CUTE!!!!!!!!!
I read this book because my friend recommened it. Dobermans are my favorite breed of dogs, so enjoyed reading it.

It's about a Dobie (Doberman Pinscher) named Max who wanders away from his owners while on vacation in the Sierras. He was chasing a squirrel when he fell from a cliff. His owners call and search for him, but give up. They finally end up believing that he is dead, and return home.

Meanwhile, Max is trying to survive. Will he survive? Or wil he finally die of hunger and dehydration? You have to read to find out. This book is a real tearjerker and made me cry in several parts.

I recommend it to anyone, especially for those who have a dog.

A Great Story
This is a great book. My dog is a doberman and she's named Max so when I found this book I quickly bought it. My dog is dying of cancer and it's a good insparation.

Max survives injuries in the wild to return home.
I read this book as a child and have never forgotten the terrible odds Max overcame after being lost and injured in the wild while on holiday with his family. His triumphs inspires persistance while teaching about loyalty. I think it was based on a true story, but it's been a few years since I read this amazing book.

A vivid introduction to WWII in the USSR
This book was an off-hand purchase at a garage sale. I thought of it as a children's book, but it was much more. Although the author spares us some of the gorey details of the Seige of Leningrad, since I have gone on to read other books on the subject, her judiciously chosen details reveal vivdly just how dreary, how ugly, how savage a time it was.
As an American, my sense of the events of World War II was limited to a handful of American books, Anne Frank's diary, and the newsreels of the London Blitz and D-Day. This opened up an entirely new world and perspective and shocked me with my own ignorance. Such a grand city dying off by starvation and random bombardment, surviving strictly on will and small human initiatives -- the Road of life across Lake Ladoga, the battered and starving women of Leningrad turning out to physically clear the frozen over roads, the author having to slowly burn her furniture and beloved books to keep warm through that awful winter.
Though no great work of art, it is easily read in a sitting and will reward the interested with a strong and well-told recounting by a triumphant survivor.

A personal history that will leave you wanting more
Young people (and all too often adults) often get bored with history because the events seem to have little to do with real people. "Shurik" is an autobiography that takes the world events that one is supposed to learn in school and humanizes them so that the reader wants to learn more...I would recommend it not only for children but also for adults who want to learn more about the Soviet Union in World War II.

The story is told by Kyra Petrovskaya Wayne, a woman who fought on the Leningrad front. She tells of her experiences at the front and in the city of Leningrad while Nazi Germany held it under siege. Shurik is boy who lost his father at the front and who Kyra Petrovskaya first met as he was digging through the rubble of a bombed apartment in a desperate attempt to find his mother. The author takes him in and tells the story of the two of them living in Leningrad...Be prepared to discuss this book with your children when they have finished it. Like any realistic story of war, there are parts of it that are disturbing, but well worth the read.
