I think this book is great. It illustates pioneering in a unique way. History buffs of all ages will enjoy it.

All three of these paper doll books are wonderful, they combine history and art to create an interactive experience for the child to treasure always. I highly suggest getting two copies, one to cut out and one to treasure forever :)

I think that this is a book that very accurately describes what the winter of 1949 was like. After reading the book I talked to various people that lived in rural Nebraska at that time and they said that what was discussed in the book was very much like what they lived through. I plan on using the book as part of my lessons on Nebraska History for my students.

Excellent,easy reading of real life stories of farmers, ranchers, pilots, US Army personel of a major snow storm that first hit in November 1948 and again in January of 1949. Affected people in the all or parts of 10 western states. A national effort to rescue people and lifestock. A human drama and of heavy losses of lifestock.

I have owned this book for years and use it often in my work as a historic garment researcher & seamstress. Copious primary source material in the form of store ads, photographs of original garments in the Museum's collection, and easy-to-understand, logical descriptions of the times and social conditions under which these clothes were worn. ...

The pictures are beautiful, the information is extensive, and it'll make you want to sew!

A very inspirational book and a must for anyone interested in the Grand Canyon. Betty's sense of humor captivated me throughout.

Ms. Leavengood delivers a captivating look at the lives of women who helped to shape the Grand Canyon - not geologically, but culturally. These early explorers helped to open up the Canyon for the millions who would follow, and the author does a great job in capturing the both the appeal of the Canyon and of the women who first made the trip. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the Grand Canyon or the human spirit.

This is what I want from a travel guide. As I'm considering a lengthy trip to Arizona, and to Phoenix specifically, I want to know the what's what on the what-to-see. "The Best of Phoenix and Tucson: The Ten Best" has that, with a hearty dash of personality.

Lots of travel guides take a similar tack: list the top ten of the usual categories. What makes this one different is that the writers have avoided becoming lackeys to the hotel of entertainment industry. Instead of being crammed with corporate logos, they focus on their opinion. I like that.

No one will be surprised to read most of the lists: dining, resorts, romantic vistas, but nice to see were lists like, "The Ten Best Other Ethnic Restaurants." Naturally, they have a number of general and Hispanic restaurant lists, but I was pleased to see the authors really did their homework. Now I know I can check out "Peter's European Cafe" and taste their Hungarian palacsintas (stuffed crepes).

Phoenix and Tucson are neighbors. Anyone visiting one community is likely to visit the other, but they are not twin cities. Therefore, the writers wisely create separate sections for each city. Anyone willing to make the 110 mile drive will be ready.

A tourist will love this book, but I suspect any local will discover things about his home city previously hidden deep in the phone book.

I fully recommend "The Best of Phoenix and Tucson: The Ten Best" by Don W. Martin, Betty Woo Martin.

Undoubtedly the most fun and most helpful travel book we have ever consulted. Have just returned from a wonderful week in this extraordinary city, made all the better by recommendations in "The Best of San Francisco." Instead of paying $200 at the conference hotel, we spent $79 at a small boutique hotel nearby everything, including the cable car, that was recommended in the "Proud Paupers" section. It could not have been nicer: impeccably clean, friendly staff, charming atmosphere, most comfortable hotel beds we have ever had, walking distance to shops, restaurants, galleries, everything you want is right in the neighborhood. We also used the "PP" section to select two wonderful ethnic restaurants - Thai and Indian. Both served delicious, savory meals, with large portions for small prices (under $6 in some cases). And provided interesting cultural experiences. In addition to pointing you in the right direction to enjoy San Francisco to the fullest, this book also tells you how to avoid major headaches, by recommending you do not, under any circumstances, drive a car in this city. We took that advice and were so glad we did! The best buy in town was also recommended, and that is a transportation pass at $15 for 7 days. You can ride any of the public transport, buses, trolleys, BART, and the famous cable cars. Before you take a trip to San Francisco, do yourself a favor and get a copy of this wonderful, down-to-earth little book. You will be glad you did!

The photographs and the recipes in this cookbook make me feel as if I'm back in the Caribbean. Easy and delicious, these recipes combine the diverse flavours and cultures of the islands, European, East Indian, African, Asian and Latin American. It's a beautiful book and easy to use.

After two trips to the Caribbean I have fallen in love with the food and the people and the ambience and now I can enjoy the wonderful flavors and colors of Caribbean desserts all year long. Even reading the names of these recipes is a sensory treat, Ginger Beer, Mango Wine, Caramelized Mango Cream, Tropical Sundae with Ginger Lime Sauce, Mango Daiquiri Sorbet, Soursop Ice Cream, Ginger Creme Brulee, Tropical Chocolate Mousse, Gulab Jamoon, Rasmalai, Rum and Raisin Cake, Browm Sugar Chocolate Cake. I've made over a baker's dozen of these recipes and they're great. Now, whenever I get a yen for the Caribbean I'll just pull out Caribbean Desserts.

I purchased this book because I can count sereral people I know that have had a loved one or friend that that has an drinking/substance abuse problem...and this book was to better help me understand what not only myself, but others can do when they are in this situation.

You can read this book in one sitting since it if very short, but informational. If you are looking somewhere to start, this is a perfect book! I had never even knew there were such support groups such as Al-Anon & Nar-Anon, which are support groups for the loved ones of substance abusers.

So if you want to help and do not know where to start, pick up this book!

During Family week at the BFC I sat in a lecture conducted by Dr. West. It was during this informal lecture that I came to the reality that I was an alcholic and was just as sick, if not more, than the family member I was there for. The main item in the "Book of Answers" that made me realize this, among other things, is listed on pages 20-21. I failed this test miserably.
I've been clean and sober for 6 years. BFC and Dr. West literally "SAVED MY LIFE". I only pray that many other lives as well as relationships can be saved by simply reading this "Book of Answers". Thank You Dr. West

This book is a compendium of multiple newspaper columns written over several years. In it Dr West shares practical knowledge, insights, and compassion that is rarely seen in medical texts. As a medical oncologist I have occasion to work with many people with varying stages of alcoholism. I have found this book very helpful for practical points of view that are not seen often in medical literature. I recommend this easy to read useful book by this authoritative source to all in the healthcare profession.

The text for the descriptions of the hikes is fantastic. The directions are generally good, although the directions to a lot of the Sabino Canyon hikes is a little lacking.

What really irritates me about this book is the trail profiles. For example, the Agua Caliente trail profile begins at an elevation of 5420'. It ends at 5420'. It goes up in the middle, but it is nearly impossible to tell how far -- there are no other elevation marks besides the first and last. This pattern is repeated on a number of different profiles, and is the only thing that prevents me from giving 5 stars.

Those familiar with reading topo maps may be able to decipher altitudes, but for the rest of us the profiles are useless on many hikes.

Now in a thoroughly updated second edition, Tucson Hiking Guide by experienced Tucson hiker Betty Leavengood offers thirty-four hikes grouped by mountain range, and ranked from easy to difficult. Most of these journies past superb scenic mountain vistas are only a short drive from downtown Tucson. Maps, photos, elevation/distance profiles, trail access information, historical notes, personal anecdotes, and much, much more fill this solid and thorough guide from cover to cover enabling anyone to see and experience the natural splendor of the Tucson area on foot.

Each trail has a profile, topo map, and other trail data including distance and difficulty. Descriptions are complete and very well done. There is a good balance of trails surrounding Tucson. Honestly though... research is outstanding! Trail history digs deep to find out how the trail names came about. Information on the Pontatoc Trail name set my mind at ease having grown up in Oklahoma. Several trails sparked my interest having seen little information previously in print. Highly recommended for all and a must have for Tucson residents - joe bartels Webmaster - HikeArizona.COM
