Joe White's advise is always on target!
Dr. Joe White is one of the most, if not the most respected horticulturist in the state of Louisiana. His advice is always on target and the book would make a great addition to any home library.

A wonderful reminder of childhood memories and gardening
I received this book as a birthday gift and haven't been able to put it down. It evoked childhood memories of Sasanquas in bowls, spider lillies in beloved friends' yards, and laughter at funny names like "Grancy Graybeard." I remembered a gigantic yellow Lady Banksea rose that grew so large it took over the roof of my playhouse. Thanks for the memories and helpful advice. Even my grandfather the masterful gardener would approve.

The best of its kind on this topic!
Anyone wishing to garden in Louisiana's unique environment should consult this guide. Organized by plant type, it is easy use for species identification, planting instructions, and care tips.

Refer to this guide before purchasing plants and again when doing garden maintenance.

Bowhunting's Whitetail Masters: The Techniques, Secrets and Successes of the Most Skilled Whitetail Bowhunters in America
Published in Hardcover by Envisage Unlimited (1992)
Author: Dan Bertalan
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

The Master's Art
This is not the typical deer hunting how-to manual. Bertalan goes far beyond the world of 300 yard rifle shots and endorsement-ridden outdoor magazine articles as he explores how twelve master bowhunters operate inside that zone of extreme intensity the surrounds the trophy whitetail buck, where a hunter's single stray movement or the most subtle shift in breeze can end a season. Those of us who have bowhunted across North America and beyond know that the hunter who consistently, year in and year out, bags a trophy whitetail buck with bow and arrow, can stand up against any hunter, anywhere, from any species, past or present. Bertalan does a great job in this book as he tells the story of each master hunter. Through these stories, the reader comes to know the approaches, philosophies, and techniques that these hunters have used to take craft to the level of fine art. Bowhunting's Whitetail Masters is for hard-core, dedicated, veteran bowhunters. If you consider yourself to be one, you owe it to yourself to read it. Let Bertalan show you what it takes to be great.

The Masters' Art
This is not your typical how-to deer hunting manual. You won't find step-by-step instructions, equipment lists, endless endorsements, etc. What you will find is a book of incredibly detailed non-fiction hunting stories. The stories chronicle how twelve master bowmen have transformed whitetail hunting from craft to art. Only by reading the stories do you come to understand each hunter's individual approach, technique, and philosophy. Only by reading the stories do you learn. This book is for hard-core, devoted, veteran bowhunters, because it endeavors to move far beyond the tired "Here's where you should put your treestand" formula so frequently rehashed in outdoor magazines and manuals. Those of us who have bowhunted across North America and beyond know that bowhunters who year in and year out kill trophy class whitetail bucks can hold their own with any hunter, anywhere, from any species, past or present. Such hunters are predators who have developed rare skill.

Bowhunting's Whitetail Masters takes you far away from the 300 yard rifle shots and places you inside that zone where a hunter's smallest stray movement or the slightest shift in breeze can make all the difference. I myself find it intoxicating to read about how exceptionally skilled hunters navigate and operate within this zone to become what they are: whitetail masters. Bertalan has done a great job.

Excellent Journal of 1880's travel through the Adirondacks
This is a compilation of stories written by George Washington Sears (a.k.a. Nessmuk) for Forest and Stream Magazine in the years 1880-1883. He paddled different custom built ultralight Rushton canoes each year, starting south of present day Old Forge, through the Fulton Chain to Raquette and reaching as far as Long Lake, Little Tupper Lake and beyond. His chronicles are enjoyable, easily readable tales of life and travel in the wilderness of the 1880's Adirondacks. It is full of details which are interesting to the student of Adirondack history. For instance, he allowed me to pinpoint the year of construction of the Grove Hotel (later known as the Deerland Hotel) on Long Lake, and to give me background on it's original owner.

A gem to rank alongside "When Cats Dream" and "Stellaluna."
Review of "The Legend of the Flying Hotdog," by Celeste White and Dan Lane
It's a shame the publishers allowed this children's book to go out of print, for it's a gem to rank alongside Dav Pilkey's "When Cats Dream" and Janell Cannon's "Stellaluna." The flying hotdog of the title is an animal -- a former weasel who one day sprouts "wings of pure malice" and thereafter amuses himself by stealing mittens from unsuspecting children. Then one day, he swoops down upon a little boy named Patrick, but Patrick's mother has tethered his mittens to his coat, so the hotdog ends up taking the boy home with him to the Never Summer Mountains of Colorado... The book is full of subtle humor, making it a joy to read. But I especially liked the way Patrick wins over his captor by being KIND -- not by trying to outsmart or trick him. This book gives the reader three wonderful things: an engrossing tale, a hero worthy of emulation, and something to think about. I for one will never look at a lost (or found) mitten the same way again. Celeste White has succeeded in writing a modern folktale. And Dan Lane's color illustrations are absolutely charming.

The Smart Take from the Strong: The Basketball Philosophy of Pete Carril
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (1997)

Amazon base price: $21.00

The Smart Take from the Strong (Carril)
This book is a great look at the "Yoda" of college hoops. Carril's biography is a good look at a blue collar coach who got the absolute most from his players. He reveals no "mysteries" of the game-he stresses hard work around a solid philosophy. It is NOT an X and O book-don't buy it for that reason. It is a great basketball philosophy book. If you love the college game and the personalities that coach in it, buy this book.

Great Coach! One Fantastic book!!
I am not a fan of the Princeton Tigers but a Wisconsin Badger basketball fan, Pete Carril is a tough, tenacious basketball coach who beleived in certain principles that went beyond the game of basketball. These principles gained the trust and confidence of his players. Which explains why he was able to coach basketball for so long in an age defined by "image over substance"... shoe contracts, commercials, etc. I wish that I could have played for a coach like this.

Great information for any coach at any level!
This book had a lot of common sense information about the game of basketball. To build a program you have to work on developing a complete player. Coach Carril is correct in stating that fundamentals are what's important and adapting every drill to what will happen in a game. I really enjoyed this book because of the no nonsense approach he has to the game and because he was always able to get the most out of his players. Great book!!

GREAT BOOK. READ IT!!!
This great science-fiction novel is a real thriller to any reader. It captures you in the timeless adventure of the Black Sox Scandal of 1919. Joe Stoshack is just an ordinary kid, until he realizes that he has an amazing power -- the ability to travel through time! His ticket to the past, a simple baseball card from the year he wishes to travel. Joe Jackson and the Chicago White Sox look to be big favorites to win the World Series against Cincinnati, but a few gamblers have different plans. The gamblers "fix" the World Series. Which results in Joe Jackson (and seven other players) being banned from baseball for being connected with the "fix". When Joe Stoshack learns of Shoeless Joe's innocence, he decides to go back in time and try to save the all-star. Will his plan work, and change the fate of Shoeless Joe, or will history remain as it is today? Read this great book to find out what happens.

For Winchester interests beyond firearms
If there is an interest in all manner of Winchester products, "Standard Catalog of Winchester" is an okay black and white price catalog of all sorts of items sold under the Winchester name. Even if you are not a Winchester collector, the contents are interesting to thumb through.

The firearms section is approximately 120 pages, which are virtually the same Winchester pages that appear in other Krause Publications such as "The Standard Catalog of Firearms" and "Fladerman's...", only expanded though the use of larger versions of the same pictures and illustrations. I only mention this duplication of content because, if you already have any of these other Krause publications, this book does not offer expanded or new information relating to firearms.

Standard Catalog of Winchester
An excelent book for any Winchester fan! I found stuff I had no idea Winchester had manufactured. Highly Recomended.

A Must Volume For Winchester Collectors !!

This book is a MUST
I am the Storyteller to our werewolf games, and my players and I consider this book a nessessity! Werewolf the apocalypse just does'nt have all the info you need. This book contains merits and flaws (a way to earn more freebie points and to spiff up your charater by making it blind, double-jointed, or have a wonderful tolerance to silver, and many more), personality archetypes so that your character may regain willpower more easily, as well as making it more fun to roleplay. An extra list of metis deformities is in this book as well as new abilities (like klaive dueling, pilot, and demolitions), gifts, backgrounds, and rites. This book also contains extended information on ALL of the tribes AND "camps", including the Ronin(if you don't have this book, you've probably never heard of it)! More information for the Storyteller on Packs, Septs, Caerns, Spirits, how to crossover different white wolf games, dueling, new combat maneuvers, aging and it's effects, and the werewolf sickness of Harano. For everyone it contains new totems, and fetishes. But best of all, this book contains all of the changing breeds (like werecats, and weresnakes) except for the werefoxes! This seriously saves you much money if your players insist on being a weredragon!

More info than Werewolf itself
If you bought Werewolf: the Apocolypse, liked it, and want to start playing the game like a REAL MAN, then you have to buy this book. It has information than the Werewolf core rulebook. And it introduces you to each of the awesome Changing Breeds. Get the damn book.

excellent gaming for "realistic" role players,
excelent art, and an even more impressive storyline to go with, white wolf publishing combines (successfuly at that) real world concerns, environmental and the like, with the fantastic mythos (old world and original) regarding the werewolves.

Things are not always 'Black and White'
I'd never heard of Dan Mahoney, but the title caught my attention and the back cover caught my interest. Being a retired police officer, I view with some skepticism any so-called authority on police procedures and policies. I was surprised when I found my attention riveted on the story. I truly couldn't put it down. I couldn't wait to learn the outcome and the fate that awaited the bad guys. The only thing that struck me as being less than authentic was the fact that every investigator from every police agency was not only intelligent, dedicated and persevering, but a really nice guy to boot. That just doesn't happen. I will definitely buy another Dan Mahoney novel

Very Good Detective Novel
This was my first read of Dan Mahoney's work. I must say I liked it alot. The character of Brian McKenna is a strong one. The story with the two killers is very interesting. The Police work is well decribed. The character Tommy McKenna is based on a real person. He, along with Greve, Bynum, and Big Ed make the investigation end a real good show. The outside agencies, FBI, Arizona Sheriffs, and Singapore police add flavor as well. The Political side show, with Barrone and McMahon, add a good sub-plot. The story, which had parallels to the movie, 8mm, kept me very interested. This book will have you feeling bad for the victims. I look forward to more books by Dan Mahoney.

Great Police Procedural
Normally Police Procedurals are not my cup of tea; however, Dan Mahoney's BLACK and WHITE kept me riveted. This was my first (but not last by now) Brian McKenna book by Mahoney, and while I like Brian a lot, my hero and person I'd like to see more of in future books, is the tenacious, intutitive, elderly retired black policeman. I guarantee, you've never met anyone like him. They made him and threw away the mold! As you can tell, I really get into my books - good ones come alive for me - and this is a good one!

There are other very unusual characters in this book that you will come to know and like (or dislike), and this is another book you will hate to put down.

I started this book in the morning, took it with me for my flu shot (stood in line reading) at the Church, and stayed up all night to finish.

I think you will like it!
