Steelhead Water
Bob Arnold provides a beautiful tour of his home waters of the last 30 years. Tales of the N. Fork of the Stilly, the Grande Ronde, Sauk and most importantly Deer Creek abound. Adding to this collection of fishing tales and indiriect adivce is the tragic tale of the destruction of a true gem of a resource, the native summer-run steelhead of Deer Creek. His account of the mismanagement of logging practices in the Deer Creek drainage, and his role in the ongoing recovery, is a stern warning about the fraility of our most valuable resources. Excellent read.

Landscape Plants for Western Regions: An Illustrated Guide to Plants for Water Conservation
Published in Hardcover by Land Design Pub (1994)

Excellent tool for Southern California
I'm a nursery professional, and I use this book extensively in planning areas and helping clients. I consider it a "must-have" for our area. The book is organized in very useful sections: plant groupings, water conservation, design checklists, & a good plant encyclopedia for the So. California region. Color photos make it more attractive than the more popular 'Sunset' book, & I prefer it because of its focus on appropriate plant use.

Great reference book
Essential for landscape architects, great reference book due to Perry's knowledge in plants.

the holy bible of Southern California gardens
Two years ago I had a hillside full of fire hazardous weeds and no knowledge of gardening. After a four day ordeal of clearing the brush I decided to plant the hillside and knew next to nothing about what would grow there, how to plant the shrubs, how much to water and what pests might attack. I only knew I wanted to use California natives but I didn't know any names and the only latin I remembered was from my Catholic boyhood. After a one hour session with a garden consultant and visits to the Theodore Payne foundation I discovered Bob Perry's books and a whole world opened up to me. Mr. Perry is a legend in gardening circles and this beautiful book is the fount of much wisdom. Everything I have learned about gardening in these two years I learned from Bob Perry and my plants. I have scoured the immense gardening book collection at Central libary (the largest west of the Mississippi) and find this book to be the cream of the crop. Not only are the color pictures terribly important in making choices, the advice is impeccable and the variety offered is exhaustive. Thanks to Mr. Perry and his superb books I now have a garden of some seventy natives, all doing well and giving me great joy. Some day I would like to meet the man and shake his hand but for now I can only recommend his books highly.

Read this early on the weekend so you can cook later!!
Alice writes in the voice of her daughter about her daughter's favorite recipes and adventures at the restaurant. Wonderful reading and DELICIOUS recipes. At first looks a little like a children's book, but great for adults!

A book for all ages...a jewel in my collection.
This book is written as Fanny telling about her life with her mom, the fantastic chef Alice Waters(she wrote the book). MyDaughters & I share in our love of this book, to read it...enjoying the pictures which are wonderful to the eye. then the bits on cooking and the pleasure of food & preparing it along with flavor is shared in such a great way. Allow yourself to sit down and get lost in the spirit of this book.

getting away from it all
Dorothy Molter was an independent woman who managed to live her dream in one of the most beautiful and serene wilderness areas in the world. In her cabin on a lake in the boundary waters canoe area, she lived alone and in harmony with nature. Thirsty canoe travelers would stop by to visit Dorothy and she offered them root beer, which she bottled herself. This is an inspiring, true story of independent living; highly recommended to anyone who has ever dreamed of living in the woods.

An enjoyable story about a woman in the North woods
Root Beer Lady is the story of Dorothy Moulter, a woman who moved from depression era Chicago to the Northwoods of Minnesota. If you've ever visited, or read about, Ely Minnesota, doubtless you've heard a little about her.
Although the story is interesting for the most part it does drag a bit in some areas. I found it pretty fascinating though. Kinda makes you want to pack everything up, and move to the middle of no-where.

Outstanding story
I have been going to the BWCAW for the past three years. Reading this story just brings back all of the memories that I have been collecting over the last 3 years. Reading this book you can take yourself back to the wilderness area by moose lake, ensign lake and farther north to knife lake. It's a beautiful area that all should visit.

Carolina White Water: A Paddler's Guide to the Western Carolinas

Authors: Bob Benner and David Benner

Used price: $8.33

A Word of Warning
This is indeed THE guide to paddling in the western Carolinas, but it contains one extremely important error: the put-in listed for the Upper Green (class III) is actually the put-in for the Narrows (class V).

The true put-in for the Upper Green is just below the Tuxedo power plant; the take-out is what Benner mistakenly describes as the put-in.

This is THE book
on North Carolina white water. There are a number of regional white water guide books, and while they can be more helpful in some ways, they are not nearly so comprehensive. Benner has got it all. If it's in NC or SC and it's whitewater, then it's in there. The Caveat: Bob Benner is the old school author of most of the book. His son, David, is from the more elite hair-head generation. This means that the rivers rated by David are on a different scale from those rated by Bob. The good news: careful reading will reveal the difference between Bob's description's and David's.

Trees and shrubs for dry California landscapes : plants for water conservation : an introduction to more than 360 California native and introduced plants which survive with limited water

Nice pictorial reference
This book's strength is its pictures - realistic representations of dry California landscape plants. I would use it as a "brainstorm" book for getting ideas on which species to use in a particular landscape. The notations for each species are also helpful. Definitely one for the library.
