Best Western I have read to date!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have just finished reading it. Looks like the transition to the next installment is excellent. If you haven't read this book yet, be sure to put it on your reading list very soon. The characters are very well developed and the story is very exciting.

This book is Great!
I didn't think I'd read a book to match Ralph Compton's, but this one grabbed me quick. Another outstanding author. A page-turner of a western, and a terrific character in Frank Morgan. This is writing at its best.

Wonderful New Series!
Mr. Johnstone has topped his Mountain Man and Blood Bond series. Frank Morgan is a fresh new character and not a "Smoke Jensen" or "Preacher" knockoff. Once again, we see Mr. Johnstone's ability to make history come alive. Can't wait for the next installment coming in August 2000. Mr. Johnstone, please write faster! Thank you for a wonderful read!

A wonderful read
I was in awe reading about the adventures of Smoke Jensen and Preacher The action was fast and brutal, a real page-turner. You can almost smell the gunsmoke! I'm glad I finally discovered Mr. Johnstone.

Smoke, The Man With The Blurring Speed Draw
The book The Last Mountain Man is about an 18 year old boy named Smoke, who swears to get revenge on the men who killed his father and brother. Smoke lives with a mountain man named Preacher, who teaches Smoke everything he needs to know about the west. I would recommend this book to any one who like westerns and/or action books.

The Beginning of an Outstanding Series
"The Last Mountain Man" is the beginning of the Smoke Jensen story. Smoke is a raw naive kid, who learns fast, and won't take any crap from any outlaw murdering thief. If you like the Western genre you'll LOVE William W. Johnstone's "Mountain Man" series. Smoke Jensen is genuine.

Just a Little Peace Please
Frank Morgan would rather put up hjis guns and live in peace, but outlaws have smashed his life, seriously injured his wife, and taken his son. Now he rides into a valley busy with a range war. Fortunately for Frank his reputation has prseeded him. The battle is on and Frank needs to make some quick hard decisions in order to confront all the danger.

Great Western Novel
I was so impressed with this series I e-mailed the author to let him know just that.

Frank Morgan, is at it again and won't back down from some pushy ranchers that think they're above the law. As well as some wantabe famous gunfighters looking for a reputation.

You won't be able to put it down once you get started. It keeps you on one heck of a ride and Mr. Johnstone did an excellent job as before putting together a outstanding western novel.

It's a must read!! For true western readers or those with interest good ole fashion manners.

The Continuation of a great series
I really enjoyed the fourth book in the Last Gunfighter Series. The action is fierce and the book is one that is hard to put down. The main character, Frank Morgan, continues to try and put his guns up and settle down. but Fate won't let him. Great reading!

Night Mask ---- A Good Read, A Good Scare, & A Good Moral
I have read almost all of Mr. Johnstone's published work. I enjoy most all of his books, but my favorites are still the ones from his horror genre. There are many that prefer his para military and his western genre. "Night Mask" would not disappoint any of the groups. It is well researched in that locations are recognizable in real-life and that characters act consistent with their chosen profession and created personalities....until they surprise you. The twists and turns in the plot are many, but don't retract from the "readability" of the book. Mr. Johnstone has a way of refining the story of good vs. evil so that it is re-invented again and again in his books and never turns mundane. He can be graphic without the turning it gross. "Night Mask" is an above average example of Mr. Johnstone's talent as an author and I highly recommend giving it a go.

A exciting story!!!
This book is the first Mystery story I have read by Johnstone, and I am not dissapointed. This book contains most of the things that peoples attention: rape, murder, phony leads, and a unexpected ending. I hope others read this book and to those who do I say good for you. But to those who think this book is beneath you I would have to say it's your loss. Fight the evil and enjoy the thrill of the chase.

A book all liberals should be forced to read!
This book was one that I had trouble putting down. Every page became more exciting than the last. I have read almost every book Mr. Johnstone has written and this one rates as good as "Out Of Ashes". All congressmen and judges should read the "Ashes" series. Keep up the GREAT work, maybe we can convert a few bleeding heart liberals

Don't stop the ride...I want to keep going!
Blood in the Ashes is terrific! Just when you get the idea that William Johnstone is going to bore us with the IPF and Hartline, he takes a wild twist. It has been talked about for decades by sociologists that should a disaster of this magnatude happen, cults of all types would rise up around the world. The Ninth Order is as despicable as Sam Hartline, only more of them. And the surprising discovery that Ben makes concerning Sister Voleta is enough to have your eyes popping out and re-reading it to see if what you thought you read was really that. This is also another great example of how each installment of the Ashes series is a book unto itself, but a part of the whole story. Sit down, strap yourself in, and get ready for a wild ride. Just don't expect the story to slow down long enough to get off..and who would want to?

It's covered in Blood and Politics!
The book is filled with sex and violence, at times reaching disgusting levels. However, it is also full of love, compassion, and hope despite all odds. The bad guys (and girls)are evil, so in return, the main character, Ben Raines must be equilly ruthless. Hopefully Blood in the Ashes will serve as a wake up call to all out-of-closet liberals that are demolishing the American dream of an independant, hard working, educated people.

Great writing.
This book is full of deciet, while it doesnt fool you, the reader, it fools the characters of the book pretty well. It's got a bit of everything in it: betrayel, double-crosses, prisons, sex, violence, no rock and roll but I am sure you people can live without it.

A New Hope For Raine's Rebels
Well he did it again. Another great book continueing Mr. Johnstones great series. This one rounds off as one of my favorites but Treason in the Ashes is my favorite. I wont give away the ending but its a great way to end a book. Just makes you want to get the next one.All round this book was great it has everything a good book needs; suspense, action, Drama, and romance. Keep up the writing Mr. Johstone and know your giving hope to this new generation.

You'll like this one
There can never be enough films or books about the dark drama of human conflict. In terms of tension, suspense, and relentless action, Standoff in the Ashes ranks right up there with the best of the genre, I put it on an equal level with classics like the Brotherhood of War books, Red Dawn, and The Triumph and the Glory.

Finally, Ben Raines opens the big can of missile "Whoop *SS
This is a great book in a long line of great books. Enough Said

Eight Days Of Glory
I am an Alamo fanatic, and I make no excuses fof it. Mr Johnstone's story of a young man raised by Indians who becomes one of the Alamo defenders is one of my favorites, and when I saw it offered on tape, there was no hesitation in ordering a copy. My only disapointmentment is in the editing(of course, that's what "abridged" means, isn't it?), and I would love to see a full length version on tape someday. Until then, this is an excellent adventure story that can be enjoyed by anyone not offended by the obvious violence associated with the legendary struggle for Texas independance. REMEMBER THE ALAMO!

ANOTHER BEGINING TO A GREAT SERIES
Jamie Ian MacCalister orphaned as a boy is captured by the Indians and along with him was a young girl. Together they plan an escape. Whenever they have a chance they bring into their tee pee dried foods and other necessities. They make their get away and, all of this time he and Kate the name of the girl, run into danger, which keeps the story exciting and fast. Jamie grows into a man. They find themselves a home in Texas. And of course Jamie becomes envolved in the battles of Texas. A top notch read and plenty of real events in history.

REMEMBER THE ALAMO!
JOHNSTONE'S TALE OF A YOUNG BOY RAISED BY INDIANS WHO BECOMES A LEGEND IN THE WEST AND A SURVIVOR OF THE ALAMO. A GREAT ADVENTURE TALE AND THE WAY THE BATTLE OF THE ALAMO SHOULD BE REMEMBERED, DESPITE WHAT A CAREFUL STUDY OF HISTORY TELLS US IS THE REAL TRUTH. WELL, FOLKS, I HAPPEN TO PREFER MR JOHNSTONE'S VERSION TO A LOT OF OTHERS CIRCULATING AROUND. HIS DAVY CROCKETT DIES WITH HIS BOOTS ON, FIGHTING THE ENEMY, AND JIM BOWIE TAKES MORE THAN A FEW WITH HIM, TOO. THESE MEN ARE HEROES, AND THEY DIE AS HEROES, AND EACH ONE DESERVES THE HONOR AS SUCH. I KNOW BOWIE WAS A SLAVE TRADER AND A CON MAN, AND DAVY CROCKETT PROBABLY DID SURRENDER, BUT THIS IS A STORY OF LEGENDS. READ YOUR HISTORT BOOKS FOR THE REAL STORY. READ THIS FOR THE PRIDE IN OUR ANCESTORS THAT WE SHOULD HAVE. AND READ IT FOR FUN.

This book holds power!
This book is amazing! I , being from a younger generation, found it intriuging and stimulating. Ben blew my mind - what courage he held! I give this book a HUGE A+ !!

A compelling continuation
Anarchy is the perfect next step in the Ashes series. As we learn of a threat from a former Soviet General, Ben Raines is attempting to muster his people and start anew. The dialogue and suspense of this novel clearly shows that William Johnstone has a hit of a series on his hands. We see in this installment how Ben just wants him and his people to be left alone to carve out a society that is as best for all as possible. But, with the horror that the IPF is bringing, along with the diabolical Sam Hartline, Ben and his people know that they are the nation's only hope. Sam Hartline is the quintessential villan, and every page makes you despise him more than you would think possible.

This book kicks some A$$!!
This book, if made into a movie, would be the number one action film of the decade! The massive ammount of force that is thrown at our hero Ben is unbelevable. This series is a must read! And just beleive all of this that happens in this series could actually happen. So. . . read, and see what the future might hold for you!

Helping Relatives
Smoke Gets a Letter from a cousin asking for help. Smoke nevers turns away people in need, and definetely not family. So Smoke packs up and heads for Montana. On the way he looks up some old tough mountain men friends. He knows the battle will be tough and he might even loose. But if he did how would we be able to read another book? Maybe he will win!!

Please get the story right!!
In a review that I read on the book The last mountian man(where Smoke Jensen first comes into play) he is known as Kirby Jensen.
Not untill later on in the book is he referd to as "smoke".Also Preacher didnt take Smoke under his wing after Smokes father had been killed.Preacher had taken Smoke to teach him about being a mountianer and and teach him how to hunt and fight, basicaly train him in living in the mountians.Befor that winter Smokes' father was killed and Smoke spent the winter with Preacher praticing on pulling those 45's in a blur. Also it never mentioned that Smoke was a big man even when he was just a boy.
The only thing that the person got right on his review was start from the beginning and read all the books it will make everything come into play when you get to where you are going.

BEST OF THE WEST
William W. Johnston writes the best, hardest to put down series I've ever read. His books are facinating. They talk about men that my dad talked about when he'd tell his growing up stories. He could have been an old mountain man. This particular book, JOURNEY OF A MOUNTAIN MAN was the first one of the series I read.It takes place in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Since I was born and raised in Montana and lived in all the rest of these states made the books even more readable. Then when I finished the book I went to the used bookstore I trade at and found many more of the series that had come before. I have not went wrong with any book Mr. Johnston has written. He has several series out such as THE BLOOD BOND SERIES, and THE EAGLES SERIES, and THE LAST GUNFIGHTER SERIES. They are all great reads. I just loved them all. They talk about the magnificent West and the totally magnificent men that populated it. The books display humor (in some),honor, courage, and chivilary. This is what being a man is all about as far as I'm concerned. My husband even read all the ones I found, too. He was a strictly a Louis LAMour reader. I was thrilled to have found something he could read and enjoy that was not a repeat. Myself included.

Very explosive!
Johnstone's Mountain Man novels are so fast-paced and exciting, you have to catch your breath. This is classic writing!

Revenge
SMOKE JENSEN LOST HIS FIRST WIFE AND CHILD TO a small group of worthless hired guns. It was quite some time ago but felt like only yesterday when he rode into a town named BURY, a town he believed the 3 bandits now resided. If it did the population was going to decrease just as soon as Smoke found the cowards.

Return of the Mountion man
I Enjoyed the return of the Mountion man The Preacher,Was one tought &very cool Man .that didn't take any Fool Hartedness
He would try walk away .But the Bad guys would not have any of that walking away,So they keep on pushing
