Childhood Memories
I had this book as a kid and have always remembered it. I read it over and over again. The stories are still vivid in my mind as are the ghost tips at the end, such as when a dog or cat is staring at something, and you can't see anything. It is probably a ghost and if you look between their ears, you'll see the ghost, too.
The book "disappeared" from my parent's home years ago. It would be fun to read it again after all of these years. Best ghost story book ever.

Scary, Funny, just plain Good!!
One of the only books at a library I would indeed read when checked out I had to find it again. I paid a pretty penny for it but well worth it. Had to share it with my daughter. I love ghost stories and so does she. The thing at the foot of the bed is hilarious if told right. The milk bottles is sad and a sweet and true story along with the hitchhiker. Read them and then read them again. It's hard to grow tired of such good writing.

The worst childrens book ever written....I am horrified....
My 3 and 4 year old sons selected this childrens book from our local library. It began about a boy who was lazy and his mother wanted him to get a job. Each day he came home and had done something wrong with his "wages" for the day. The mother called the boy names in the story like "stupid airhead" and it got worse each page. Of course we changed her words to something else to finish the book, but no child should hear any mother talking like that to her child even in written form.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!

Funny old folktale!
Loved this book and my children loved it too! The illustrations are cute, too!

Big wind adventure.
There is a different feel to "McBroom and the Big Wind," as compared to "McBroom Tells the Truth." While the artwork in "McBroom and the Big Wind" is cartoon style, the artwork in the other is more sophisticated and expressive, giving the story an added visually expressive dimension. The story itself is about how McBroom is able to save Willjillhesterchesterpeterpollytimtommarylarryandlittleclarinda from the big wind. As Fleischman's stories go, he hints at the real story, but builds up to the climax with all of the outrageous lead up encounters. Then he ends by saying, "That's the bottom truth. Everyone on the prairie knows Josh McBroom would rather break his leg than tell a fib (p.40)." The art is fair while the text is stronger. With the run-on names and narrated style, the book makes a good read-aloud title. Middle school readers make a good audience for this book and Fleischman has included words like "rambunctious" (p.14), "tacking" (p. 16) and "ornery" (p.22) to keep the vocabulary challenging.
