Thorough, up to date (2000) and well written
This book was recommended as a textbook for a 4th year course in real estate development and it reads like one. It is well organized and covers this broad subject with detailed, practical information in a systematic way.

Most of all I enjoyed the two real life case study storys (of the development of an office building and a high-rise apartment) that weave through the chapters. These were very candidly told by the developers themselves and give the real picture of the trials and tribulations of large project real estate development.

Numerous listings of information sources, web sites, and bibliographies at the end of each section makes this book a 'keeper' reference text.

Market, marketability and feasibility studies
This book so clearly articulates the pivotal role of the triad of market, marketability and feasibility studies in the field of real estate development. While the book does not attempt to be all encompassing, the text is dense with financial and other risk analysis distilled from the experience of the authors and contributors.

Although at times it felt like the shudder of taking an ice cold shower, I finished the book feeling refreshed and invigorated to tackle the challenges and opportunities of the risk-reward tradeoff in the development business.

The self-help guide to naturalistic acting.
I found this book particularly useful from an actor's point of view. It successfully directed me in my presentation of the piece, due to the in depth description and psycological analysis. It enabled me to give a truthful, fully-developed, and highly naturalistic portrayal of Anna. I would strongly recommend the book to anyone intending to put on the piece, and anyone researching the aspects of naturalistic drama.

Don't WAIT to get it!
A friend sent me a copy of THE WAITING GAME, knowing how much I value good customer service in restaurants. I found this book to be a thorough and comprehensive review of excellent service. It was both informative and educational, but not boring at all. I recommend it to all wait staff and management alike!

Good reference, poor "teacher"!
This book is an excellent "do-it-yourself" CGI reference, but it has a few minor flaws that prevent it from being the ultimate Perl book.

First, this book is not intended to teach Perl or CGI scripting. Any novice would encounter serious difficulty trying to piece together the code fragments that make up this book.

Second, an experienced Perl programmer may find that the "code fragment" approach to creating general functions often requires extraneous code and added complexity. Still, the incredible comprehensiveness of the book make it a useful reference for generating new ideas and new approaches.

If you already have a basic Perl book, this book would make a great addition, helping to problem-solve more complex dynamic web page requirements.

Good for Unix, dubious for Win 95
This book is clear, well-organized, and has many useful examples, but the authors did not check their examples on Windows 95 systems. For instance, and this is not a minor point, they say that you can run command lines under DOS in the same way you can under Unix. Not true! Even something as simple as perl -e 'print "hello";' will not work. Because of this, the book would be far more useful for those working on Unix systems than for those using Windows. I am not sure if there is a better book available, but "Perl 5 Unleashed" does have the correct information on command lines.

Excellent book with plenty of great examples.
This book covers the more popular and usefull areas of Perl. The book contains great examples of how to use/do various things within Perl. Also all examples are real-world based. This is my most used Perl book in my collection, by far

Countdown to death and mayhem
The city of San Francisco and, to a lesser extent, the nation were throttled in November 1978 when a former city supervisor named Dan White opened fire and killed Mayor George Moscone and city supervisor Harvey Milk. Author Mike Weiss' book is one of the few that ticks down the seconds to the double killing and, though no one knew it at the time, to a social uprising that left much of the city in ruin. That Harvey Milk was the city's first openly gay official sparked a fury in the city's dense homosexual population and ignited speculation that White's motive, in part, was his acknowledged anti-gay position. For many, that two men were gunned down for such a hallow reason was perhaps only a small part of the complete story, and Weiss' book mercifully does not blame White's crime solely on homophobia. Instead, we get a picture of a professionally and financially desperate man whose act may have been largely to avenge his not being reinstated to his job after he resigned. San Franciscans literally exploded, however, when what they perceived as an open-and-shut case of murder warranting a death sentence was deemed by a jury to be voluntary manslaughter, and the protests in the city's streets came to be known as the "White Night Riots" with property damages in the millions. For all practical purposes, the city's nightmare ended with White's suicide after his parole from prison after just six years. This nuts-and-bolts synopsis is greatly detailed by Weiss' vivid reconstruction of the personalities and politics that were on a collision course, and his work emerges as an informative commentary on a major event in the city's rich history. Additionally, while there have been some books written about both Moscone and Milk, few (if any) have been done about their killer. To some extent, Weiss manages to give us an in-depth character study of White and which few other writers have even attempted, much less achieved. In sum, this book has murder, sex, politics and family, their ultimate collision that eventually cost three lives is all the more tragic because it really happened.

Frequent errors make it difficult to use
I needed an intro to Perl, which also let me jump into examples. From the table-of-contents, this book seemed like it would be a good one. However, I found the first chapter so full of errors (especially in the code examples) that it was almost worthless for a Perl newbie like myself.

With Perl especially, it is difficult to know for certain whether a stray symbol in the code samples is a mistake or a subtle construct of Perl. This book's examples are cluttered with such odd mistakes, which really are generally mistakes.

Even worse, there is really inadequate discussion surrounding the code examples to tell exactly why they are presented. Sometimes new constructs actually are introduced in the examples, without explanation surrounding them (or even reference to the later sections where they will be fully explained... which would be fine too).

Very difficult for a beginner, and probably too simple for an expert.

Too proprietary
As you go through the book, more and more examples rely on the previously discussed code. That makes it unusable as a reference book.

My main complaint is that well over 1/3 of the book is devoted to HTML parsing and dynamic output, which is great. The problem is that the author wants you to use his HTML parsing engine for every 'How-to' recipe. So, if you don't want to use this particular parsing method, close to half of the book is useless. :(

Ok, but pales in comparision to "Perl Cookbook"
I bought this book before getting "Perl Cookbook" - and I can tell you there is no comparision. Get the O'Reilly books (including Perl Cookbook) before buying third party books. There is no substitute, unless you are looking for sheer unproofed bulk, which the "Definitive" Perl-5 Problem Solver excels at.
