World War 2 in the eyes of Yoko.
A touching heart warming story about a young girl Yoko and her family running away from Korea and trying to get back to their homeland- Japan. This takes in world war 2 and with her brother and father off at war and only her sister and mother to depend upon they face many challenges on the sad, long, bumpy, road ahead. A heart warming story, one with danger around every corner and will leave you at the edge of your seat.

Another touching book I have to recommend to all readers
'So far from the bamboo grove' is a must-read before this sequel. Both books are sad, touching and many emotions held within. My eyes became misty at the end of 'My brother, my sister and I'. I was touched, moved, the instant the book ended, recounting all that had happened to the Kawashimas. I encourage everyone to read this wonderful biography.

moving sequal
I recently reread this book in preparation for teaching my class of seventh graders. One must read Far From the Bamboo Grove before reading this one. It is heartwrenching to see the twists and turns in the life of the Kawashimas. But as brother Hideyo says," ... the Kawashima children can become a few drops of water in the ocean and make ripples that will spread humanity." My students are in awe of this family's struggle to survive. They are more appreciative of their lives and their parents. Yoko Kawashima Watkins is our hero. This is a book that will not be forgotten.

Wonderful and moving book!
This was a great book, even though I am 12, I understood it. Just as good as So Far From The Bamboo Grove. I read the whole book in just one day! It makes you cry, laugh, and hope. Touching, and gives you any view of the homeless and World War II Suggested to people who can deal with tough stiuations.

Very Moving
This book, So Far from the Bamboo Grove, was a very touching and inspiring story. It really showed you a different perspective of life. Being a student at a good private school, I think that my life is much like what Yoko's life was before she fled Nanam. I can not imagine what it would be like to have my life torn away from me and suddenly be digging through garbage cans to survive. It also showed you a very different view towards World War II. Being an American, I have always believed that the Americans should win all wars, and the wartime stories I have read all have characters who want America and their allies to win. This story, about a Japanese girl, told of the struggles of being on the losing side of the war, something I had not read about before.

This emotional story tells the true story of Yoko Kawashima, an eleven-year-old Japanese girl living in Korea during the end of World War II. As danger creeps ever closer to her hometown of Nanam, she and her mother and honorable sister Ko must flee their home in the bamboo grove, without Yoko's father or honorable brother Hideyo. The story is a first-hand account of what it was like to escape the horrible war. The things that she had to survive through are so terrible, I thought there was death lurking around every corner. This story is true, and Yoko survives to this very day, making the story all the more inspirational. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to experience World War II from a young girl's eyes.

I loved the book, so far from the bamboo grove, it completely enriched and enlightened me about what was happening in 1945, and i hate history books, the text books you can't get into, it just facts... i don't learn that way but reading this book made me want to learn more about history and world war II, Yoko Kawashima had put her heart and soul into this book and it was amazing to feel so much for such a wonderful book. I was so sad half the time and then i was so proud as well, thinking of Yoko as myself or my little sister. It was a terrific read and i hope everyone enjoys it as much as i did. thank you.

Very touching and moving book
This book is a rare type of work which you do not find often. Usually a book is about a Korean family who tries to escape from the North, but this is a Japanese family who had to go through the same type of hardship to escape the escalating power of the Korean Communists. Watkins did an incredible job of portraying the situation of that time through the eyes of a young person.

Riviting
I met Yoko on a trip from the UK to the USA we talked and talked the 10 hour trip was more like 1 hour, she later sent me her book, I could not put it down. I was so pleased to have met this wonderful person.

Tales from the Bamboo Grove
This was a great book. Yoko talked about times when she was a young girl. When they would eat dinner they would be able to share stories about their day. This book is a collection of some of the stories that her brother, sister and herself would share.

The struggle's in life
This book was excellent. It's a great book about a young girl having to grow into womanhood very young. The story will grab your attention and it won't let it go until it's all over. If you don't read this book, you'll be missing out on a great story that could possibly teach you a lesson about yourself and the people around you.
