GREAT bargain! Very thorough!
This is a GREAT value. Very in depth and very thorough. This book covers it all, it even has the fingerspell alphabet and numbers in the back of the book. As far as a sign language dictionary this is the very best one I found, and I looked at several. Not small enough to carry around in your pocket but I don't think anything with this much information could be that small.

The best ASL dictionary
This dictionary was recommended to me by my sign instructor. The signs are clearly illustrated and the definitions are in great details in this dictionary. I think this dictionary is right for all levels of sign students.

Nice detail at a great value
This book has wonderful pictures for most of the words in the book. It also has nice instructions on how to form the words and letters. In the back it includes the alphabet and cardinal & ordinal numbers. It is also at a very good value!

A Wonderful Book -- A Wonderful Adventure
This is a wonderful book. There is an adventure with every page turn and the descriptions are deliciously vivid. I always look for books that will "take me away," and at the same time, teach me something new. The Road To El Cielo took me to Mexico's cloud forests and inspired in me a new appreciation for its wildlife, plant life, and way of life. Highly Recommended.

My Book of Choice on Web Graphics Theory
Timothy Webster provides a superior treatment of web graphics fundamentals, using clear and practical examples. Writing for both Windows and Mac, his Web Designer's Guide to Graphics first lays down a tight review of graphics file formats, monitors, color models, bit depth, resolution, palettes, anti-aliasing, compression and interlacing. Not stopping there, he gives pragmatic examples of when to use PNG, GIF and JPEG formats.

The book's one major weakness is that many of the color screen shots used do not hold up well when printed. The occasional ineffective 1:1 screen shot is used to point out details which would only be recognizable if printed at the same size as its screen display counterpart. This problem, present in many of the current web design books, could be easily resolved by zooming in on the screen to show the slight differences in detail.

That being said, out of all the many books that are available on web graphics, there are none that I've found which are more comprehensive and accurate than this one.

Valid analysis marred by turgid writing
This book lays down the history of secret societies and subversive movements and ideologies from ancient times to the modern day. She lays down the ideas and ideologies of some subversive groups from antiquity and shows similarities with later subversive groups in history. The research and analysis is decent enough, but her writing style and presentation can leave much to be desired.

This book was written in the 1920's, and periodically she makes references to some of her previous works, which she assumes the reader is familiar with. Also, the author LOVES to quote passages in Latin or French without a corresponding English translation. After awhile, this can become very annoying.

The conclusion she reaches is that there are organizations that spring up propagating ideologies that are nihilistic and created to destroy belief in the existing social order. Such organizations often get used by influential people to use as political weapons. This can be very true, but the influence of such bodies in modern times I think is exaggerated. Before the creation of mass communication and media, the control or use of groups like the Masons, which had influential people in its membership would lend itself to successful subversive activity. In modern times, such influence pales in comparison to what control of media or finance allows.

Excellent explanation of the Conspiracy Theory of History
SECRET SOCIETIES by historian Nesta Webster is an excellent book if the topics of conspiracy theories, mind control, occult doctrines being imposed throughout the world and the notorious Jewish question happen to interest the reader. Webster remains very scholarly and does not jump to conclusions too hastily without examining the evidence first. She occupies an unusal position. She is Christian, but is opposed to the "neoconservatives" of her day as lacking the spirit to get her nation, Britain, back on track. Today she would probably occupy the position of Pat Buchannan. She also does not condemn Eastern religions and Islam the way most fundamentalist Christians today do. She recognizes the validity of their religious spokesment through time, but still believes that Jesus is God speaking most clearly to man.

The history of secret societies is traced from ancient Egypt, Persia, to the life of Christ, and on down to the point after the Russian Revoloution. The list of groups is endless: Gnostics, Manicheans, Assassins, Knights Templar, Rosicrucians, Freemasons, Illuminati, Grand Orient Freemasonry to the Marx inspired socialists, anarchists, and communists. The Illuminati and the pseudo-Muslim Assassins are considered the best models of how secret societies operate. Some secret groups however, have not tried to combat revealed truth or well-ordered society, such as the Essenes, Jesuits and the British Masons (the Grand Orient ones from Europe are the bad ones).

As to the massive force behind the societies, Webster first takes and anti-German stance and investigates if the Germans are responsible, since the societies have damaged France and Britain and helped spread German nationalism. Although the Germans have used Freemasons, Illuminati, international bankers and Jews in order to further their national agenda, Webster points out the Jewish element as overriding the German one. Underlying many of these forces is the influence of the Jewish Cabalists. Webster documents the inordinate amount of influence that Jews have had over secret societies and of their doctrines in the Cabala and Jewish belief in their status of the "chosen people." She wrestles with the question of wether or not the Jews have been consciously involved in a millenia-old-conspiracy to destroy Christianity and its followers and whether or not the PROTOCOLS OF ZION is a forgery. She leans toward accepting the PROTOCOLS as legitemate and in this regard. Zionism was emerging as a potent political movement at the time this book was written and it is commented upon.

If you are trying to figure out how the world and the groups that work to change the world (for the worse, usually) then I can't reccomend this book enough. It is objective and even-keeled the whole way through. Learn why socialist policy is a sham.

Definitive
If your are interested in getting started on the road to conspiracy then there is no finer book. This is the definitive reference book on pre-1920s conspiracy theory. Is there a vast conspiracy by the elite to defraud and enslave all the peoples of the world primarily through the international banking cartel. Webster, who clearly knows her stuff, says yes. Fact is a lot stranger than fiction and here she unmasks the true conspirators.

A good resource
This book has many words, but is far from complete (does not include religious signs, most sexual signs, and most uncommon words/signs). The signs also semi-frequently differed to what I've seen and learned. However, the signs are fairly easy to follow (illustration accompanied by directions). If a sign has another meaning that is noted. If a word has several signs for different meanings, they are all also listed. This book also has a few pages dedicated to how to use the language (like classifier and NMM's), but it is mainly just a dictionary. This book was used as the principle dictionary for my ASL 1 class (at the University of South Florida. Overall, I think this book is worth buying, but, there are better (more complete) ASL dictionaries out there (like American Sign Language [UNABRIDGED]).

Wonderful Resource for Educational Interpreters
As an educational interpreter, it is hard to find resources that are as complete as this one is. This ASL dictionary is a concise description of most uses for the same sign even if that sign can be used in a different context. That is important once you start teaching your student the differeces in multiple meaing words and signs.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting a complete and easy to use dictionary for Sign Language. Beginners as well as professionals can use this dictionary with the greatest of ease.

Excellent ASL Resource
Random House Webster's American Sign Language Dictionary by Elaine Costello and Lois Lenderman is an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning and using American Sign Language (ASL). Not only do I use it, but recommend it to students at the local college where I serve as an ASL lab instructor. The step-by-step descriptions and memory aids (hints) help the reader understand the nature of the sign and better remember how it is made. The book is published in two sizes, the print type being the only difference. I highly recommend the larger print, but the smaller book is lighter weight and more convenient when transporting between home and school.

I highly recommend this to anyone interested in ASL.

Flash and it's backend capabilities
If you are a newbie,......their are other alternatives that will get your feet wet, but if you are a practicing Flash developer and have a firm understanding of ActionScript...this book will inspire you to build real dynamic Flash apps. It touches on Flash Javascript methods, Flash and textfiles and goes into server side middleware solutions like, CGI,Perl and PHP. It also introduces you to database integration. This book gives you real world solutions, which maybe a bit elementary, but overall it lays the foundation for you. I found this book to be inspiring and to be the book which pushed me to learn CGI,PERL,PHP and MySQL. If your looking to build real dynamic/interactive Flash applications or websites this is the book.

Strengths in Design? This is the book for you
I am a graphic/web designer by design. Programming of any type is a struggle for me. Just as I started getting Flash 4 ActionScripting down pat they went and changed the syntax on me. Ive been through the whole collection of "Friends Of Ed" books yet none have been as clear and easy to understand as Dynamic Content Studio. This book covers all the important topics in a way that makes it easy for the logically challenged, such as myself, to understand. The examples are, for the most part, simple but offer a lot in the way of showing you what can be done and how to do it.

I have been using ASP to create dynamic Flash content for about a year now, and have struggled the whole way. This book makes everything a little clearer and offers you logical solutions for common procedures to help streamline your code, making life a little easier.

Great book, I highly recommend it!

Finally, a Flash book with substance!
An excellent book! Well worth the investment! It transitions well from more basic concepts to more complex topics -- With lots of substance for people at all levels of experience. Even those with more expertise can learn a thing or two from the different conceptual approaches presented. The book is not just about "here's how to do the same old boring X, Y & Z, just in the updated version of Flash", it also says "here's some different ways of thinking about solutions that takes greater advantage of new features of Flash". I also really enjoyed the mini math and geometry lessons... it's good to know that years of high school algebra and geometry could be put to some use!

The interface design chapters were particularly outstanding; judging by how awful so many Flash sites are at integrating interactivity, PLEASE!! I BEG YOU!!! everybody read the chapters on designing interfaces! They are a "must read" for anyone who wants to improve their site's interactivity.

The game design chapters are also incredibly helpful as well, and I think are some of the first useful explanations of game design I've ever seen for Flash. Even if you're not designing games in Flash, using a familiar game like Asteroids as a vehicle for explaining some pretty clever design elements works very well. Not to mention, it's very cool to be able to make your own video games! Flash isn't just for dull corporate websites anymore!

I'll be incorporating the lessons learned from those chapters into all the stuff I do... even though I only get to do very boring stuff for a corporate site. And if I use what this book teaches, maybe someday I can get hired to make games and do cool interfaces!!! :)
