A must have!
This was the only resource that I used to prepare for my GROL exam, and that was all I needed. I studied for a week and a half and passed with flying colors. This book is also a great reference to keep in your technical library.

Outstanding Study Guide for the GROL!
GROL Plus purports to provide the information needed to study for and pass the examinations for the Marine Radio Operator Permit (MROP), the General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL), and the Radar Endorsement for the GROL. Based on my personal experience, it does an outstanding job of meeting this goal!

What is special about GROL Plus is that it not only includes all of the published questions and answers, it also explains why the correct answer is the right one and provides easy ways to remember which answer is correct.

I most strongly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to earn the MROP or GROL. In preparing for the GROL examination, I purchased several books, GROL Plus is the one that did the job and was the only one I needed.

1896 in Le Petit Paris, Turning the Century in Southwest Louisiana
Published in Paperback by Little Paris Publishing (30 July, 1999)
Author: Lawrence Fred Martin Capuder Sr.
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

Born in 1888
My grandfather was born in 1888 in the town of St. Martinville, LA and turned the century with the rest of Mr. Capuder's cast of characters. Even with that connection, in reading this book I still learned things about my ancestors that I didn't know. It is amazing how real these folks still are on the pages of Le Petit Paris, as if they'd just closed their storefront or doused their lantern for the night, not the century. I am the author of a book of Cajun poetry, Porch People, that tells the stories of these same people two generations later and it is with great respect and pleasure that I add Mr. Capuder's vast information to my own.

Exhilarating !
The book takes you back in time. The author makes you think the people are still here with us today. And he makes you feel like you're living in the past. The book is very informative, interesting, beautifully detailed with pictures, and sectioned. It's our own heritage and the way they lived. It has cross references which makes it even more interesting. But most of all it leaves you hunger for more.

Snapshot out of the past
This book is a small treasure of riches from the past for rural southwest Louisiana. The turn of two centuries finds us viewing our ancestors as if they still worked this land and shopped these store fronts. I learned things about my own great-grandfather that our family oral history had not documented. Mr. Capuder has done a wonderful job condensing such a vast history into such elemental beginnings.

Amazing Lodges ... amazing book
Wonderful content and photos ... I've lived and worked in Yellowstone for 20 years and had never seen the "once approved, never built" drawing of the Old Faithful Inn. have been to many of the "lodges" featured, and will use the book as inspiration to visit a few more! I've scooped up several for gift giving this holiday season.

The most appreciated book I have ever given
Give this one with a pair of airline tickets

Historians' Love "Great Lodges"
From Lee Whittlesey, Park HistorianYellowstone National Park, Wyoming: Old Faithful Inn is the first lodge featured in Great Lodges of the West. The Inn is as much a part of Yellowstone National Park as the geyser it is named after. The author covers its history and architecture and brings to life a much loved landmark. From Deirdre Shaw, CuratorGlacier National Park, Montana: Christine Barnes has pulled together some little known history about the historic lodges of Glacier National Park and the region, then spun a story history buffs and park visitors will truly enjoy. Historic photos from the park archives along with architectural drawings and color photography makes Great Lodges of the West both informative to read and beautiful to look at.From David Wark, Historic ArchitectCrater Lake Lodge rehabilitation project: Great Lodges of the West tells the important story of Oregon¹s Crater Lake Lodge. Christine Barnes informs the reader of a Lodge built on naive optimism, its deterioration, and the real threat of demolition. She then illustrates how the Lodge¹s rebirth is evidence of what citizens can accomplish when they value their architectural heritage

Fred J. Rynerson ¿ Gemstone Mining & Lapidary Pioneer
There are certain books that seem to bring words to life, inspiring visions of the way things were, and the way things ought to be. Exploring and Mining Gems and Gold in the West - documents the personal history of Frederick James Rynerson, and his experiences during the boom years of San Diego's colored gemstone trade in the early 20th Century (ca 1900-1914). This book includes important photographs of the mines and people who helped make San Diego a global epicenter for Tourmaline. One of my all-time favorites!

An excellent look back at tourmaline mining in San Diego
This book is the personal history of the adventures of Fred Rynerson, one of the early tourmaline miners of San Diego County. Although he did not have a lot of formal education, he was a very intelligent man who had a keen eye for geology and for people. This is one of my all-time favorite books--if you have any interest at all in pegmatites or what conditions were like in early twentieth century southern California, I highly recommend this book.

Great book for females of all ages!
I read "One of Fred's Girls" when in elementary school, and it is one of those books that will remain a favorite throughout your life. It tells the tale of a young girl who goes west in search of work, and works in one of Fred Harvey's legendary restaurants, and finds adventure and a husband along the way. It's a refreshing book, honest, and brings back an age of inncocence. If you are a fan of the musical "The Harvey Girls" with Judy Garland, you will love this book. If you haven't seen "The Harvey Girls" I recommend that as well! I have no idea why these books are out of print. If you local library is part of a wider library network, you may try that to obtain a copy.

Friermood's books are awesome!
I am an avid reader, and I especially love Elisabeth Friermood's work. She writes so vividly that I feel as if I am there. Sadly, however, her books are out of print. :( Even so, I whole-heartedly recommend you read her books, if you can find them!

A great first novel
Great first novel by author Fred W. Schott. The real story of adolescent life is not always pretty and the author relates an intriguing story, though fiction is not a stretch from what could be a real life situation. He tastefully weaves in to the novel the work of caring adults, a not-for-profit organization and the church working together to combat the negative influences of gangs and drugs on youth.
Once I got into the book I did not want to put it down for fear that I would miss something. A good read, you won't be disappointed.

Exciting New Author!
I've just read "When Sparrows Fall," a first novel by Omaha Fred Schott. It is one of the best first novels I've ever read, and I read a quite a few. As a Christian who tires of syrupy "Christian" plotlines and dialogue, I found his Christian perspective of real life, including violent street life, extremely refreshing. I especially enjoyed his views of a church with pastors who truly know what it is to "be the church."
It is also a delightful change to experience a representation of a terrific organization like Boys and Girls Club and the wonderful, valuable work they do for kids highlighted in quality fiction. This novel is fresh, exciting, and a real page-turner, especially towards the conclusion. When good and evil tangle, the outcome is almost never as obviously cut and dried as it so often seems in fiction. In "When Sparrows Fall," Schott does a truly commendable, real-life job of combining complex characters with difficult situations and making a believable case for Christian faith, good guys, and the opportunity to make a valuable difference in your own community.
"When Sparrows Fall" is a great read for Christians and non-Christians alike. I highly recommend it!

Alaska--captured within a lens
Whether you live in Alaska or travel across it by cruise ship or air or some other means--this beautiful book is for you. On each glossy page there lies something for every tourist and local. Rich photos of the common cruise ship sights, from the deep blue glaciers of the inside passage to little Skagway sitting on the hillside, all the the cruise ship ports are captured by Fred Hirschmann's lens. Aerial views of Anchorage, Juno, Mt. Denali--it's all here followed by interesting explantions of life in Alsaka. I originally saw this book in a little shop at the Port of Juno and immediately wanted it, but it was only for display--how happy I was to search and find it here on Amazon! I highly recommend this book--large, clear photos and excellent journalism will keep your memories of Alaska in perfect order and will bring your friends into the bountiful beauty of the land with which you fell in love.

Arizona
The book Arizona by Scott Thybony and Fred Hirschman is excellent in both its reading and photograhy. Both participants of this book have really captured the true essence of Arizona. My students were unfamiliar with all of the wonderful places and attractions our state had to offer them. Arizona history has in fact become a wonderful learning experience for my students, and this book has been a helpful tool in showing them how beautiful our state truly is.

Flying Photos in AK
This is a wonderful compilation of photographs centered around flying in bush Alaska. Anyone who has lived or travelled off the beaten path in the far north knows how essential airplanes are for travel and life in the 49th state. While the essays in the book tend to be a little sappy and trite, the beautiful photographs more than compensate as the reader is shown the beauty of Alaska from the perspective of bush planes.

The Decline and Fall of American Education and a Blueprint for Its Resurrection
Published in Paperback by Halcyon House (1991)
Authors: Carl Salser and Fred West
Amazon base price: $19.95

Education reform has been thwarted.
Normally, a civilization begins to fall apart in little bits and pieces. Then, as the process accelerates, in larger and larger chunks. But looking back, through the haze of history, historians tend to see onlyh the larger, dramatic chunks--and not the bits and pieces that actually started the decline and fall. The authors, two well-known longtime educators, explain why every significant reform or change in American education has been thwarted and frustrated--and by who; and why it takes more and more money and people... to teach less and less to fewer and fewer. They also explain why there will be no substantive change, no imporved achievement, no cost-effectiveness....until the "Seven Deadly Problems in Education" are either resolved or circumvented.
