A Difficult Read, But Well Worth It
This book will certainly challenge the non-scientist. It is not an ideal introduction to evolutionary thought. However, this book is filled with interesting insights that make it worth the effort. While their core metaphor, the contention that evolutionary science has appropriated developments in the physical sciences, does not always work, their analysis of historical developments in science and the philosophy of science is inevitably thought provoking and worth the effort to grasp. If you are looking for a straight-forward explanation of developments in Darwinian evolutionary theory, I am sure that there are better places to start than this book. If you are looking for a thoughtful examination of how and why those developments happened the way that they did, this book will serve you quite well.
admirable
An excellent and articulate summary/commentary of the history of natural selection. Complexity theory is covered with taste and intelligence, and not with the silliness that dominates many popular science books. Highly recommended.
Intelligent, beautfully written, learned and accessible.
This overlooked book is by far the best book in science I have read in a very long time and is as important as Kuhn. I urge readers interested in the major ideas of science - from Plato to nonlinear dynamics - to buy this book. It is beautifully written, elegant in its thought, embracing of the reader, and enormously suggestive.

Description
With more than three hundred photographs, Herbert List: The Monograph documents for the first time all phases of List's creativity: the Fotografia Metafisica (as List's early work, with its affinity with the work of de Chirico and Magritte, has come to be known); his photographs of Classical Greek ruins and postwar Munich; his sensitive homoerotic photographs; the artist portraits spanning the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s; and his subtle and touching human-interest photo-essays. Authoritative texts by noted critics and scholars provide historical contexts and influences and detail the development of List's oeuvre. A selection of List's own writings, a comprehensive chronology, a bibliography, and records of exhibitions, collections, and published photographs and essays complete the book. The photographs and essays collected in this volume comprise the definitive presentation of this modern master.
Classic without classicism
Herbert List is one of the most impressive photographers of the 20th century. This book is a masterpiece and offers a wonderful overview of List's work. It gives the opportunity to discover a classical and refreshing approach of the world-which escapes however from classicism.
Classical without classicism
Herbert List belongs to the most impressive photographers of the 20th century, showing a simple but wonderful vision of the world while escaping from classicism... A wonderful publication for "amateurs" and a masterpiece in arts book!

Worth the wait
I can remember when the book was first published over ten years ago, and I had a chance to go the the exhibit in Los Angeles. I balked at going and I regretted that chance. Now, eleven years later as a treat to myself, I bought the book without hesitation. "Bear Pond" has to be one of the most sought after if not the most referenced collection of male nudes. Bruce Weber is the master of photographing young men in the most natural and unaffected ways. Here, he manages to capture the innocence and provocativity of each of his subjects without seeming exploitative or lecherous. Although the book cost me much more than its original $50, I am so happy that I finally had a chance to add it to my collection of treasures.

Dolce & Gabbana's 'Animal' Purrs like a kitten
D&G, as most people in the fashion world refer to the Italian design team of Dolce & Gabbana, show here the diversity within their work 'Animal', purring like a kitten in your lap.
D&G chose two of the best fashion photographers known today, Steven Meisel and Bruce Weber. With their unique talents, the two photographers showcase the designers latest fashions, including the Haute Couture that makes D&G irresistable to so many.
If cutting edge fashion and equally matched photography is something you would enjoy, then 'Animal' is in need of a serious attention. Can you say, "meow, kitty kitty" in Italiano? Dolce & Gabbana sure can.

A note from Maureen Farquhar
Fantastic photography in another large book from Versace. This book captures the 'rock chic' glamourama which the late Versace excelled at creating. The association between 'Rock and Roll', and art is full indulged here creating a empirical illusion to the Versace dynasty. The glossy presentation of the images also adds to an overall feeling of luxury. The only reason I have not given this book the top rating is for its inclusion of Elton John - who makes me sick. So what if its expensive, luxuries like this don't come cheap. ciao,
Maureen Farquhar (maureenfarquhar@yahoo.com)
Gianni Versace, a Fashion Genuis
Gianni Versace was a designer who loved to push the envelope. His clothes were a mixture of extremes: sexy, sleazy, colorful, tacky, and elegant. One adjective you'd never find in a sentence with the word Versace is "boring." His clothes commanded--and often got--attention, which is why he was such a favorite among celebrities such as Madonna, Elton John, Liz Hurley, Courtney Love, Prince, Jon Bon Jovi and even Princess Diana. This book is a fabulous, eye-opening collection of vivid photographs of models and rock stars in Versace: from Prince to the members of British boy band Take That. Some outfits are more releaving than others, but they're all unmistakably Versace. Diana herself is also included in the book, along with a few words of praise for the designer. Tragically, Versace was murdered in the summer of 1997, but his spirit and influence live on. This book comes highly recommended. Drop it on your coffeetable, and your guests won't want to put it down.
excellent!
A must have book for all Versace fans.

Great pics of Newfs; can do without naked men.
I own a Newfy and can appreciate how dificult it is to photograph black dogs. So many of these pics make one smile; but the naked men are laughable. What is it I don't get here? Hardcover, family-oriented, coffee-table-type book, with these naked guys running around. How artsy?! Text is sadly lacking. For example, the section on training rescue newfs is visually exciting and has great potential, but it begs so many more questions.
My dog is on the Cover!
I would like to take this opportunity to share that Gentle Giants by Bruce Weber is very "special" because it is our beautiful grey Newf, Kady as the cover dog for Bruce Weber's "Gentle Giant". This is definitely a collector's book for anyone passionate about dogs and particularly, Newfies. Kady and our Landseer, Jon-Luc (pictured on plates 100, 102 & 103, spent 3-days with Bruce at an estate in Marblehead,MA. We were ecstatic! We will never forget the excitement and glowing pride, watching Bruce photograph role after delightful role of our dogs with passion and compassion. Bruce has formally acknowledged the misprint in Gentle Giants. He has sent signed pictures with an apology. The newfs pictured on the cover and plates 100, 102, 103 are Rossland's Kady in the Mist & Seaward's Sebastian Sir James (Jon-Luc). Kady continued her career on the cover of Rhoda Lerman's book, In the Company of Newfs. Jon-Luc went on to appear in Ralph Lauren's Polo Expedition, American Express and Timberland Ads! Thanks to Bruce, we have a lifelong, cherished memory. Kady has sinced crossed Rainbow Bridge. Jon-Luc is 9 years old and resting comfortably on his dognapper. Bruce, you made a special difference in our loves. We will always appreciate your warmth, compassion and love of dogs, especially the Newf! Fondly, Maureen & Gary Ross and the Pack!
They are also photographed in the book on pages/plates
It is the best book with Newfoundland dogs pictures
I found this book by chance. As I own a Newfoundland, I bought it, but I never could imagine how lovely it was. If you have a Newfoundland, you would like to have this book, you could read one and another time the text, and you will enjoy with the pictures. I wish that my Newfy was on this book.

The Chop Suey Club
This was the first Bruce Weber book i bought & i was very pleased. In The Chop Suey Club, Weber chronicles the growth of young wrestler Peter Johnson for 3+ years as a late teenager. Bruce has a great eye for spotting beautiful men and his 3 year photologue, The Chop Suey Club, demonstrates this well. Weber captures Peter's beauty in everything from a speedo to exotic dress clothes and various states of dress & undress in between. Weber uses a wide range of poses and ideas in these photos with his usual emphasis on the erotic. Several poems, still-life shots, & photos of nature are also included in The Chop Suey Club, but the emphasis is on young Peter Johnson. The book is in a smaller format than most Weber books, but it is thicker & has more photos than most of his other books. Weber also uses color photos much more so than in his other books. The Chop Suey Club is the kind of photography book you page through slowly when you first get it & you then later refer back to again and again. I like this Weber book the best & i recommend it to those who appreciate male beauty & fine photography, especially when viewed through Bruce Weber's lens.
Best Bruce Weber Book in Years
This is an astonishingly beautiful collection of images by a very gifted photographer who presents his subject with great sensitivity and warmth, as well as with a fair amount of humor and love. The artist reveals more about himself than his subject, allowing the viewer to feel and to be touched by his intensely personal obsession with this beautiful young man. The only complaints I have about the book are, first, its relatively small size, which isn't a problem except when larger photographs are spread across two pages, which I feel compromises the impact of the image, and second, the pages are not numbered, making it difficult to connect a given photograph with its description. Otherwise, it is a beautifully-made book, with both black and white and color images rendered in magnificent quality.
The Chop Suey Club
Finally Bruce Weber has assembled a collection which is heartfelt, sincere and passionate. If you skip a few vulgar nudes, most of these portraits are outstanding and lively. They key of this success relies on the intimacy and passion that every photo reveals. Each photo is a tassel in a perfect yet articulate mosaic that goes from fashion to portrait, into documentary. Both a document and an act of love that spans across five years. Not only the work is honest but it's technically far superior to any of his previous collections. By far his best collection and a must for every fashion photography lover. Well done!
