kroll heads the Whitetail Institute for Sthphen F. Austin University in Texas and they may be a source for those of you who have had a difficult time locating the book.

Short, simple, says what it needs to...
J.E.White does an incredible job of weaving stories and Truth together to crank out a work that is both readable and enlightening...

A great book in a few cases...

1) If you are a Christ-follower and have a friend who has questions... and you're not sure where to go for answers... they are very accesible in this book.

2) If you have a friend who would read it... who is searching Truth themselves... Buy them the book (and you read it, too, so that you can discuss the concepts).

3) If you are seeking Truth... Definitely a good one to read. I know, there's a lot of stuff out there that's out of balance, or hard to wade through... not so here.

An Excellent introductory apologetics - great for seekers!
I stumbled across this book a year ago at a thrift store. I had been out of the faith for 18 years, and this helped me immensely get past many of the misconceptions I had from my youth. It was as though this was written exclusively for my life and thoughts.

I now give away this book to seekers or potential seekers. Its size isn't daunting, but gives an excellent overview of many of the most stifling objections to Christianity. It starts out, appropriately, setting the mindset for the reader to read and explore the contents with an open mind. Many stories and biblical references, as well as references to other resources.
With this, I was able to look at my spiritual journey anew, was open enough to find a church that satisfied my adult need for spiritual growth (even though completely different than the denomination of my youth) and now even my wife had accepted Jesus as her Lord.

I wish I had read something like this 15 years ago
This answers many of those nagging questions that we use for excuses for not really examining our faith.

What about evolution? Is the Bible really credible? Why is there so much suffering? Aren't all religions essentially the same? Why do Christians commit sin? Why do Christians seem so strange?

These are the sorts of questions that get answered. I wish I had read this as a teenager.

I would recommend giving this book to anyone who needs help getting over these common hurdles that keep us from the Christian faith.

Science Fiction Can Be Fun
"The Galactic Gourmet" is part of James White's "Sector General" series that all take place in an enormous hospital ship/space station. In this story, an intergalactic master chef named Gurronsevas, who is at least moderately egotistical, has grown tired of catering to rich customers in high-class restaurants and hotels. As a challenge to his skills, he signs on as the Head Dietician at Sector General, where he will have to turn hospital food into something edible, while catering to dozens of different intelligence species with differing food requirements and tastes. Not all goes well at first, and at least one near-disaster occurs. However, Gurronsevas redeems himself by solving the mystery behind a station-wide epidemic.

James White and Sector General always make good reading, with good writing technically, well-developed alien and human characters, and a fascinating setting. I would have liked to give this story 4.5 stars, as it is not quite as deep as "The Watch Below" or "The Genocidal Healer", but "The Galactic Gourmet is good, fun, science fiction reading.

James White Does It Again
In the third latest edition to the ever popular Sector General Series a well know federation chef arrives at the hospital, and chaos ensues. When he chef is banned from the station a series of events happen that save a race from extiction and Cheif Dietician Gurronsevas, as he is better know now, is, well... you'll have to read this excelent book to find out.

Another great "First Contact" novel
Once again James White gives us a novel where we see the action through the eyes of an interesting alien character, Gurronsevas, the great gourmet chef. As with Lorien in *The Genocidal Healer*, Gurronsevas is allowed to learn and grow -- always to be welcomed in fiction. I've read all the previous Sector General books I love the fact that the aliens are fully people in their own right and humans don't always hog the limelight. The official reviews are correct about the humor. (The exchange two aliens have over an old human saying cracked me up.) I really enjoyed reading about Gurronsevas' role in the first contact situation and the people he tried to help. I did have one minor problem with the book, though: it was too easy to figure out what was going on (although there were a couple of things I didn't see coming). However, I'm 44 years old and I have over 30 years' experience reading SF and mysteries. Even if you're another "old" fan, don't worry. The book is well worth your time even when you're mildly irritated at the characters for taking so long to catch on. Ann E. Nichols

Hospital Station

1st volume of the series: 5 short stories
The earlier volumes of the series were collections of stories written for magazines, but as the publishing world altered over time, the emphasis changed to full-length novels. A new reader can begin at any point, since White is careful to fill in the background, often via an explanation delivered to a new trainee, visitor, or Monitor Corps pilot. This book is part of the omnibus edition _Beginning Operations_.

"Medic" - One of the earliest entries in the series in terms of internal chronology; *the* earliest is the first story in the collection _Sector General_, describing how the hospital came to be founded, while this story relates how O'Mara, a member of the hospital's original construction crew, wound up looking after the hospital's first patient. In later years, O'Mara sealed the file on this story, but couldn't completely hush it up no matter how hard he tried. :) If you're curious about how O'Mara evolved into the gruff personality we know best, read _Mind Changer_.

"Sector General" - Not to be confused with the short story collection of the same name, which is in the omnibus edition _Alien Emergencies_. Conway makes his first appearance as the viewpoint character, a position he occupied until the conclusion of _Star Healer_. He's only been at Sector General for 2 months, and as an ardent pacifist deeply resents the Monitor Corps, when in an emergency he gets his first dose of an Educator tape, and the resulting problems land him his first real meeting with Chief Psychologist O'Mara. Then his first ship rescue assignment confronts him with a fear-maddened entity, who (having killed Carmody, the gentle Padre of the psychology department) brings Conway face-to-face with a kill-or-be-killed situation. (See _The Genocidal Healer_ for further discussion of Carmody's role in the psychology department.)

"Trouble with Emily" - Dr. Arratepec, distinguished member of a newly discovered telepathic species, has convinced its people and the Galactic Federation government to give all assistance to a classified project involving a brontosaur-like creature that its human handlers have nicknamed Emily. (Yes, it's a very bad pun.) Emily's species is facing extinction on a planet without intelligent life, although Emily itself is healthy. What is Arratepec up to, and how can Conway assist when Arratepec won't confide in him? (Incidentally, the I-have-no-time-for-women attitude disappeared rapidly when Conway met nurse, later Pathologist, Murchison.)

"Visitor at Large" - Marks the first appearance of Prilicla as Conway's brand-new assistant. The visitor in question is a giant amoeba, who (as the youngest offspring of Sector General's most troublesome patient) is being allowed a deathbed visit. The patient has nothing organically wrong with it, but is quietly dissolving into water, apparently due to some psychological problem that the doctors simply can't treat. Then the hospital rapidly acquires a second problem, as the young visitor panics at the sight of all the aliens and takes flight into the depths of the hospital.

"Outpatient" - Marked by Conway's promotion to Senior Physician and subsequent assumption of one or two permanent Educator tapes. (Diagnosticians aren't the only physicians to permanently carry tapes; they're distinguished by the *quantity* of permanent alter egos they carry.) The outpatient case is the sole survivor of an alien ambulance ship, of a previously unknown species (seen later in the series as the Ians). Conway's inexplicable course of treatment, which he refuses to justify until the end of the story, lands him in serious hot water in this one.

Incidentally, when O'Mara remarks that despite Conway's promotion, he wouldn't trust him with his appendix, the fact emerges that O'Mara's appendix was saved by the surgeon who took it out, and now (pickled) serves as a hospital chess trophy. :)

IRRELEVANT NOTE: The old Ballantine DelRey paperback edition's cover art consisted of a view of Emily during the more successful phase of Arratepec's experiments, with Conway as a small figure in the foreground.

A Classic SF Series
A must-read series for all science fiction fans, the Sector General novels have been described as a cross between Star Trek and ER. I began reading these books as a kid and I still love reading them today. They are great examples of what multiculturalism and interracial tolerance are supposed to be! One of my favorite characters is Prilicla the tiny insectoid empath, always having to dodge the huge aliens around her, both physically and emotionally. There are over a dozen books in the series, many of them out of print, but they are worth your time if you can find them all.

What a Launching!
General: "Hospital Station" is actually a collection of short stories that inaugurated or launched a series of novels by James White about a huge, inter-species hospital space station called Sector General. Sector General is staffed by a variety of different intelligent species, including humans, and treats the hardest cases from all over the galaxy. White seems to delight in generating as varied a population as possible for this ship, and gives great detail about the different physical forms seen in the staff, along with their eating habits, social habits, mating habits (in a very PG, if not G-rated way), and cultural beliefs.

Specific: In one story, an intelligent but brawny construction worker, O'Mara, gets stuck nursing an injured and orphaned alien baby back to health, as Sector General is under construction. He thereby heals the hospitals first patient, and begins his climb to the position of Chief Psychologist (and unofficial Personnel Manager) of Sector General. The other stories deal with Conway, who starts off by being a naive but up-and-coming young doctor who assists a visiting physician in helping an alien brontosaurus learn teleportation and thereby survive an upcoming ice age on its home planet; he tracks down a juvenile shape-changer who is frantically running amok in the hospital; he (eventually) correctly diagnoses a member of a new-found alien species as not having lethal cancer but instead . . well, I won't give that ending away.

Technical: James Whites writes with great pace, simple dialogue, good character development, and frequent light humor, while tackling fairly complex plots and issues. While "Hospital Station" is not the best in the series (I would give that honorific to "The Genocidal Healer"), it is a great introduction to a very enjoyable series of books that spanned several decades.

A book for all lovers of art
When I saw this book I was blown away by the range and quality of the work in it. As soon as I was back at my computer, I purchased a copy for my sister who does botanical illustration. She too was very impressed with it. You cannot go wrong buying this book if you enjoy a) art; b) botanical illustration, or; c) all things beautiful.

A must-have for botanical artists
Have recommended this book to other botanical artists and every one who sees it has purchased it. Full of exquisitely rendered specimens in many different styles of botanical painting. Gives some background on each of the artists, but the real feature is the large reproductions of the art work. An excellent reference book for painters and a beautiful book to display. Don't miss this one!

An absolute stunner of a book!
This is a book of dazzling beauty. The first time that I read it I had to keep trying to remember to breath! This is not a how-to book but a WOW! book. The range and quality of the illustrations is astounding, particularly in view of the large number of pictures and the comparatively low price

Manual of Prayers - A truly wonderful book
After purchasing the Manual of Prayers, I found my prayer life had greatly improved. I have been greatly blessed by it. It comes leather bound in 2 colors, black and burgundy. It was such a blessing fort me that I had to get one for a friend. It is good for those who have a hard time praying. It makes it easier to start a prayer or gives one ideas on how to pray. It is a wonderful book that is nothing short of priceless.

A needed prayer book for priests and all Catholics
As a priest recently returned from Rome after two years of graduate study at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum), who lived and prayed at the Pontifical North American College Casa Santa Maria, I can recommend no finer book of prayers for priests and lay Catholics.

Prayer is essential in the life of every person. Catholics have read the Scriptures, worshipped God in the sacrifice of the Mass, prayed the Rosary and the Stations of the Cross, used the psalms to pray and sing, and have used many other prayer forms for nearly 2000 years. Prayer is essential!

The Manual of Prayers continues this tradition. The need to bring forth from our storehouse the greatest of Catholic treasures combines with the need to compose beautiful prayers suited for today. The depth and scope of its scholarship, its fidelity to the faith, and the beauty of its prayers fill the need today for a prayer book in the Catholic tradition. Beautifully presented, made to last, portable and complete, the Manual of Prayers is one to treasure and use every day of one's life.

The most wonderful and complete prayer book ever!
My priest introduced me to this prayer book. As a cradle catholic of 40 plus years I am truly blessed to own a copy. It contains basic Catholic prayers, novenas, prayers for various needs and also has the Latin form of prayers. It is beautifully bound in black leather, gilded page edges, 2 ribbon markers, and a handy case to keep it in. It is truly heirloom quality. Will make a great gift for cradle catholics as well as converts. Originally written for the students of the Pontifical North American College. A must have for all Catholics.

In The Trenches by Reggie White
I found this book very interesting I learned a lot about Reggie White. I wish that he was still with the Green Bay Packers. I am a huge Green Bay Packer fan. This book had a lot of interesting stuff in it. For example I never knew that one of his favorite players growing up was O.J. Simpson. Reggie said in the book that O.J. Simpson was like a moving target for defensive linemen; he said, that was one of the reasons that he wanted to play defensive end. I also learned that he really liked his coach Buddy Ryan when he played with the Philadelphia Eagles ,and when Buddy Ryan got fired Reggie couldn't figure out why he got fired; he said Buddy Ryan was a good coach. Reggie also talked about his church getting burned. He also talked about his friend and teammate Jerome Brown who was killed a car accident and he thought he was a really great person and he said he misses him. I learned a lot from reading this book. This book is one of my favorite books that I read. I would recommend this book to every Green Bay Packer fan.

Exciting, well written book; could use some more chapters
This was a great book because it shared with me how profesesional athletes deal with the same things that us normal, every day Joe-Schmoes have to deal with. It was interesting how he dealed with his church getting burned down and how he was frustrated with the authorities, just as I am.

Great Book
really awesome book, cool pics in the middle!! exciting life to read about. im a big GB fan, ad was sad when he retired, but am constantly impressed by his faith. God bless Reggie!!

PS im glad u finally got a superbowl !!!

Peter Pan is a good book for kids and adults alike.
Peter Pan is a good adventure/fantasy that kids and adults can enjoy alike. With much exaggeration, it is something kids can enjoy and read into. It's a page-turning book that once you started you can't stop.

A Little Scary!
This isn't like the Disney movie! I loved this book but at the same time I was shocked by the violence of the fighting between Hook and the Lost Boys and the Indians. I don't think I'll be reading this one to my nephews and neices, not until I have edited out the violent bits. It wasn't that In-Your-Face violence of the Hollywood movies, it was more insinuated and there was definetly a menacing atmosphere surrounding Wendy's, Peter's and Michael's adventures in Never Never Land. I do recommend it though, just not for easily frightened youngsters. This is definetly in need of a PG rating on the cover. PARENTS: This is no Disney Peter Pan!

My daughter loves this Peter Pan.
My 10 year old daughter found this book in the school library. She read it one weekend and has checked it out several times. The classic story along with the beautiful illustrations by Eric Kincaid have made this one of her favorite books. When I surprised her with her own copy that I had found on Amazon she was thrilled and commented on it's excellent condition.

The Little White Bird or Adventures in Kensington Gardens: Or, Adventures in Kensington Gardens
Published in Hardcover by Aperture (1977)
Author: James M Barrie
Amazon base price: $25.00
Average review score:

Bittersweet
I disagree with the reviewer who states that the Captain is interetsed only in the little boy; he is being sarcastic when repeatedly argues that he is *not* attracted to the mother. Indeed, his relationship began with the family *before* the child had been born. Yes, there are sexual undertones to his relationship with the boy, but Barrie seems to imbue much of his descriptions of beauty with some subtle and sometime not-so-subtle eroticism (the blue-skinned fairy women, for example). What the Captain wants most, it seems, is the family - the 'total package', but he still yearns for his 'lost love'.

Great book!
Though it is the story of a captain that befriends a boy, it is really James Barries way of describing his relationship with a young boy named George Llewelyn Davies and his mother Sophia Llewelyn Davies.

Worthwhile book, but quite strange to modern eyes
[A] previous reviewer states: "It is the story of a man who mentors a little boy and during that has a love interest with a woman."

There is no interest in the woman in the slightest! Indeed the author states explicitly at the beginning how tiresome it is to be persued by her. He loves the boy only. Amazing that this was a best-seller and world famous in its day - a wonderful book, but you can't help thinking that if published in 1999 it would be confined only to the mail-order book list of NAMBLA, as the old bachelor even baths and sleeps with the boy! It's available online..., as are Arthur Rackham's wonderful illustrations for the Peter Pan sections (it contains an inner story which is a very early version of Barrie's "Peter Pan".
