What a great book!
I love this book! It's a very well-written, warming story about the conflict between a child and her mentally retarded adopted sister. It explores the emotions that accompany an adoption not from the parents view, but from the siblings view, an angle that is not often examined. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in two days, I definitely would recommend this book to anyone.

Great Book about understanding different people
This is a great book to teach children how to accept different people. Marda, an elementary school child must learn to live with a retarded child that her parents adopt. It is a "heart-warming" tale of how she herself adapts to this new and strange situation. Highly Reccomended.

About a young boy's adventures with his pioneer family
Set on the American frontier during the 1830s, after the Black Hawk War, Sean's Quest by Leone Castell Anderson is a engaging and entertaining novel written especially for middle-grade students about a young boy's adventures with his pioneer family after the end of the Black Hawk War. Sean's Quest is recommended as being an astute and engaging read, capturing both the joys and hardships of life before the Civil War, as well as the conflicts within a close family. Also very highly recommended is the previous book in this outstanding series, Sean's War (0963881-949, ...).

"What happened to Sean?"
This was the question I was always asked after readers finished his story in the first book, Sean's War. As the author, I, too, wondered. Not wanting to let go of the characters I created, I asked myself the two "magic" words
I use: "What if...?" and knowing Sean from the years of writing his first story, I felt he would have to find his beloved stepmother and stepbrother Peder and bring them home. I think the readers who asked the question will find Sean's Quest an exciting answer .

a great book
This is a great book that incorporates two issues that children often have to deal with: adaption and racial issues. The book, told in the first person, focuses on two adapted children of two different cultural backgrounds. Highly reccommended--it will teach your children that not everybody in the world is the same.

Great book for children ages 8-14
This book will appeal to children of all ages. It uses the winning combination of animals and adventure to draw readers into the story. The author's delightful tale shows the value of true friendship in an imaginative vista. It would make a great book for classroom use. Some readers have compared it to A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle

An entertaining novel from a truly gifted storyteller.
In The Shadowed Unicorn, twelve-year-old Brendan, his irrepressible "older" twin, Nick, and their sister Ami, all struggle to cope with the sudden death of their father and the family's recent move from New York City to an old farmhouse in Pennsylvania. When Ami begins to fantasize about finding a unicorn, then discovers mysterious hoofprints in the woods, she tacks the beast to a farm owned by "the Ogre", a recluse the locals believe is responsible for the death of a child. Despite this danger, Ami insists her brothers follow her up the mountain on an adventure that puts them all in serious danger. A highly recommended and entertaining novel for school and community library collections, The Shadowed Unicorn establishes Sheila Welch as a gifted storyteller.

This book was great! I loved all the stories but Hearts and Hoofbeats was my favorite. I think Shelia Kelly Welch should write book another with a secquel for each story in A Horse for All Seasons. I would love to find out how Roseys foal, Penny, Magic, and all the horses and riders turned out.
